Zhongli is the "ignore 80% of the boss fight" button. You just stay in the same place and shoot/hit with no need to avoid hits. Raiden's boss fight with and without him is REALLY different.

I’ve never regret pulling for Nahida. She is literally the best at dendro application. I run her with Keqing and Fischl, they dealt so much damage and it all thank to the dendro application. Having Nahida is literally the best decisions I’ve ever made

i pair nahida with kuki and alhaitham. she shreds with the deepwood set and my boi haitham straight shits on bosses. the vibe bosses take less than 30 seconds. scaramouche dead in one burst window dueing his downtime. its such a good combo imo.

The thing with Nilou is that you don't actually need 5 star units to make her work like the luxury Geo team Itto has. She is way more f2p friendly because she can use Barbara, Collei, and Traveller which you get for free and they are all easy to build. And just like that, you got yourself a team for Floor 12 Abyss easy 9 stars. :)

Zhongli may not be able to help you finish content faster. But having him allows you to build characters faster because of the immortality you obtain by having him on the game. Moreover, having Zhongli lowers stress level and less burn out while playing.

And while I use Zhongli for everything, him being a limited star is what kept him off the list. A character like Layla can do similar things even though her shield isn't as strong as his.

The 20% omni shred has a niche when you're running 3 different elements (non anemo) for dps, it will absolutely speed up chamber clears with that and less combat interruption.

zhongli is nice but it has gotten to a point for me where i just cant be bothered switching to him to get a shield. Fortunately im trying to max friendship for yoimiya so that's a good excuse for me to at least use the characters that i've built

I started playing a bit later so Kazuha was the first 5-star I pulled on the banner and I had no idea who he was. He's been carrying my team ever since, so when I first saw him in a quest I was like "That's HIM! That's my BOY!" I also got Xinqiu before I saw him in a quest, so when I spotted him standing around that also resulted in a gasp and a "There he is!" XD

I only got better at playing the game when I stopped using Zhongli. He is great to help you tackle tough content when you first hit AR 45+ but as soon as you have built characters I would ditch him from your team and learn to dodge to avoid taking damage. This allows you to have more powerful teams without wasting a slot for comfort. He can be built to do a ton of damage and can still be fun but learn to not rely on his shields as soon as you can.

tbh as someone who struggled a lot with dodging, zhongli was the character that changed the game for me. i could do events faster, clear abyss faster, pretty much do everything faster and easier because i wasn't constantly dying.

I know this is basic but I really suggest Noelle. She can defeat her own ascension boss and can defeat 90% of the enemies in the whole game solo. She is a shielder, she can heal herself and is defense/HP (honestly I forgot) scaling so she basically takes negative damage. Stack HP and DEF on Noelle and you have an unstoppable force.

I totally agree! I luv Noelle. She's like the big sister in my party! She tags along as I lvl up my other characters. If she sees them in trouble, she jumps in and wipes the opposition out easily! yup i jsut invested in my noelle and she makes ubeatable bosses verry beatable if you dont have zhongli shes also really easy to level up, she just tanks all the damage, shes also usefull to have for breaking shields, i dont use her for damage though, i just tank the damage and switch to ayaka combo to anhialte any opoent, becuase even if you dont have kokmi on the build she does rediculous damage.

I always get discouraged when watching “characters you ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE” videos because it’s all based on wishing and luck, which I don’t have. But watching this video, I feel so much better. I may not have all of the characters you mentioned, but I do have some! And you mentioned characters that could be bought with star glitter, which makes me feel like I have a higher chance at having great teams! I would advise to change your attitude towards getting characters. It's not defined by some mysterious "luck", it's all very down to earth, you just need to evaluate your needs in the game and decide which character will help you the most. And then just save till their rerun. We get around 60 pulls every patch completely F2P (just dailies and events), so you'll easily save up enough for your chosen ones by skipping 3-4 banners inbetween them. You're in control. Just don't let your focus dwindle.

It barely has anything to do with luck but how you manage your pulls. If you save up till you can get very important characters like Nahida, Yelan, Kazuha etc. and you have your 160-170 pulls when they have their rerun, you are guaranteed to get them due to the pity system. If you throw your pulls at whatever banner as soon as you have a handful of wishes, it really is just your fault. I will never understand the "Buhu I don`t have enough primos and couldn`t pull that character" because even as a non whale, I always just save enough and make smart decisions and investments.

