I have had this for a few weeks. This is just such a great bible. It's not super flashy, but it is so useful. This is the best paper and print of a bible that I own and I'm comparing that to the premier 2nd edition MacArthur study bible. Yes the paper is better. While the MacArthur paper is 40 gsm, it's shiny under light and makes it hard to read at certain angles. This paper does not shine and you get all the benefits of premium paper. I love that this bible has such detailed and easy to understand book intros. Sometimes I feel that study Bibles make their intros impossible to understand on purpose. These book intros are top notch and so easy to take in and remember. Makes a huge difference. Lastly, minimal commentary is amazing! Minimal human influence is actually a blessing in some cases since we all have the ability access commentaries electronically. The reference system, index, charts, visuals... Can't rant enough about this bible.

I’m fortunate to have a nice collection of Open Bibles starting from the early ‘80’s. In my early twenties a dear friend at the time encouraged me to get my first Open Bible (NASB) and I still have that bible today. The Open Bible for me (I have a lot of study bibles!) is like an old familiar friend but stays relevant and informative. I purchased the new cloth over board edition to check out. Nelson did a real nice job on this hard cover with the grey cover and red binding. The red and grey ribbons add to the elegance. The real cherry on top is Thomas Nelson has heard our voices as consumers of mass produced bibles wanting sewn bindings and decent covers. They can’t all be leather, but I personally would rather a nice sewn bound hard cover over the horrible cheap “bonded” and glued offerings that had been available in the recent past, pushing people to go on eBay to pay crazy prices. My one negative so far is I wish TN had kept the page numbers shown of the verses in the Topical Index as I really like that when studying. Anyway nice going Thomas Nelson! Your quality has come up there with Crossway, and the Open Bible is uniquely yours! I hope this new edition does well and TN comes out with other versions like the OB had in the past. Great review as always!!!

I looked at this review and cannot believe it was 4 years ago. Randy you have provided a great resource. I have the 1990’s Open bible, yes, this was revolutionary in a study Bible that was a page turner.

Thanks for the video. I had an Open Bible years ago. Had been looking for an e-book study Bible and just bought the Open Bible for my Kindle Fire. I watched the video to compare it to the paper version. Basically they offer the same information in both. I love this Bible!

As much as I would love to have an Open Bible in either NKJ or KJ, I would have to have a larger font. 9 point "comfort print" might be great for the average individual, but not old folks like me. It would be nice to see one with a 12 point font.

I still have my NASB Open Bible from 1980's. Has some battle scars, from my days of Nursing Home ministry. One of the patients got a hold of it, and removed first part of Genesis. I think I will check this one out. Great review Randy, God bless you.

Thomas Nelson for a while was putting out real garbage that was printed in the USA....cheap paper.....cheap glued binding......shoddy covers. Then Thomas Nelson was bought out by Harper Collins and their Bible production was farmed out to China.Now we are getting quality Bibles as good prices.

Waiting for the KJV to come out later this year. On the fence about the center column. I liked the amount of words you read before switching lines on the old version which had end of verse references. My old ones falling apart. Been using Thompson since my put my old one on the shelf but I'm looking forward to getting this new version. Think the KJV it's coming out in August. I'm wondering how the font size compares to the older version of the open Bible?
@BibleBuyingGuide
@BibleBuyingGuide 5 жыл бұрын
Good question. The font looks about a point smaller in the new edition, but it's also darker and the paper is more opaque. I find the newer edition easier to read even with the smaller font.

@@BibleBuyingGuide Cool, hope that happens for you and becomes more affordable - would you recommend this bible for a good carry/travel study bible? I have all my digital stuff but sometimes we can be in limited surroundings. can I study and preach from this? 9pt font seems small for that.
@BibleBuyingGuide
@BibleBuyingGuide 5 жыл бұрын
@@ccsapastor It would be good for study, carry, and travel. If you can preach from smaller fonts then it would be great for preaching too. Personally, I usually like larger fonts for preaching and smaller Bibles for carry, but I could use this as an all-arounder.

Beautiful Bible! Wish it was a KJB...do you know if they're planning on making a KJV? Also...amazing how a Bible distributor can have a Bible printed in China...a country whereby it's ILLEGAL to be a Christian?! Where they persecute and imprison our brothers and sisters. Another example to put money before principal...frustrating! But, yes...the Bible is fantastic, although the crinkling of the pages is another example of the China printing. Thank you for another great video.

