Hi Barry, so happy to have discovered your channel. I’m in Northern Ireland and am always over the moon to find someone close to home, with similar climate 👌🏻 I currently have a few Garden Pearl tomatoes waiting patiently to get outside 💚🍀

Sungold I tried last year and they were THE sweetest, tastiest cherry I've tried so far. They were brilliant. Black cherry was quite nice too.

We prefer beefsteak tomatoes 🍅 as I love them grilled but I also grow cherry or snacking varieties. I always go overboard but luckily I have people I can give plants away to. Have a super week Barry, Ali 🇨🇦

I have grown San Marzano 2, Oxheart, and Marmande. The Marzano variety got brown rot last year but no other tomato grown in the same bed had it so I guess the plant/seed was bad. Repeat growing Oxheart which is a beautiful tomato with a sweeter taste. Marmande is my favorite beefsteak tomato. Easy plant, firm fruit, and very good taste.

Thanks for this ... I wondered where the update was for the last year's hanging basket when looking through your vids ... I am new to growing tomatoes and only growing on a balcony, but I am going to give it a good go and so far those and the lettuces are coming up nicely so far on the window sill

Black Krim was my best variety this year. Very good taste and it produced fruits till the frost in November (in the greenhouse).

Great video. In my area there's an AG extension of the university and they have information on what cultivars do good in my region. If you get bored you can also follow your grow zone literally around the world and see what those folks are growing as well.

I tried those last year but the rats had them before they got to any good size! Treat them like a beef tomato and once they’re flowering feed them every week with a tomato fertiliser. Once the tomatoes start to get bigger you might need to feed them more often, keep an eye on the leaves for signs of yellowing, curling and spots as signs of nutrient deficiencies. A fertiliser with calcium and magnesium will help with flower and fruit growth.

Next job is to build a raised bed greenhouse/poly tunnel, ready in time for the tomatoes moving outside. They’re not doing well inside at all. They’ve been the same Tiny size for weeks now and are purple. On a dining table in front of a south facing window. Covered at night. I’m hoping they pick up. I have Roma and money maker.

Mine have all been a bit rubbish this year too, I think the low overnight temperatures have really set them back. They picked up as soon as they were planted though so hopefully yours will too!

@@GrowIt thanks. I’m hoping so. Failing that I’ll throw in some more seeds. They might be a bit behind but they’ll still fruit

Never grow moneymaker, there are so many better flavoured available. Shirley is a good, standard, salad type tomato that I rate well above moneymaker. Agree with your other suggestions as a good starting point.

@GrowIt I have 2 Shirley plants that are growing well, but I only have a balcony to grow on. I have a gro-zone compact grow-house. Would the grow-house be warm enough to grow them in, or should I grow them indoors (I have a very good windowsill that I have successfully grown a pepper plant on last year, which is still producing peppers). I live in Wales so the weather can be unpredictable. Or would they be fine in pots on my balcony? Last year was my first year at growing anything and I have been bitten by the gardening bug! I will be trying hanging basket tomatoes as well this year, as well as beefsteak and yellow cherry tomatoes.

Hi Tracy! They’ll grow best in your balcony greenhouse which will keep the temperatures and humidity at a better level than in the open. It looks like overnight temperatures are starting to pick up now so you could start hardening them off by gradually acclimatising them to being on the balcony. If you get any night temperatures below 6 degrees bring them in, but once they’re too big to be doing that we should be into late May/June and past the cold. Good luck with them!
