I don't usually comment. I'm a woman and this message rings true for us too. I'm sitting here stunned because I'm super guilty/convicted. I'm always looking up ways to plan, productivity hacks, etc. But actually doing it? I can always find an excuse. And it has made me very unhappy with myself. My words for 2024 will be Discipline and Consistency. But I'm working on it now. I have to be wiling to make the sacrifice, even when I don't feel like it, and whether or not I have the support of others. Thank you for the kick in the butt today. Let's get to work!

In the Discourses of Epictetus, a Roman slave/stoci philosopher, he talks about advising an athlete who was supposed to be working out. Epictetus says "show me your shoulders" and the athlete replies with "here, take a look at the weights I have." The philosopher responds "I am more interested to see the results of the weights." The Athlete replies, "but here, look at this book on working out I have read." The philosopher basically responds with "either show be the effects of the work or be gone. I have no interest in the tools of the work, but the work itself." These are lessons that have been reiterated for thousands of years, and yet people still forget. Keep up the good work.

Your choices are presented by your environment. If every choice you have access to is just a gradient of bad, how is it YOUR fault for making a bad choice? Certainly there's personal accountability one has to their own feelings, actions, and worldview, but these things can have no effect on a desired outcome, regardless of effort. If you're short, ugly, and broke you're only going to have access to less than desirable options. None of this is YOUR fault, it's not a matter of blame, credit, or effort. It's simply reality being real.

Nicely articulated. And a good message. As the Zen master said, “To begin, begin”. In addition to counselling men to stop thinking (and get into action), I’d encourage you to also help men to stop listening to their feelings. Societally, we’ve put too much emphasis on feelings. But our feelings are most often formed by our assessments of the situations and relationships we’re in, assessments that are holding us back. Break down the assessments - build new ones. There is gold here. Keep up the good work.
@Dominicus13
@Dominicus13 Жыл бұрын
Don’t stop listening to your feelings, nor stop planning. You just need to put proper emphasis where it belongs. Do more than you plan, and reflect on your actions. Don’t plan based on feelings, but understand your feelings and master them.
@adamj2683
@adamj2683 Жыл бұрын
“Stop listening to their feelings” is incredibly vague and counterproductive in several ways of interpreting. People need to listen to their feelings to identify why they’re stuck, how to change their thoughts and get unstuck, how to process the feelings that are coming up so they get unstuck, how to honor their unmet needs to get more of their mind to cooperate, and more. But if by listening to your feelings you mean stop completely buying into your negative feelings and letting them stop you from taking constructive action, then I would agree. But I think a better route than telling people to stop listening to their feelings is to start questioning their thinking. If they’re feeling negative feelings they should question the thinking that produced those feelings and make sure they’re thinking accurately.
@mikehogan1827

@@adamj2683nicely put. I hoped to convey a similar sentiment when I suggested that we need to look at the assessments (thinking, opinions) that drive those feelings. Thanks for this message. I went through a large chunk of my young adulthood in much the manner you first described. It caused me to justify all kinds of terrible things I perpetrated on people who loved and trusted me. The world is so soft that many young men and women have never had hard work and accountability modeled for them, nor exposed directly to it. In fact, victimhood is glorified by today's popular culture. By the grace of god, children forced me to come to terms with my adulthood and show up for the people who love me. As I move through life I now look for new ways to be better for the people who rely on me. I hope your message helps others do the same.

You’re absolutely right In everything you said Ryan. After a decade in the military, I had a 15 1/2 year break in service and finally decided to rejoin. The army told me I would have to repeat basic training due to the length of break in service. I was 45 years old and going back through basic training for a second time. None of the rejoining process was easy I just had to do the things. I’m winding down a firefighting career and spinning back up my military career at the same time. So yes, you have to do, action is the only thing that matters. Thanks for the words today brother.

My biggest issue, as a man with autism, is that I was raised to give people the benefit of the doubt and live by the Golden Rule. When one person shows themselves to be the jerk they are, I log that and move forward accordingly. Problem is, it has taken me a very long time to develop the mindset that I should stereotype people based on my observations of their behaviors and how they may compare to others I've known. If someone I've never engaged with reminds me of someone who screwed me due to their similar actions, I should probably not give that person the benefit of the doubt but make them earn my trust.

