I am a hobbyist. Thank you for explaining the advantages of using filters. The live examples were the best for furthering your point. I typically use the filter that the salesperson suggested simply to protect my glass. Now I have a better understanding. I'm ready to practice and create.

I LOVED this video Laura. I always felt overwhelmed by filters because I didn't understand them. Reason why I've never used them before. You explained in such an easy way how they work. THANK YOU! I feel a bit more confident now when choosing one. I think I may go for a polarizer to start with but that pack is so good. It has all the filters we need! 😍

As always, glad to see you dropped a new video, Laura. I love your style. 🙂 You are on point, the filters we really need are just NDs and cpl. But mist ones are less useful, I think. You see, if we shoot without the mist filter, we still can achieve the same result on post, but the opposite is impossible: we can not "unmist" what was shot with mist filter without any loss of quality. So we can end up with having bad source files.

Excellent video Laura, I don’t currently have any “sunglasses for lenses” but your examples clearly show why they are very important. Being able to take pictures In sunlight without the sky being too burnt out is the difference between and good picture and a great one. I also love the mist filter……such an amazing effect 😊 thank you for the video this week, excellently produced

3:45 mist filters changed my photography game so much, even though I have done professional photography for years. It is just a certain style that I love about it so much. I also created some for myself with very cheap filters and I put hairspray onto those filters. After them being dried they make an amazing self made haze/mist filter! What's also amazing: Just using some plastic wrap that I put around the front of my lens.

Have you tried the small filters that go between lens and sensor? I might look into getting some of those. The Freewell system looks great but you have to buy a set for each filter ring size. Which if like me you shoot Fuji it pretty much means every lens takes a different filter size. Step up rings are annoying but essential if you want to save money. Great videos btw!

Hey Laura I think you got things a bit confused here with the ND filters. They are good for landscape photography for long exposure shots or when you want to capture motion blur not for any other situations in my oppinion. Most modern cameras can have the shutter speed as high as 1/8000 and the lower end ones at 1/4000 and that should be enough to use f1.4 or 1.8 no matter how bright it is outside, so for portraits the shutter speed really doesn't matter because you don't need motion blur.
@LucasPitcher13
@LucasPitcher13 Жыл бұрын
Agreed ...unless you want to use a lower SS for specific effects (eg a portrait with background motion blur), or when using non-HSS) flash with a low maximum sync speed, or combining flash and constant lighting, or to avoid hotspots in exceptionally bright conditions... There are proably other situations, too. 🙂

@LauraBC

Lightroom does an amazing job for this. :)) But exactly as you said Abdulla, some filters are AWFUL. They change the tones way too much or create weird gradients on the photos. That’s why I never bought cheap filters. For other kind of gear it’s fine to get affordable options. But for filters, unfortunately, we have to spend the money. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m very happy with both Polar Pro and Freewell. You have to be careful when shooting to don’t over do it in certain light situations. But you’ll be able to see in the pictures if you over did it or not. I like to be very gentle with the filters. Just rotate enough to balance the light. If done too much, the photos can come out too dark or with too altered colours. 🙏🏼

Lens size still dictates the size of circular filters, where as square filters usually fits a wide range of lenses of different sizes without vignetting. Yes they have their problems but I find less than the screw in circular filters. Another benefit of square filters is stacking.

What is the downside of shooting at a really high shutter speed for a portrait? That's the only one I don't understand. I get not wanting to play with aperture because, perhaps you are shooting wide open for DoF, but what would be the downside on a portrait of a really high shutter speed?

Don't use any variable ND on wide angle lens! The only variable ND whis doesn't create X effects is in EF - RF adapter for Canon which goes between camera and lens. Every variable ND with is on above front element of your lens will create X effect because variable ND is two polarising filters on top of each other
