My sis got me an electronic Brother for my b-day ten or so years ago. From Wal-Mart no less. 😊 It was maybe 150 bucks or so. I love it but was thinking it was lesser than my friends who had Bernina's, Baby Locks & Janomes. I'm not tech savvy & it's a multi stitch computer machine & I've decided it has waaay more stitches than I care for. I went to my local Stitch and Vacc shop & that man said the most profound thing to me that banged my brain...most people only need a mechanical machine that uses straight & zigzag stitches. That's my goal! To find an old clunker that's mechanical with no frills. He has those but wants way too much $$$ for them.😏 The search is on.

My brother lives in Grand Junction and I so wish I had learned about Bernina Jeff when I was out there last summer. We travel there often with our travel trailers I have a Bernina 830 Record that I have loved and used my whole adult life and just recently bought a Bernina Artista 185 second hand that I would love to have in for a "check-up". I'll check that May retreat for sure!

How did I miss this video. It was fantastic. I'm so excited to learn more from Bernina Jeff. I have only owned two machine's in my life, both a Bernina. First one bought in 1979 and it still runs well. Just now starting to get squeaky. My last was purchased about 7 years ago and I love it so much even though it's not the top of the line. B550. I'm going to get my husband to view his videos to help me keep things running more smoothly. Thank for this.

My mother owned the Bernina Sewing Center in the late 70’s/early 80’s in Grand Junction, when Mesa County lost the oil shale Industry and became the most depressed county in the nation. Broke her heart to give up the most liquid business she had. I still sew on her 930 and am a fan of Karen Brown. I felt real nostalgic watching this video. Thank you Jeff for your business!

If it weren't for the bust I would have gotten a new machine in '85. As you know it was a challenge for some of us to find full time work and no one was really getting ahead. Your mother was a delightful person. Even though I couldn't afford a machine, I went there for thread, needles, etc. My best friend bought a Bernina from your mother and still uses it. Jeff has done right by the Bernina name. Your mother would be happy about that.

Great video. I love what Bernini Jeff said about the type of machine you buy. I have quite a few friends that have multiple machines with all the bells and whistles. When I got into quilting about 8 years ago, I couldn’t afford those expensive machines from the dealers and bought a Brother on Amazon. It stitches the 1/4 in seam just perfectly and is a work horse. I have it serviced once a year. I did purchase a long arm machine about 4 years ago instead of wasting money on a fancy domestic machine. I am very happy with my set up. Like you and Jeff said, there is no need to keep up with the jones’.

I discovered him when I was locked down, no access to a dealer and my 740 was not cooperating at all, then I got the dread 1010 error message. That's so fabulous that Jeff is giving us all his knowledge about sewing and machines through KZbin. So much of this information is a lost art for our younger people who were not educated by the Mom or a family member as they grew up. Or even in school at Home Ec. Very few kids are being educated on basic stuff like this and way too much education is centered around technology or accessing it for the career they decide to go into. Thanks for the interview with Jeff.

Dear Karen, I'm a sewist all the way from Pakistan, I bought a Bernina 770qe from Dubai several years ago. After a couple of years I had a problem of the bobbin case getting stuck in the hook, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't detach it from the hook, obviously it meant no sewing till the matter got resolved. I had to send the hook with the bobbin case stuck with it to my dealer in Dubai (Mala is the dealer and the sole agent for Bernina there and a darling indeed) and she helped me replace the hook but I had to buy the bobbin case. Well just a couple of months ago the same fiasco happened again and guess who came to rescue? Bernina Jeff !! He has a video on how to dislodge the bobbin case from the hook. It took seconds to fix the problem. You cannot imagine my relief because Dubai was not an option in times of covid and I did not want to spend incredible amounts of money in transporting the pieces to and fro. I even wrote to thank Bernina Jeff in the comments of that video. Said all that, thank you for this interview. I absolutely love watching your videos. They are precise, well thought out and fantastically executed. Many many thanks for your wonderful input in my life. Your son is in my prayers always. One more thing, please make a video on how to make videos for KZbin of your own. I'm 52 years old, thinking of starting a quality, patchwork channel in my own language, but do not know the first thing about video production. I admire the way you use the computer images to explain piecing combinations and layouts etc. Fantastic work.

I also own a newer Bernina, B330, a Singer 99k from 1917 and a Singer Featherweight that is my most recent acquisition. I sew garments and quilts and think this all got started from my grandfather who was a garment cutter after WW II who taught me to cut fabric for doll clothes. Loved this episode!

Karen, I know this is off topic for today, but I just wanted you to know how thrilled I am feeling today. You have talked about UFO's a lot and a couple weeks ago, I just realized that the project i was avoiding was causing me a lot of stress. 15 years ago, I promised to make my husband a Civil War Reproduction quilt and talked him in to paying $300+ for the fabric. I got a good start and stopped. There it sits in plain sight making faces at me while I tried to ignore it. Then the light bulb came on and I realized I was looking at "Karen's UFO" she has been telling me about. I got it out and started working on it. As the days progressed, I realized that some of what I wanted to do with that quilt was beyond my skill level at that time, I just didn't realize, what my problem was. I am so grateful to you Karen for all you do to help us get over ourselves. Your good advice has helped me so much. I no longer feel like a twit. My project is just not done yet, but I am working on it and can see the end. Thank you so much.

I bought the first Bernina sold at a local quilt shop in my area. My Benina did not get the first check-up and cheaning free (as I was told it would get when I first bought the machine). I had to pay for it and all other services. Now I have trouble catching anyone in that Quilt shop to service my Bernina. Needless to say, I don't get that machine out and use it very much anymore. I'll be making a long trip out of town again (while school is out) to have my Bernina serviced (to be able to put some fancy stitches on my quilt tops). I use my Singer 301 the most. I also have a Singer 221, 228K and three other machines. Thank you for this video and the information about Bernina Jeff. Please stay safe.

And I just dropped off 9 machines and I live just over two hours away. See you in a month Jeff! I do a whole humans-as-parts lesson on how the machine is threaded, how it does the sewing, and how the thread goes through the tension. We use a 4 lb yarn ball as the upper thread and a 3 in yarn ball as the bobbin. It is very effective in helping students see how it all works. I tell my students to not touch tension in class but too explain that tension can be adjusted on projects sometimes.

Jeff took it to the back and came back out with it a few minutes later and said "you mask makers need to remember to oil your machines"...It runs like new again. I have taken classes at Hi Fashion and been to a few trunk shows. Now saving for a new Bernina!! Grand Junction suffered from an oil bust in the early 80's and this was like a ghost town. Now we are over 100,000 and Jeff is still here. That itself tells you the quality of his character and work! I love your you tube channel Karen! I never miss and re-watch several (color theory). I absolutely despise the needle threader on my 590. Itks been checked by my dealer. If Jeff has a suggestion on how to make it work, I'd love it. Great interview!

This was the BEST interview. Thank you so much for providing the video for all of us to learn from. I have a Janome, but no dealer, watching Bernina Jeff provides so much valuable information. He is amazing as are you.

I love my Janome!!! It’s way overdue for maintenance. I must take care of it.

@@redhen689 I am pretty good about cleaning mine, but I do need to find a dealer close to home that I can take it to when it's time. She is only 4 months old so I am good for the moment. You are right though, I absolutely LOVE my machine. Which one do you have ?
