Paul getting mad at himself on 2 can probably give a glance as to why he's as good as he is. He hadn't missed much to that point and it's an early in the season silver series but he's so focused on being perfect that you'd think he just missed a crucial putt at USDGC. Love it.

The "pretzel sticks" look to me like they actually could be finned boiler tubes. The are pretty gunked up, but near the bottom I can see what looks like remnants of helical fins, and they have some bare (unfinned) tube at the very bottom where they go into the PVC sleeves.