There's no such thing as a 'must pull'. The game is manageable with decent understanding of Elemental Gauge Theory, energy management, rotation crafting, and proper application of buffs and debuffs.

For me it's Zhongli and Kazuha. They both changed my gaming experience for realll. Zhongli's shield is no doubt the strongest shield in the game and it really helps when you're not good at dodging like me (I play on mobile and find it sometimes hard to dodge). Kazuha and his EM boosted my team so much and he even helped a lot with exploration. Both of them are so good and they hardly leave my team ever since I got them

I got Xingqiu as my first 4 star (except Kaeya, Amber and Lisa ofc) and I'm still using him in my main team at AR55, with Yoimiya as an on-field DPS, Bennett as a buffer (+ pyro resonance), and Zhongli as a shielder cause I suck at dodging and Yoimiya is very sensitive to interruption. This team has carried me for the longest time :')

Zhongli’s shield also reduces enemy resistance by 20% to all elements and physical damage, so if your team doesn’t have room for both a VV anemo character and a shielder, Zhongli can be a great pick.

I also really want Venti or Scara just cause they can levitate from what I gathered. But if it's not meant to be then I'd at least like Kaveh. Yelan def gets Simps to pay... i am glad i been using the Welken Night since 1 week after launch and buying Intertwined fates... used a total of 345 to get Hu Tao, Yelan and Hu Tao Spear and Yelan Bow (Got the bow first roll, got the staff at roll set 11 on 10 pulls).... but all my genesis crystals are gone now as is my 12k Primogems stockpile...

For me personally, Bennet, XL and XQ are all "late-game" characters, which I didn't really need at first. And, since they are all available at Paimon's shop, you can simply save some star glitter and buy them, when the time come and you start to feel like you need them. Which is exactly what I did. The bottom line is: never spend your primos to get these 4-stars. Getting a target 4-star is already very risky, but these are double-questionable, because you can get them guaranteed for 34 star glitter. For anyone who want to exchange the star glitter for wishes - guys, are you serious? 34 star glitter, how many wishes is that, 7? You can't even get a 4-star for that. Not to mention this could be a random crap like The Bell. Keep calm and save your star glitter!

You know how you mentioned never spending primos to get 4-stars? Same boat. But I take that a step further. Don't spend glitter on 4-stars either. 7 wishes closer to a 5 star plus a possible 4 star is worth more to me than a guaranteed 4 star.

I don't actually use zhongli in most teams but in certain teams he feels like a must-have. It feels way more comfortable just casually pogo'ing with xiao or releasing consecutive charge shots with tighnari when I have zhongli on the team compared to using other shielders; especially for homa xiao.

At the first stage of the game Bennett before was a waste to have but later on players realized that he provides a good significant attack boost and heal. I think it was abyss 7 that players started to do nuke damage using childe, sucrose, mona, and benny boi. And for xingqu he was discovered when he was paired with diluc because they were so good at doing vape damage. Until now xingqu is paired with all pyro characters because he provides a good hydro application.

Fantastic list! Been playing since release and seriously these are the characters that will hard carry you in the game. All the characters in this list have been pretty much my go-to characters in game, with Kazuha being my absolute fav. Fell in love with his design when he was released, and have never had so much fun exploring and shredding with him the moment I got my hands on him. Him and Nahida are my only triple-crowned characters. Tbh, no wonder I've skipped so many banners cause I'm already content with these characters, and why I can afford to get some of their constellations and signature/bis weapons lol My absolute fav characters to play and are essentially on permanent rotations are(in no particular order): Yelan/Kokomi/Nahida/Alhaitham/Raiden(C2)/Kazuha(C2)/Zhongli(C2) Bonus: Xiangling, Ayaka, Venti, Ayato, Bennett, Xingqiu depending on the situation and/or if I feel like changing things up Kills everything so fast and so convenient on pretty much everything, battle and adventure/exploration. My goal is to get C1 Yelan cause I absolutely love her skill and getting two in a row is fantastic lol Then also get Focalors too cause Archon collection lol I'm also looking into building Kuki for future usage. Im pretty hyped with Fontaine though so im eager to see who are going to be added to the new list of "metas" lol

This is great general advice for people who are completely lost on the who/how and why of characters and team-building with characters. However, you can clear almost any challenge/monster/domain with practically anyone as long as you build them properly for a specific role and that role being fulfilled well with OTHER well-built characters in a team that has good synergy. You could get all these recommended characters and STILL be falling off the mark if you don’t build them properly and place them in good teams.

