Aviation and music Lover I work on Cruise Ships and when you encounter rough weather, the higher and further forward you are, the more you will feel movement - likewise high and at the back. The recommendation in inclement weather is low and in the middle - closest to the pivot point of the motion of the ship. In the olden days, guests used to have the most expensive suites at the top and at the front/back - the catchphrase was ‘the more you pay, the more you sway’.

As a Dutch person having lived in Cambridge for a few decades, this is my favourite crossing. We take the car, book the cheapest huts we can get - still decent - and use the bars onboard. There is also a cheaper daytime crossing without the need to book accommodation, but I prefer sleeping during most of the crossing. Next time, wander around the vessel!

Since my wife is from East Anglia, we have been doing the Hoek crossing since 1996. To begin with, it was with the HSS catamaran, which used to be the fastest McDonald's in the world and took only something in the region of 4.5 hours to cross. Since that became too expensive to operate, it was withdrawn, and we have seen our fair share of Hollandica and Britannica since. No train journeys yet, it has always been the car, both from the Frankfurt area, where we now live, and from Rutland, where we moved from. We have not done the Captain's Suite, but tried all the others, including the slightly less saloubrious but still very upmarket Captain's Class. I love the showers and the ensuite. We have found that usually, the night crossing from Harwich is interrupted too often for a good rest before the onward journey. The crossing from Hoek used to have slightly better times, and our onward journey would not be as far, so a night crossing was very comfy going that way. However, price usually dictated a day crossing, which requires a very early start in Frankfurt or an overnight stay with friends in Düsseldorf or Cologne. Going from the UK, there is a Premier Inn right next to the ferry port, which we have used numerous times and found very convenient and affordable (beats the cabin fee and you are well-rested when you get on the boat). Oh, I nearly forgot: You can also get a cabin for the day crossing, which you can just pay for after boarding. Inside cabins are nice and dark, so you can have a good rest and a shower, and the price was something in the 35 £ range, but I am sure it has gone up. We haven't been able to get back to the UK since Covid, sadly.

Hi Noel. Loved that ferry ride. I can understand your apprehension about Ferry rides but for me; I am the son of a Ship's Chief Engineer, and had many trips on ships and ferries. I recall the Herald of Free Enterprise capsizing very well as I was a Senior Forensic Investigator until I retired in 2017. The Herald of Free Enterprise incident was one of the foreign cases and Investigations we studied in the course of our profession. My main side of investigations entailed assisting the Homicide Squad to identify certain matters with respect to their enquiries, and my main lines of investigations related to serious rail accidents (suicides; Road/Train accidents. The biggest case I worked on was when A semi trailer collided with a V/Line passenger train near a town called Swan Hill in northern Victoria, killing Eleven train passengers. I had used the Stenna Line to Eire back in 1998 and was that a trip and a half. I have not met so many drunks in all my life as I did on that trip. The run was from Holyhead to Dún Laoghaire and believe me, it was the funniest trip I have ever been on. In 2001; I went back to the UK intending to take the Stenna Line ferry to the Hook of Holland BUT; I had health problems that prevented my from making that trip. Safe travels my friend, and thanks for the enjoyable postings.

Noel, one thing to remember, no matter which form of transportation we take, lots of people gave their lives to make it as safe as it is today. The Herald of Free Enterprise was something that shouldn't have happened, but, we as humans always try to find the short cut, normally we don't pay for those short cuts with a large loss of life, but when dealing with transport, it's a given that to many people will die. That also goes for planes, from the beginning of flight to now, it's sad, but true.

Noel has bravely taken tens of "suicidal" flights with african and asian airlines banned to USA and Europe but he is afraid of drowing by getting on one of the largest and most sophisticated car ferries in the world - travelling a short distance... But then I began to respect him big time as I was watching his african and asian "just about to crash" flights, were he always was very calm and composed! All these changed my mind, I like the guy now, I think he is funny and rather often I find myself binging on his videos!

I love getting those ferries. :-) I used to get them every two weeks when I worked in Arnhem and needed to take the car. The 2 berth cabins are a lot more basic (and no free mini-bar) but they are comfortable and (in normal times) you can get fairly decent food and drink in the restaurant, cafe or bar on the public deck. It's much more civilised than the plane, but as I live near Luton and (in the before time) work in The Hague, easyJet is a lot simpler and cheaper. Way to go on the drinks, by the way - Mixing like a pro! ;-)

I hate ferries having been on the isle of wight and dover to calais but having a pretty decent cabin to yourself like that would make it much more pleasurable. What puts me off is dodging the puddles of sick and the smell of cheesy wotsits. I worked on a cruise ship for 2 months in 2004 and while it was an experience I'll never forget I wouldn't do it again. I'm all about the eurotunnel these days. I can fill my pickup truck full of stuff I'd never be able to get on a plane and head out across europe camping, taking photos and playing radio. I drove down to Nice last year and really enjoyed it. That said mixing grape and grain is a bad idea on land never mind at sea.

I live 50 km from Hoek van Holland. I visit the UK at least 2 times a year. But I never used the ferry. The night departure is very expensive for a single traveler (the hut makes it expensive). The midday departure from the Netherlands is just to late for me. I visit the yearly Dad's army fan weekend in Thetford. Thetford is a village that is seved by the Greater Anglia train service. So you can travel with the combined Ferry+Train ticket and take a train from Harwich to Thetford. But the day ferry arrive in Harwich around 19.30 hours. That is very late and it is difficult to reach Thetford the same day. I traveled by Plane, Coach and Train between the UK and the Netherlands. The Ferry is simply to expensive. I only pay between €5 and €30 euro's for a flight between the Netherlands and the UK. I can choose a departure time that is convient for me. For a ferrry ticket I pay at least €45 euro's and I have a very restricted choice in departure times.

I know there is food available, and I'm surprised you didn't have breakfast there. You're right that the transitions from train to ferry to train are seamless. The "captain's cabin" may have eliminated the cost benefit, but it sure looked comfortable! I was surprised at the number of people who were NOT wearing masks!

I am a great fan of your travel reports and I completely understand your boat phobia. Very nice to see you are visiting my country on your way to Sweden. Your videos are always very nice to watch. I loved your maritime vocabulary! Keep up the great work and let’s hope soon we can travel by air again.

A few years ago I took the Marine Atlantic ferry from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland and back. The halls of the ship looked similar to this but the cabins were very spartan.

I can see how this would be attractive to tourists, especially traveling as a couple. Instead of train/flight plus hotel, you get an overnight trip in a “hotel” and you’re in Amsterdam nice and early.

Funny how a guy flies for passion and is afraid of cruse ships 🤔

Well done you!!! Ferry service looks amazing, but you didn't show any meals you might have eaten onboard.

What a beautiful suite! For that price I would definitely take the ship and rails. I was hoping to see the restaurant and other parts of the shop. It was funny watching you clear the mini bar even before departure but it calmed your nerves so that's good. Love the pic of you sitting in the window, you should frame that one to celebrates and remember your success. I am King of the World!
