I always use new needles when I start new projects & I check my needles if I've been doing a lot of sewing to make sure my projects look as perfect as possible. Can you use poly batting low loft with a thin cotton batting

Layered on top of each other? As long as their shrink rates are similar, it shouldn't be an issue.