This is solid advice. My one suggestion, if you did another edit/update, would be to expand Xinqiu's section kind of like you did for Anemo. I think at this point most people are going to want two off-field hydro units as so many teams require them. It's basically a "Pick two of Xinqiu, Yelan and Kokomi." situation right now.

@@davidlyons6235 sacrificial sword is one of his best in slot weapons. it resets his elemental skill after it is applied once which is good since he has a 20 sec skill cool down (VERY long compared to other charas who have 8-12 sec cool downs). it’s a 4 star weapon so you won’t have too many issues finding it. you could also go for favonius sword (another 4 star weapon) to build energy recharge on him. he basically becomes a burst bot and trivializes all of the overworld content with some decently leveled talents. my recommendation would be to get a favonius weapon on at least one of your party members to keep his and your other charas bursts up (since it gives great elemental recharge to your team) and sacrificial sword in him specifically. feel free to ask more questions if you have them ^_^

as a f2p player that started an account over for the 3.X updates, my team currently is Dendro Traveler with prototype rancour, xiang-li with staff of homa, xinqiu with flute, and beidou with the prototype claymore from the blacksmith. keep in mind i've only reached around ar30. its really nice having this set up and i have fischl, but don't want to set her up for a while. I can't wait to see how newer characters play into the game. And especially can't wait 'till i see what's in the archon quests ahead.

Noelle needed to be on this list. She needs no constellations, can be healer/dps/support/shield, doesn't need other characters, you can craft a best in slot weapon for her, and I'm still using her in a lot of my teams to fill out roles making her very futureproof. I have a friend who just joined Genshin a month or so ago, and I told him to build up Noelle because she would literally carry him through the game. Last night he was talking about how scary Noelle can be.

Actually, having a Noelle is like having another team XD. You make a 3 char team and add Noelle, as you said, she don't need more, she will be a shield for the team, but also like a secondary team XD.

I started Genshin a month ago and already have Xiangling, Nahida, and Fischl from this list. Looking forward to getting myself a Xingqiu, Sucrose and Bennet as soon as possible. This was super helpful, thanks soooo much. i'm AR 35 and currently working on ascending my world lvl to 4 ( but lvling up my charas and doing some world quests first; only my traveler is lvl 65 and everyone else i have is lvl 40-50). 29:05 i do that! i often use nahida, barbara, kuki/keqing and anemo traveler as my team, hahaha. you may wanna consider adding a note to the nahida section that dendro MC and collei are both *free*, and cover the role as well (albeit less effectively) there's also layla for the comfort tier, as she cans serve as a budget zhongli, as well as an off-field cryo application support (such as for freeze/superconduct), kuki shinobu is also in a 'comfy' position as she handles electro application (generally for dendro reactions), energy, and healing

Yeah honestly we just need more dendro off field characters. Nahida does lots of damage, buffs the team and generates a lot of dendro particles. Dendro MC is an alternative but struggles to keep up. I also love Layla :)

I love this! I super agree with this. I was thinking the same about Zhongli and Kokomi and you gave me the right tier for them. They are not a "MUST" but they make things easy - so that's comfort tier. Cool! Though I was really waiting for XIANGLING, she's basically free and she's a really good unit worth mentioning. Very easy to build not to mention she's the QUEEN OF POLEARMS, like almost every polearms are made for her.

I use 3star weapon on him with 2 gilded dreams and deepwood artifact (mostly em and energy recharge), and he's the first character that crits and does damage for me. And pair him with xingqiu and kuki, you dont even need the fourth character for this, them 3 is enough.