Thank you for such a wonderful message. A year ago I promised my girlfriend to get married by the end of the year & my family refused my engagement. I was depressed & disappointed for letting her down, yet she stood up by my side & said that we try again as it ain’t over yet. I decid to go all in & be the man. Thank you again

Thanks man. I needed to hear this today. As a guy, we often just need another man to just tell us to “do it” (Shia voice) as a form of affirmation and encouragement.

So based on looks alone.. I was about to leave the video… but I decided to challenge some limiting beliefs, and while I might not subscribe, or watch more videos in the future, I’m glad I stuck around for this one. Thank you.

Spot on brother!! Last year I decided to get my insurance life and health licenses and it took me a few months and then I had to do all the Medicare certifications that took a few months but now I’m doing the work and still working as a x-ray tech. Doing the work is the only way to live life!!!

Nobody has power over you? In any way, shape, or form? The choices of generations before, creating the laws and culrure yoi inhabit, have nothing to do with your choices? Extreme ownership isnt acknowledging a delusion of self -agency...its about examining why one haa the choices/options/agency which actually exist for them. You havw "all" the power? In yoir mind, or in consensual reality? Over yourself, or the entire world? I don't think this guy's advice is very deep. It seems regressive and lacks self-awareness.

@@bremlquan okay how? Of course you have complete power over your mind. Weak minded, petty, jealous people see disciplined people and don't realize how refining one's life has a positive effect on those around them because the weak minded want to make excuses and be their worst version and blame others. Crabs in a bucket loser quit making excuses, have some self respect

I needed to hear this. I’ve been remodeling a house for me and my daughter for the last 3 years. Complete remodel down to the studs. New wire plumbing and everything. I notice I get carried away in my thoughts of what the house could and will be that it distracts me from the task at hand. I noticed when I’m not daydreaming I get a lot more work done.

This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my KZbin channel 8 months ago about self development. Now I have 1,158 subs and > 900 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.

Sir, I am subscribed, although I have not received your podcast in a long time. However, I have been kicking ass and taking names. I got out of the people's republic of New Jersey and am relocating to Wyoming. I retired from the Navy Reserves in 2015 and stayed in military regs through 2019. Then covid hit, stopped working out (no excuses) and blew up like a tic. So, I have gotten off my ass, changed my diet, and started working out. Now I am 68, and the move has notbeen easy, and progress in physcial fitness has been slow, but the weight is coming off and getting muscle mass back. Even though I collect SSI and a small check from the Navy, I am going to go back to work and I am going to start investing in property and other various investments. I like the statement; do what you can, with what you got, where you're at. It is exactly what Pastor Joe, of Viking Preparedness says all the time.

@@mishasumi6827 To laugh is to risk appearing the fool, To weep is to risk being called sentimental. To reach out to another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk showing your true self. To place your ideas and your dreams before the crowd is to risk being called naive. To love is to risk not being loved in return, To live is to risk dying, To hope is to risk despair, To try is to risk failure But risks must be taken, because the greatest risk in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow or love. Chained by his certitude, he is a slave; he has forfeited his freedom. Only the person who risks is truly free.

1. Learn to activate and consistently engage the "no circuitry" in your brain. Practice impulse control 2. Wake up early, consistently 3. Pay attention to diet, what AND when it is being eaten. This also applies to the "mental" diet 4. Embrace the friction that comes with mental effort; care less about the outcome than the actual pursuit 5. Cultivate habits of exercise, meditation, stoicism, and not blaming external factors (blaming oneself actually empowers oneself)

I would add one further comment as well. There are situations that 100% are not your fault, that couldn’t be predicted, and are brutally unfair. Even in those situations, you *still* can choose the discipline to decide your attitude. Even purely horrific situations can still have a positive spin and we can force our minds to start tilting to the other side of hour glass. If we wait long enough, the grains of sand falling towards inactivity, paralysis, and despair grow too heavy to counter act anymore.
