Sting gave me a lift for over 150 miles. Hitchhiking from London, heading home to liverpool. Evening, light fading, getting cooler. A friendly bloke stopped and off we went. It took me a while to realise. "A musician" he said when I asked. I looked properly and saw, the biggest star in the world! My God what a shock!. That was in, I think, 1980. I was a ragged 18 year old. Not yet established in any way. Given a chance to speak to a hugely successful man. What a gentleman. What dignity and insightfulness. A sense of fun too. Sting, I remember much of what we spoke of and have referred to your words many times. Important. Many thanks mate.

One of the best there ever was. My wife was a huge Sting fan when we got married but I was not as privvy to his music. That all changed 17 years ago when we got married, and we were at a resort partying with people way too wealthy for our pay grade, we just got lucky that we joined their group. They told us they had a surprise for us at the reception. They brought in Sting and his wife who congratulated us on our wedding and it was the most surreal moment. My instant love for Sting came early one morning (single mom-driving to work 6am) when I turned on the car radio. It was the middle of Do the Russians Love Their Children Too. I was going through a rough patch with my son. I was in tears and could not get out of the car to walk into work. The station had already named the song and artist, whom I did not know at the time. I obsessed all day about it. Asking everyone at work if they knew the song or artist. When I got home, I asked my son. He knew was able to enlighten me and share his love of the Police. It made such a difference in my understanding of how much I cared about us. I was hooked and wore out sooo many cassettes of this man's work. Having Sting be so open to/with you must have felt so incredible, but I am not surprised because of how much respect you show to everyone, with your knowledge of their music as well as some of their personal life stories. You give people a 'safe space' to be even more open. You remind me a lot of the late great interviewer Brian Linehan, who I watched as a teen. Always so prepared, so welcoming and warm, but never (from what I remember) tried to get in a kill shot, like some other interviewers try to do. You succeeded in connecting with Sting in a way that I’ve never seen an interviewer do. In other interviews, he usually relies on his pre-built “narratives” (surreal industrial landscape, I love you but you love someone else, shadow of the shipyard, etc,) . Your depth of knowledge of his lyrics, catalog, and the origins of those songs brought out some revealing moments I’ve never seen anyone “extract” from him. Plus your calm demeanor throughout is impressive. Bravo.

The 'Grief Trilogy' of Sting, as I would like to call it, was Sting's crown achievement as one of the greatest solo artists who could pull off what seemed to be a three-parter discography about the stages of grief from the loss of his parents. Where "...Nothing but the Sun" and "The Soul Cages" were about the loss of his parents and lamenting the coping process of it all, it was "Ten Summoner's Tales" where Sting's arc as a solo artist felt completed; redefined and fulfilled by means of accepting loss as part of the never-ending circle of life. Sting was now a bonafide artist afterwards. Very rare that you see a music artist allow its audience to grow throughout their musical journey like this with such spirituality and grace. Up until with the just recent 25th Anniversary of Brand New Day (1999), Sting's production values on his albums are some of the finest musically engineered pieces in music history savoring every note, composition, and key structure all artists should learn in producing such masterpieces. My favorite Sting Album...fluctuates each passing year. 😅 But the gothic and brute of "The Soul Cages" often takes the cake due to its subject matter, especially after losing my father which next year would be over 10 years now just four days before my birthday. Yes, being that Soul Cages released in 1991, it came right during a time where music dealt with dark and moody subject matters with artists began shifting into adult contemporary (i.e. Phil Collins & Elton John) and the arrival of Grunge music. To the Professor of Rock: this truly is another outstanding achievement of your Channel since you gladly covered The Soul Cages that I think Rick Beato missed out on and that I highly anticipated a much more intimate conversation about. Your Channel Friggin' ROCKS! 🤘

Rarely have I seen Sting so open and vulnerable. This was not a run-of-the-mill interview but a heart-warming talk about mourning and music and the incredibly moving and poetic lyrics on "The Soul Cages". Giacomo was named after a son of Sting and one of Moss’ top broodmares was Set Them Free, after a popular song by The Police". The same Jerry Moss who started A&M records with Herb Alpert.