I think Kokomi is a must have because she fits so many roles in one team and requires very low investment. She can not only make your gameplay experience feel more comfortable, she can also help save resources and team slots especially in the abyss. When I was a new player, I would struggle with HP in the abyss so I use Bennett in one half and Noelle in the other for healing. But Noelle, being a Geo character, does not have any elemental resonance or reaction with my team, so I'm losing a lot of reactions for the healing. I also had Barbara but her off-field hydro ring requires me to move closer to the enemies which I didn't like. When I got Kokomi, she has been a constant in my abyss teams.

I agree with everything except Nahida. there is a good unit called dendro traveler and he sure isn't as broken as Nahida, but he has very good dendro application and has free constellations so he defiantly should be mentioned in this video. I know that you can say that you don't need to get him cuz he/she's free but he should be mentioned in this list as an alternative to Nahida. Still a very good Video btw.

The thing about the dendro traveler is that they aren't really that good but the dendro element is amazing. So they end up being quite good as a result. Nahida is basically a cracked dendro traveler with better AoE, damage, and energy generation. And if we even got dendro style Xingqiu that would be just as crazy.

The logic, DMC only being good cuz of dendro being good, doesn't explain the majority agreeing DMC is a better unit than the rest except for Nahida. Also just cuz Nahida is better does not take away what DMC brings, not to mention the benefits DMC has over Nahida. Any new player should be more than happy with DMC, and need not rush for Nahida or future maybe they'll be good 5 star dendro unit.

This vid really helps since I'm FTP so I have to really think about who I want to wish for on these banners. I'm currently around AR 53 but I only recently started to care deeply about what to build my characters with since I didn't know it had so much impact. I used to just play the story, explore the world, and try to get the characters I liked whenever they were on banners. I got lucky with Xingqiu, Bennet, Ayaka and Fischl now I'm really waiting for my next chance at Sucrose. Raiden's banner is up right now and I have about 80 pity with a lost 50/50 on Yoimiya (made me so mad I quit the game for months). I main Keqing and have more than enough electro characters including Beidou and Kujou Sara so I'm unsure if I should still roll for Raiden or wait for Hu Tao's possible rerun in 3.4. Anyways, thank you for the guidance in this great quality video, my man. Subbing for sure!

I feel like most people talk about his shield being good, which is great for people getting in, but I feel like more should talk about how he can lower enemy defenses by 20% as well as having a pretty high scaling ult. He also works well with so many characters due to the fact that geo doesn’t really get in the way of the other elements if I’m correct. I do agree he’s a luxury and not needed, but definitely one to consider. I’d argue it is best to get him a little later so his shield doesn’t affect you learning the game with stuff like learning how to dodge and dealing with enemies.

As someone who's been playing for over 2 years, I pretty much entirely agree with these listings. Though Zhongli is a comfort character and not one of the main few in this list, the thing I will mention about him specifically, is that sometimes that kind of luxury of not having to worry about getting hit can lead to someone being reliant on that completely and not learning how to properly dodge attacks. I personally think dodging attacks is a very important thing to do even with a shield character, because sometimes attacks can completely destroy your shield before the cooldown is back up, or even go completely through it such as with the attacks from Rifthounds. I love using Zhongli because he's convenient but I cannot stress enough the importance of dodging sufficiently, because I feel a degree of pain watching people unable to dodge attacks that are surprisingly easy to dodge with practice, only because they've lived in their shields for far too long. Also, even though she's an inferior option to Zhongli, Noelle built will full DEF% can fulfill a relatively similar function even though it's a bit on the weak end, and you can even tank attacks with her when her shield is down if you have to because her defense is so high that some of the big hits from enemies feel like small scratches. tl;dr If you have Zhongli do not neglect learning to dodge.

My favorite way to protect myself and learn an enemies moves is the using the character Beidou. She was my first character and I dodged like a champ using her. Was forced to learn how the enemy moves for that full counter goodness

I agree with almost everything other than Kokomi just being an "comfort" character. She is also hydro and provides a really good off field AoE hydro application and on top of that providing a massive healing which I guess is necessary for current abyss... because zhongli's shield can be overriden by rifthounds, wolflord boss and even if XQ provides decent healing it is not better than dedicated healers. Also, if you're playing Ganyu on freeze team XQ is incompatible for her.. XQ is really good but I think in some scenarios kokomi can really outshine him And again considering you can only have one XQ just like bennett you might need one more hydro character because it is a really essential element.. Also, even if you say Yelan don't provide defensive compatibility like XQ she is a better damage dealer than him and can be played even on field as well as off field, her skill even provide grouping capability to some extent and you can use her special charged shot in a while to deal an reasonable amount of damage... Just for clarity, I don't hate XQ or like Kokomi and Yelan more than him but we should consider thier benefits too So, I agree Xingqiu is a necessity but getting either Kokomi and Yelan other than him should be a good point to consider too just like Anemo supports