Just thinking out loud, wouldn't it be a good thing that Bibles are printed in China, a country that can be very hostile towards Christians? It's exposing people to it if nothing else, the workers in the printing factories etc, who knows where damaged or faulty copies end up etc, I would think it's better than China not even allowing Bibles to be printed there?
@AdamVine
@AdamVine 5 жыл бұрын
Derek I can see your point. Believe me, if you’re caught taking anything out of that factory, off to prison labor camp you go. But I see your point. Personally, I think we should boycott, and increase trade tariffs to such countries. These are warlord dictators persecuting Christians....it’s horrible, they’re receding millions in contracts while they hunt down and terrorize our brothers and sisters in Christ. But like I said, I understand your reasoning. However, I don’t think they have the ability to swipe bibles out of the factory, let alone read it, I’m sure they’re watched over like the Nazi gestapo watched over the Jews.

Adam, you say that about China, but in the good old USA, they banning the reading of Bibles in public schools and remember how they banned the ten commandments from a government lawn and the reciting of the Lord's praying and religious teachings in public schools? It's not just in China its everywhere including the USA. They fined a US pastor $1,000,000.00 for speaking from the Scriptures against homosexuality. Don't be so blinded, these very things are happening in your own country, or maybe you are refusing to see it.
@AdamVine
@AdamVine 5 жыл бұрын
Edward Graham I agree with you...I never said it wasn’t. I made a statement regarding China. But to think the U.S. is on par with China as to the persecution of Christians is out of touch with reality. At the rate we’re heading, I’m sure we’ll be holding underground church, church buildings will be toppled over, and pastors and all everyday believers in Jesus will be sent to prison as they are now in China....for now, for the most part, we’re dealing with the left/liberal propaganda. The U.S. is still the most free place to freely worship as. Christian. But yes, of course there’s persecution of believers in the U.S., but not like China...not anywhere near as close.

@@AdamVine Where I live the man who is going to rob you has a Bible in his pocket, but still kills you. He might have even just prayed and ask God to protect him as he goes out to commit a crime, that how "religious" we are here. That being said it is the trend almost everywhere, and though you enjoy a lot of freedom, in Jamaica we have far more freedom to worship than in the US, but even my beloved island nation is going down that path. Jesus said it Adam, that's why when we have the chance we encourage and evangelize. China like all communist nations are about the ruling elite and Christianity does not fit into their agenda

Its pretty nice update, I would like to see a large print on thinner paper . I think with the 90% line matching this thick paper really isn't needed but let's not rock the boat ...baby steps😂 Thank you Nelson, you listened to the fans, ya gave it a Smyth Sewn binding, better print, nice calfskin cover and gorgeous red letter. Thinner paper? Never heard someone wish that on a non-thinline Bible . . . People keep wishing the font was bigger, I think it's good it's this size because then there would be less words on a line and the Bible would be bigger.
@Airik1111bibles
@Airik1111bibles 5 жыл бұрын
@@Derek-rv3ee When I say thinner I don't mean thinline thin brother😉 ...Its the opacity that makes or breaks a text and line matching. I am getting tired of the heavy bible trend , they end up weighing so much people end up shelving the bibles instead of using them.
@Derek-rv3ee
@Derek-rv3ee 5 жыл бұрын
@@Airik1111bibles that's odd, I've thought the trend is for thinlines! Everyone seems to be putting out thinlines, I don't know, if it's too heavy for someone just don't buy it. Bible connoisseuring is out of hand, there's still languages without a Bible and we over here treat them like idols, collector items or something, me included. Wrestling with this these days, so distracted by all the options that I'm more concerned about having "the right Bible" than using the Bible and seeking God through it. Bible idolatry is real and hard to get out of for myself.

@@Derek-rv3ee That's a personal conviction for some folks I guess but, not an overall fact. I've heard that many times from people that direct it towards me cause they assume and or have issues themselves. I like the craftmanship like one sees other types of art or design, print , paper , leather all of that is very cool to me. I always tell people if they have issues with bible idolatry the last place they need to be is on my channel . I've had folks constantly watch my channel and say the same thing, self control is a personal issue IMO. I know an ex alcoholic that sees any type of drinking as a sin even if the person isn't a drunk he condemns them anyways cause he couldn't handle the drink. A bible is a bible brother nothing more nothing less, its what one makes of it that turns things into something sinful. For me its brought amazing testimonials of Gods love, wonderful fellowship, friendships and also a way to spread His word, .plus bless others with awesome built bibles😇 Nice chatting with ya brother, I always love these talks Jesus has used these comments over the years to help me grow in a positive way. God bless ya😇