Congratulations on the best interview i have ever seen with Sting. So touching, human, warm and insightful. He is one of my music heroes. I love All this Time but I did find Soul Cages a difficult listen when it first came out. I am going to return to it after decades of not listening to it. You were blessed to meet your hero who was on fine form. When I met him in 1984 when I was 18 years old on the Dream of the Blue Turtles Tour in Belfast he was not on good form. The hard pressures of touring no doubt and not prepared for young fans seeking autographs. I will treasure this interview as it captures the man I hear in his beautiful and emotional songs. Great questions and wonderful answers. Thanks for the podcast.

I barely comment on your videos, Professor. But as a former journalist myself, all I can say is: what a brilliant conversation. One can really feel how Sting started to enjoy this one after a few minutes already, how how opened up emotionally. He really liked talking to you. So did all we watching it. Thanks for this!

I arranged to have "Shape of My Heart" playing on my car stereo when I picked up my wife on the afternoon of our 1st date, August 16, 1998. Later in the evening, having fallen hard for each other, we danced to "Fields of Gold." We married a year later and celebrated our 25th anniversary this summer. Thank you, Sting.

Great interview ! Spent my senior year in a small town surrounded by cornfields..no internet then, just a skinny cable pumping MTV into the living room. The Police music offered a glimmer beyond the plains, walking on the Moon beneath an invisible Sun

Sting is one of our national treasures here in the UK! I vividly remember the first time I heard "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You." I was playing Monopoly with my brother and a friend; The friend had brought Ten Summoner's Tales on cassette and we were listening to it, and when that song came on I said, "oh, I love this one!" My friend said, I thought you'd never heard this album before, and I said I hadn't, "but this is an old one..." I knew the tune, I knew some of the lyrics, but I'd never heard it before. It was as if the song had always existed for me, like "Hey Bulldog" or "I Am The Walrus." I get shivers down my spine every time I tell that story - it was a weird experience that I've never been able to explain. Maybe, in that moment, I had a brief psychic link with Sting or something! I don't believe in that kind of stuff, but it's as good an explanation as any. Perhaps that song was just so profound to me that it resonated in some kind of way that defies explanation. (For the record, I had definitely not heard the song on the radio. The only channel I ever listened to was Capital Gold, which played primarily 1960s music at the time, and I rarely listened to even that! My main source of music was my parents' record collection, which was extensive.) xx

My dad was a political prisoner during the 1976 to 1982 Argentinian military coup. He was tortured and thank God he still alive but he lost many friends and family because the military people killed or dissappeared anyone who was a thread to the dictatorship. Sting and The Police music was in my playlist on the late 80s and music kept me sane from all the emotional trauma my whole family experienced. His "They Dance Alone" song touched all the mothers and wives who lost their sons and daughters to such a violent and senseless years of savage killing. My mother used to listening the Spanish version of it and the beautiful song Fragile. Meant so much to of all us. When sting went to Argentina with the Amnesty international tour , 1988 was such an amazing thing. We didn't have money to pay for tickets at the time but we watched live on the tv. THANK YOU STING.

Sting is Shakespeare of modern music- he is on a different level. I lost my dad at young age- he was killed back in the old country of Afghanistan. My father was Afghanistan 1st Captain and Chief Pilot. The Afghan Airlines had a partnership with PanAm. MY dad represented the Afghans with pride, dignity, and principle. He represented the Golden era of Afghanistan in aviation and progress. Sting’s “Soul Cages” resonates with me - I used to cry listening to that album and thinking of my dad. “Fields of Gold” was another masterpiece that made me think of my dad and his legacy. He left us at the age of 39. Captain Inam Gran was a true champion for Afghans and aviation. My father was killed in 1977- after his assassination, Afghanistan was hit with a tsunami of violence and despair for decades to come. Afghanistan was never the same…