Good video! But I disagree with a few points: 1. Venti I often use him but since Inazuma he really does fall behind Kazuha and Sucrose. He is still very strong but he is not so future proof and versatile as the other too as he is more focused around dealing damage himself rather then buffing your team and that he can't stagger/pull very large enemies and bosses is a huge dent in his kit. Sucrose has Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayer and Sac, Teaser comp is where she shines the most and all around I would say she is easily the strongest of the three. Kazuha is more like a comfort pick for Sucrose, he is not as strong as her as his buffs are around as good as Sucrose but his choice of weapon is bad. Anemo Catalyst just really shows the strength of VV Artifact. 2. Ayaka She is almost locked behind freeze wich depends on hydro character and a specified playstyle. Yes freeze is strong but it is more of a comfort team comb than anything. Especially when fighting enemies that can't be frozen (as example bosses) the problem with building around blizzard strayer becomes apparent that really holds true as the situation to use Ayaka is (depending on the vid) against around 1 or 2 enemies. Ganyu for example can constantly apply cryo off field and has the flower thingy as defense so her offense crit shots can be shot at a save distance. When you want to use Ayaka the same way you almost need a suck like Venti wich also solves the problem with freezing. So you can choose: Ayaka is either dependent on a anemo support or not versatile (and almost ever dependent on hydro). 3. Collei and Dendro Traveller vs Nahida My reasoning here is simply the cost. When you need fast Dendro application yes Nahida is great but Collei is better. Simply put sac on her and she becomes a monster even better then Nahida but even without sac she is still just as good as Nahida for that Job. If you need long time Dendro application again: Nahida is ok but Dendro Traveller is just better by a mile. You get both a copy of Collei and Dendro Traveller (him with cons) almost for free just by playing the game (like Xiangling and the other Traveller Variations). And if you want to use a electro dendro team comp then it is better to let your electro character be the damage source as the dendro element is not yet fully explored with characters and kits. And as Alheithem came out dps Nahida yes is still viable but again Alheithem is just better. The only reason you could say Nahida is a better pick kit wise then Collei and Traveller is the buffs from her burst. And that's why I think either mention all three or none. 4. Actual Fish Kokomi Her healing is insane yes but that is not why I would recommend her. The Hydro element is. Her off field application with the jelly is just very versatile in a specific area but is not locked behind normal attacks (seems small but for quick burst or plunge/charged attack or any other non NA team it is devastating). She is one of the easiest character to build, has access to Thrilling Tale of Dragon Slayer and fills the healer role with literally the strongest element in the dendro meta.

Zhongli was my first 5 star and one thing you didn't mention is what his comfort offers. Because of Zhongli I was able to survive domains like Noblesse as a low-AR player and do them solo. Within a month I could do that domain in under a minute routinely, and it's extremely hard to survive that domain if you're new. He basically enabled me through his safety. Love him.

I think characters like Zhongli and Qiqi are great pre-end game when you're trying to tackle content that you are under leveled for. Once you're levelled enough that you don't have to worry about dying all the time then they lose their necessity and become more comfort characters as you said.

When you're new and still building your team the battles take longer and it's easier to die. Also you're probably doing more exploring and fighting a lot of enemies and when your team is weak these enemies can still be challenging. For these reasons having a good healer really helps with survivability without needing food and trips to the beacons to heal. Qiqi is one of the most powerful and consistent healers. Since she can heal with her E you can heal an unlimited amount - similar to Barb, but more powerful and it doesn't freeze you when fighting cryo enemies. Also her healing scales off attack and heals the team while she attacks, so you can do some damage while you heal (not a lot but some). When your team is stronger then the strength of healing is less interesting so you then want your healer to have another purpose. Unfortunately for Qiqi, this is when she becomes less interesting because she isn't great at anything else except healing.

