Khuli Chana performs versions of his songs nobody's heard before, in front of an unprepared audience on a random Tuesday morning. What makes this recording so special is we set ourselves the challenge of setting up a 3 piece band, plus 2 backing vocalists in the middle of an office foyer, being filmed on 4 cameras, while streaming the live mix onto Bluetooth headsets for anyone who picked up a set to enjoy.
As an artistic exercise, the key focus was capturing the soul of the artist - naked, raw and unfiltered - without blunting too much of the technical sharpness we envisioned at the onset of our journey... all the while being careful not to upset Karen from accounting.
What it ends up being is a bit of a smashing together of NPR's Tiny Desk and Snarky Puppy, who remain the inspiration for exploring this format, and hopefully adding something new to it.
A massive thank you to Royben Music, Jazzworx & MyThrone + their staff for lending us their talents for this little experiment.
