I'm on the verge of being kicked out of my master's degree programme as a result of not being able to work on my thesis at all for more than two months. Procrastination is kind of ignorance of discipline. To bash procrastination read Atomic Habits by James Clear. My discipline is nothing more waking up with a cup of coffee, a notebook and a pen in the morning. My study takes less than one hour on each subject. Smallness is mighty. My study are various such as grammar, writing, copywriting, programming for whole morning. From getting up to my kitchen table with a coffee to do the study takes less 5 minutes. I must admit my first meal starts at 2pm every day. After meal, I am free to roam any books because I am bored and I let my curiosity guide me.

Find my why is really difficult, especially for me at this moment. I procrastinate so much, that I don't write my final assignment (kind of thesis for my bachelor degree) anymore. Each day past, each day I wake up anxiety filled up my heart and my mind, but I can't get myself to do my responsibility. I feel empty when doing it, I just can't. Everybody starts telling me that it's the end, it's the final step and I'll be graduate. I want it too, but I can't. I also feel so scared of what will coming after I graduate, I'm not sure this field is a right path, there is so much anxiety and I over think too much.

Usually I can't sit through a 15 minute video, much less listen and pay attention to it but you kept hitting lines after lines of wisdom which really resonated with me in terms of what I'm doing wrong at the moment and how I should find a solid 'why' and just do it without overthinking. In the back of my head I knew these to be the case but hearing it spoken out to me like this was so invigorating. Thanks so much Math Sorcerer !

Hello. I'm at the age of 15 now, a tenth grader. I have to say that I do have the motivation to become great at math. This isn't a problem for me. Just yesterday I was watching your videos on topology (Because why not 😂). I understood everything from your first three videos but after reaching the fourth I realised that I needed knowledge on calculus. I have saved two videos on calculus and precalculus, both summing up to 15 hours and oh man, when Christmas arrives when I'll have 15 days without school I'll just go for it. It's such a blessing to know how valuable knowledge is. Most of my classmates, even those who are good students, only study in the pursuit of good grades and they usually don't care about education. They feel joy whenever school is cancelled for a day and I'm the only one who values and enjoys school. And I'll utilise that because I want to excel at maths and science.

Keep pushing and with your attitude you will get very far but be careful on judging and belittling others (I know, kind of hypocrite to say that while writing this message). This is one of the best pieces of procrastination advice I've come across. If there's one thing I would add, it's that sometimes people have a fear of the tasks they need to complete. This fear could stem from past negative experiences or concerns about the future. In any case, I believe that acknowledging that it's going to be painful at first is the first step, and realizing that the pain will fade away may help overcome this fear. It's similar to getting a medical injection - it's painful at first, but the pain will go away, and the end result is better to your well-being that doing nothing.

Discipline isn't tyranny; it's a negotiation. It emerges from the alignment of values and actions. Other things that affect it. - The building of habits. Having structure in your life makes it easier to add more structure. - Conscientiousness. Some people feel misalignment from values more strongly, and so it is easier to be aligned.

@@AJAZZist You should give a listen to some of the talks by the author (just searching for James Clear Atomic Habits will get you some results). The principles are very few and simple, and he usually gets the point across within 10-20 minutes. And to be fair, once you understand those few things the most of what you'll get from the book is examples of how people have implemented them in real life. I.e. you won't necessarily need to read the entire book after that, but some specific ideas might be interesting enough that you'll dive only into those chapters.

I agree with you on the whole awards and degrees thing. I've never cared about being officially recognized for things. Technically I still care about getting a high school diploma because there are jobs that do require high school graduation. Technically I still think post high school certification is important because there are some jobs that require it. For example, with engineering you need a freaking degree unless it's just the internship with internships as the expectation that you can get a degree and than go on to be an actual engineer.

I have a brief question. I’m extremely passionate about Mathematics as-well as Physics. I’ve been experiencing a decline in a mental health recently & it doesn’t take away completely my why, meaning & interest in mathematics, but I notice when I’m not in a good mental state i.e (Disorganized thinking that has become habitual, Compulsions & Overthinking characterized by Stress & Worry, a loss of mental clarity as-well as distortion in my focus & concentration) I seem to approach maths quite differently & can’t see, lose the meaning behind what’s happening or how to understand what’s happening & so I tell myself I don’t want to touch my precious Mathematics whilst being in this state? Should I still persist to do maths , am I overthinking or should I assess my situation & primarily work on putting my self in a good mental state before approaching Math & Physics? Please get back to me! I’m asking this because I know there’s a true beauty behind maths, which cannot be be expressed through words, that one can reach!

OMG, this!! I feel like math is too precious for me to be doing in such a state too! Like it's some thing very powerful and requires only me in a highly absorbent state where I get the intuition and not just brute my way through. I don't know how to stop overthinking. Any tips? thanks. It's interesting you brought up the guitar because I used to play my guitar a lot before the pandemic. Worth mentioning, one of the reasons why people procrastinate is that, ironically, they want to study well and be in the perfect mood for that, have a lot of time and no distractions. The issue is, the perfect conditions seemingly never come, and it's always better to at least try to study, than not study at all and postpone it for eternity.

My favorite Starcraft streamer (Artosis) says this about procrastination: "Do not try to change your actions with your mind - rather, change your mind with your actions." Fancy way of saying - Just do it! It's easy to tell yourself you'll do something later, or to try to get yourself in the "mindset" to do it, but nothing beats just going to do something and making it a habit.

This works for some people and not for others. Like is addressed in the video, the ''why'' is very important especially if it includes learning a complex skill in which one has periods in which they might struggle. Building habits doesn't come as easily for everyone. '"Just do it'' isn't going to cut it. I truly believe people work so differently that one group of people might like building habits and others just do things when they have bursts of inspiration or energy. I'm not attaching any value judgements to either of those approaches here.
