Dude, I love how you explain stuff. Sometimes I find these types of videos too nerdy and I come away with more questions than answers. I've been considering whether I need a light meter and looked into that exact model. I just got the Tide Optics ND filters because of you (loving them) so once I might add the light meter next. Cheers man! Keep 'em coming! 🚀🚀🚀🚀

Sam, thank you - you have helped me make sense of a subject that absolutely made no sense to me :) I love film and have stuff I feel it's worthwhile shooting [but then i would, wouldn't I🤣], but I've always felt myself to be one of the "all the gear but no idea" brigade until now. I just love the way you explain things so clearly and in a way my bear-with-a-small-brain can understand. And it's all leavened by your sharp sense of humour and the outtakes most KZbinrs would edit out. Thank you!

Finally!!!! I have been wanting to start a KZbin channel (indoor talking head videos). Know nothing about cameras, video, editing, etc. I bought the Sony ZV-E10 because a bunch of KZbinrs say it's the right one. The settings are overwhelming to me and it's filled with jargon and options that fly over my head. This is the first time I see a video where I kind of start to understand some of those core concepts. I wish there were more videos like this for all the other dozens of concepts one needs to understand.. Bro, I don't know you, but if you have a Sony ZV-E10 with original lens and can explain step by step how to set up the camera for indoor talking head videos for KZbin, that would be lifesaving, literally. Conversely, I can always try to to sell the Sony ZV-E10 and get that new DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and have less settings....lol.

Two things: 1: This has been immensely helpful for me, as someone who has a nice camera but videography is a tool for me to share my art practice. I'm not a videographer. Thank you 2: I can't help but hear "shitter speed" when you say shutter speed. Granted I'm watching/listening to this while I clean and keep rewinding so I've probably hear you say "shutter speed" 3 or 4 times more than the average person lmao. Nothing to be insecure about, so I'm hope this doesn't come across that way. I just wanted to share an observation :)

Awesome videos, Sam! I have watched at least three of yours today, and I like that you cover all the bases on each subject in a very clear way. I bought an external monitor to set my exposure using false colours, and manually white balancing each scene with a white card. I'm glad you brought in the light meter and introduced the concept of on an incident reading as opposed to a reflective reading. Using the in built meter can often be misleading on bright, or dark, scenes as the camera tries to expose for 18% grey. Perhaps that might be the subject of another video and using a grey card?

We're a young channel on KZbin. But we always wanted to be quality-centric with both our content and the way we shoot. Starting in an era with computational videography, I think we were somewhat spoiled with how the newest smartphones did it. We started with that. And gradually moved to using our Sony ZV-1. We fell in love with it, more so their picture profiles, and just how much control we could get in post with the end result from a camera! No matter how hard a phone tried, once you're used to using a device with a bigger sensor, there's really no going back. But even then, fear gripped us with how complicated everything looked from manual white balance to exposure, shutter speed and aperture controls. All the concepts. I stuck with using the Program Auto mode. It was pretty cool. And considering we shot dogs and animals mostly, and on a gimbal to boot, it made sense. We still knew that there was a lot of value in manual control though. But after going through tens of channels, we found you. You inspired so much confidence with your explanations. We're using full manual controls in controlled environments now. And it's been amazing! Still a few mistakes here and there. But baby steps! As the person behind the camera, I feel so much more connected with the control I have now. And my partner's pretty excited about this as well. I've since devoured your content. From clean concepts to information dumbed down so even beginners are able to feel at ease with the intimidating world of proper cameras, thank you. Funnily enough, we wanted to save enough to eventually upgrade to a Sony A7C. But since watching your content, we've since locked our eyes onto the Lumix S5. An added thank you for that. Much love! 🙂

That's all fine information wanted to point out to every one, However, if your shooting LOG, lets say Sony SLOG 3 well you most likely want to shoot 1 or 2 stops over exposed, and than bring it down in post, that is what these Dynamic range nerds do, you see they do this trick to get good exposure all around background and subject because setting proper exposure especially out doors is tricky because of harsh sunlight so they want to be able to bring out the blow out crap in post.. How ever I do Shoot in Log and only over expose a quarter stop over but i don't do it because of easy exposure settings I do it that way for easier color grading so i only need to go 1 quarter stop over for that.. and i don't shoot a the Native Log ISO people think if you shoot at base ISO like 100 or 200 you can't shoot log which is nonsense, you can shoot SLOG 3 and use ISO 200 it's going to make your image even better, how ever your going to need more light to shoot a those lower ISO numbers unless your shooting out doors, so in STUDIO you need plenty of light which is what i do i use multi powerful defused lights to get a good light balance without blowing out parts of the scene and shoot at 200 ISO almost every time, WHY?? because you get hardly any noise in your image and you don't have to over expose and than in post bring the exposer down trick to darken the noise, that is what these people do, they overexpose, And than bring the exposer down so the nose goes away. But if you shoot at 200 ISO to begin with you don't need to do that crap because there is no noise to begin with.. Now i have the SONY FX30 and i use the Ninja V+ so there is a setting in my camera to out put my camera's REC 709 LUT out of the camera into the NINJA so i don't have to apply the LUT in post, this works best for me because i can see on my NINJA monitor exactly what i'm getting SHOOTING LOG after what it would look like applying the LUT in POST, so that way i don't have that BS to do in post. and i only overexpose 1 quarter stop over this is the safest setting my image is never too dark introducing noise and in post if i need i can go down 1 quarter stop easily and i never have highlights too blow out ever.. Most of the time i don't even need to touch the exposer slider just the highlight, and boom it's perfect.. Here is a video that Gerald Undone did about if you can Shoot LOG and use ISO 200 if you don't believe me he proved it.. go to his channel and look for "Shooting Below Native ISO - Good Idea or Bad?"