Nilou is good enough with dendro traveler, collei, barbara. It's very easy to use and it doesn't require good artifact too. It's not a must pull but for people who is having trouble with abyss, this is your best option.

Maxed Kaeyo and Maxed Rancor say otherwise... when he don't get killed by lagged hits (seriously its like you get him goping on a combo he deals all the damage powering through the attack taking no damage then when you stop the damage oneshots him.. failed abyss floor 5 nineteen times due to that)

I really love playing Kuki Shinobu. She's an amazing healer, has a good off-field Electro application (for hyperbloom/aggravate teams). She's strong as a hyperbloom bot or a healer in any Electro-based team. And she's cheap to itemize too : just focus on HP% - ER & EM substats, HP% Sands/Goblet/Circlet for max healing or EM/EM/EM for max reactions and you're good to go ! So if you need a support or a good electro-applier, maybe you should consider the Arataki Gang deputy leader. :)

I currently use her as support in a Aggravate team with Keqing as the driver, Nahida and her insane Dendro application and Venti for the crowd control. I tried with Sucrose instead of Venti, but Nahida gives already so much EM that I find her passive useless in this comp.

Looks so cool in that suit! Would you recommend I buy a starter account that includes him for $20? Most of my characters I mentioned are on my ps5 account. I do have an account on my Steam Deck but not that great of characters! Also, what do you recommend I use when going into the frozen region? I started during the Kokomi/Ganyu banner and your guides have been really helpful. Switching Bennett to Prototype Rancour and Venti to Stringless gave them a big boost immediately.

I was lucky to get both Razor and Albedo so early, a month later I got Bennett as well. The 3 combined with Xingqiu, Chonyun, Yan Fei, Aether, and Barbara are my top best and rely on them more than anyone else. Now unlike the others, I cannot have a team without Razor in it, he's always the one to deliver the big damage to the enemies. I also happeend to have him C4 so far.

I would like to propose something wild. In my first ever run of the game I had Qiqi very early on. In fact almost from the moment I unlocked wishing. She ended up being my account panic button where I could switch to her, put on the healing orb and just let loose with a high attack stat. He healing orb also deals 3 rounds is passive healing to whoever is on field which I think is often overlooked. And yeah sure it has a super long cool down but there are ways to get around that with 4 star weapons you can easily get. Qiqi's orb circles her 12 times in total and it hit's whoever is around her in melee range which is the essential range for qiqi to be in. So every hit with a sacrificial sword equipped is a chance for that cooldown to vanish. The fact it can remain on field while she vanishes for someone else can be great for Cryo application for you to follow up with anyone else with higher Elemental mastery for like a freeze team and all the while it's passively healing you. If they all need healing then Qiqi attacks super fast with wide arcs. She can hit multiple opponents very quickly and often which really buffs her healing abilities and their applications considering that healing orb has 14 seconds on field. You don't ever have to use her burst which is expensive and not that good until C6 admittedly but ultimately you will never need it especially with revival food items in stock. I find her far better than Kokomi and I use the Maiden Beloved Set with as much Attack% as I can get with the final bit being Healing bonus. She's a strong DPS with Strong healing and you can even use her to solo (Not fake solo with multiple people backing her but truly solo) the Cryo Regisvine by using her healing to keep her in the fight. Even if she can'rt deal cryo damage she can still heal from her attacks Having a healer reduces the need for a shielder though so I recommend either using a healer or a shielder. Qiqi rant aside, Anemo is still my favourite element. So long as you have a back up element to Swirl (Can be any of the 4 available if you aren't facing a fight with elements already present) then Swirl deals a lot of damage and keeps that up all the time even if it can't crit and tbh you don't need it to. Additional notes from me also include that if you don't have Zhongli or a Claymore, the overload reaction will destroy rocks and Ice easily. Ice acts like meltable rocks meaning it weak to heavy damage from claymores and Overload and I think Zhongli as well I think my built characters were Zhongli, Noelle, Qiqi, Ganyu, Kazuha, Sucrose, Diluc, Yanfei, Yelan, Childe, Raiden and Beidou with my most used 4 being Kazuha, Qiqi, Diluc and Raiden
