It's all a million different ideas and farts in the dark. I think it's more the opposite. Shotwell is closer to what you can call the PR side, though that's not what she does. Elon is just eccentric and spews some crap out on twitter sometimes while he's not sleeping for weeks on the production line. It's not by design that it works out as if it's PR. It's further from PR than what shotwell does. But who really knows.
@uazuazu3 жыл бұрын
Elon knows what he is doing too. If he says, "It might work, or it might blow up, but it will be a good show either way", it takes the pressure off and motivates the engineers. At the recent Tesla AI stream it was similar, he was saying that the new AI board team's goal was to make something good enough so that the main AI team wanted to throw away their GPU pool, after a questioner asked a question with an impossible answer (about locality of message-passing). He knows how to keep engineers in the sweet spot of productivity, with an achievable goal, but with the space and freedom to overperform and get extra honour. Gwynne Shotwell making sure the figures add up and that the business is there from the market and that everything keeps on track is so so important too. So many of the decisions have the hallmarks of both of their thinking on it, e.g. fly Starlink satellites to prove the F9 reusability/reliability when no-one else will risk the rockets on their Nth flight: win-win, leaving everyone else in the dust.

Your presentation examining potential for space manufacturing corresponded with my own belief that it is vital to learn to walk before you run. In order to do that, I believe we would do well to become a space-dwelling species before we strive to become an interplanetary one. For one thing 'pseudo gravity' vital to long term health of our species during prolonged presence in space can be easily maintained by habitats in what I think of as 'neutral' gravity simply by constructing them to withstand rotation at requisite velocities. Acquisition and processing of resources and manufacture of myriad products from them in micro gravity would be of enormous benefit to interplanetary colonization. This is eloquent of sensible sustainability not only from a standpoint of enabling research and proving technologies that will not only be vital to space travel in general, but also to supporting interplanetary colonies in diverse ways. This precept is emphasized with regard to an absolutely vital capacity to respond to ever present potential crises more rapidly, reliably and effectively from space based installations than the surface of Earth. Facilities on the lunar surface are inarguably a step in that direction but even they are subject to limitations that need not necessarily apply to any entirely based in space.

And wait, but he loves rapid progression, but when you don’t have enough money it’s not a good decision. And getting the F9 from California to an island in the Pacific is hard and expensive. So Elon and probably Gwynn worked hard to solve his mistake, which he is really good at. Gwynn is the one who made the company complete most off the contracts, SHE is the one who even made them get those contracts. Great video, and I am a big Elon and Gwynne fan so this isn't coming from a place of antagonism, but point to point travel is bs... At least for human passengers. It may be possible for cargo but rockets exert ~2.5-3gs of force to get above the karaman line and that requires young healthy individuals to undergo intensive pilot training to stay awake during. Imagine grandma trying to travel point to point... Or anyone overweight, anyone with asthma, anyone with basically any pre-existing conditions. Airplanes accelerate at something like a max of 0.5gs They would need to slow down the rate of acceleration to lower the g-forces significantly and that would make it non-competitive with airlines. Cargo may work if you need to deliver something faster than an jetliner can but for anything that doesn't need to be delivered extremely fast it will always be cheaper to use an airplane because you have the atmosphere doing a lot of the work vs the rocket which exerts a lot of energy to fight through the atmosphere.
@JohnCooganPlus3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’ve heard this argument before and at first I was totally on board. But did you see Blue Origin last week? A group of largely untrained people, some of them very old, got in a rocket and went to space without a pilot. It seems extremely trivial to go from Blue Origin’s up and down flight path to an angled and longer flight path to get some real distance. If an 82 year old can make that trip, it doesn’t seem crazy that an in shape 40 year old business executive would go get trained in order to cut down on travel time for work.
@Anthrofuturism3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnCooganPlus very good point. I imagine the first adopters of ptp will be executives who will exchange their private jets keys for rocket ships because who tf wouldn't. Since ptp won't require the vehicle to orbit it won't need to accelerate as fast, but I still don't see it ever being as cheap as airlines for general travel... But that's like saying "airplanes will never be as cheap as ships." People will obviously pay for the time saved and the whole "space" experience. They will need to fix the whole 98% success rate thing to something more along the lines of 99.99% like airplanes, but I have no doubt they will if they haven't already. I'm sure there will be tragic accidents the only question I have is whether or not the American public can stomach the learning curve and losses of life associated with adopting a new technology like this similar to how the airplane evolved, but the airplane became integrated into American society when the general public was more pioneering and willing to take risks before we were traumatized by ww2 and became extremely concerned with safety. I am optimistic about it though. If this seems like a complete 180 from my previous statement-that's because it is lol. Your observation changed my mind.

@@Anthrofuturism yeah, I think the more interesting debate is around timeline. Like, I’m pretty confident that this will happen eventually, but I would bet it’s closer to 20 years away than 10 years away. I think that clip is a few years old as well.

@@JohnCooganPlus 20 years seems about right. Same with lunar tourism. The next two decades are going to be very interesting for sure.

If you’re Elon and Gwynn fan, you would know they don’t speak like, “ Ok, these are the reasons why we can’t go to Mars, never mind point to point on Earth, as it’s a lot more difficult.” To them, if it doesn’t violate the laws of physics, then it’s possible.

I disagree if say "only" gwynne shot well is there reason why space x works.. for such a giant company for sure there are dozens of engr's and scientist who do the dirty work .. its a giant team of brilliant people work together and believe on elon musk vision..
@JohnCooganPlus3 жыл бұрын
100% agree. Tried to find an interesting angle for the title to encourage people to click. Obviously SpaceX is a massive team effort. Gwynne just has a really interesting story that doesn’t get talked about all that much.

Shotwell is amazing, but its not really fair to all the people at SpaceX to say, she's the only reason SpaceX works
@JohnCooganPlus3 жыл бұрын
100% - obviously a team effort, and Musk is critical to everything SpaceX does. Just trying to draw a bit of attention to Gywnne.

I will watch anything about Gwynne Shotwell she is the most extraordinary person in the world at this moment... Being able to keep everything on track while the founder is going mad taking all her resources building the maddest thing humans has ever invented ....

Elon does NOT keep Gwynne in the shadows. She is welcome to take as much or as little of the SpaceX success credit as she wants. Her plate is always very full so I believe she is thankful that Elon is willing to take a lot of the PR pressures off of her -- not because he wants the glory but because Gwynne appreciates it. Constant PR pressures are not fun but they must be properly addressed for the value they add to the business.

What a hell of a difference between a hidebound risk-averse 'legacy corporation'[we could name a few] and the visionary, forward planning organization that is SpaceX.