Thanks for this. I know how to get exposure out the gate. My issue is, say for example I am following someone from behind and the exposure is perfect. I then, l pan around them from the front. Even though the ISO is on auto the transition exposure is super slow. The expoure does not stay consistent or even. How do you compensate for that? I have a sony a7s 3. If you have any insight I'd appreciate it.

Hi. In an ideal world, for example, a film set, everything would be lit the way you wanted it in each scenario. But then if the conditions naturally change, then that’s what SHOULD be seen in camera. You should have dark and light areas. BUT if you did need the exposure to change, the Sony FX6 camera has auto VND and auto ISO which is an amazing feature. You could use a focus motor mounted to a VND filter or de-clicked aperture ring. 🤩🎥 all fun stuff 😂

You mentioned you would explain how to control the exposure also by changing the shutter… do you have any tips for that? Thanks
@SamHolland
@SamHolland 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. You could change the shutter speed but it will alter the motion blur so you would usually stick to the 180 rule which is double the frame rate. But there are no rules 😛 do what you want to make it look how you want. Just be mindful 🙏🏻

Great explanation! Actually really diggin all the R5/R6 videos for reference! Quite funny that you are probably one of a handful who suggest the light meter in the camera - which I do too! Sadly Canon doesn‘t offer any metering mode in video - wondering what their algorithm is on this but my question regarding this and metering with the Sekonic: do you still tend to overexpose by one step in general when focusing on skin tones? 😎

Ok… great video but I have some things I’m unsure about. I am a photographer and used to using light meter or creating my settings. What I’m confused about is video only. If shooting clog3 which I heard is a bit more exposed over clog can I use the lightener for this? Or is it better to use false color or zebras at 40? If shooting video outside is one or the other faster for getting exposure? It’s tough because you shoot photos and see results here in video or has no color grading so harder to manage? Is using the histogram preferable? Thanks for the video
@SamHolland
@SamHolland 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Great question. Exposure is tricky because not only is it a science, but it’s also a creative choice. For example you don’t have to stick to 40IRE. You could go over or under depending on the “style” you’re going for. My advice is just a good starting point to get you going. Once you can do this, you’re free to go wherever you want, creatively. You could use a LUT on your camera or monitor to check if it’s looking good. But in the meantime here’s another video that may help kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJi0f4Wbgtajhac Thanks for the question

Hey Sam awesome video tha k you.. Iv just bought a zx1e as want to improve my hiking and vanlife videos. Do you think the Sony 16 to 50 would be a good all rounder lenses. I don't want to take a lot of kit and I am a solo shooter. Might get a black mist. Any advice appreciated. I find knowing what exposure to use if you want a nice dusk, low light shot, how to knwo if its under or over exposed and what fstop. Also better to shoot, then move the camera closer or use zoom?

Hey Sam, this might have been touched in the "Considerations" section, but is there ever a reason to *intentionally* over- or under-expose footage? (Confusingly) I hear some videographers say things like: "I always overexpose my Sony XYZ footage 1-2 stops and adjust in post"-why would someone do that? Is it something to do with the camera's dynamic range, in which case it varies camera-to-camera and I'll never fully understand? 😜
@SamHolland
@SamHolland 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes. This video was about the fundamentals of how to “read” and alter your exposure which is why I didn’t go into the topic of overexposing log footage. Maybe I will in another video… But basically, log footage can retain a lot more information in the highlights because of the dynamic range. By overexposing you can bring the exposure down in post instead of trying to add more light which will add grain to your image. So I tent to overexpose my c log footage by 1 stop. I hope this helps. 🤩

For my Sony i Need to overexpose 2-3 stops because the a7c can not handle shadows very well in edditing its easyer to turn highlights down than to turn shadows up.

How do you handle situations where the light changes? Like walking a trail with mix of shadow areas and bright areas.
@SamHolland
@SamHolland Жыл бұрын
That’s where things get a little more complex. The better the dynamic range is, the easier it is to handle the changes in light. The Sony FX6 has an auto VND built in which is just an incredible feature but if you don’t have that, you just have to set the exposure somewhere inbetween the brightest and darkest part and use lighting in a creative way. Hope this helps 🙏🏻🎥

Does the same apply for LOG footage? I usually use the cameras EV meter similar to how you showed in the video. But I’ve noticed I get a bit of noise in the shadows.
@SamHolland
@SamHolland 3 жыл бұрын
What camera/log profile are you using? This video is a guide for measuring exposure and compensating for it in general. Different cameras will have different ways of exposing to suit but these principles will apply to log still. Most log profiles will require you to over-expose slightly so that you don’t have to add brightness in post, meaning your shadows will be cleaner. I hope this helps and thanks for watching 🤩🙏🏻🎥

As far as for C-Log in the R5/R6 cameras, do you expose to the right at all? Or do you exposure “proper” according to the cameras exposure meter?
