As someone who grew up on alternative hip hop like Ugly Duckling and Deltron 3030, let me tell you being a "nice rapper" and retaining credibility is actually harder, because it requires enough dexterity in terms of things like rhyming, flow, etc. to compensate for the inability to use profanity to emphasize specific bars (because profanity causes the listener's brain to jolt into alertness), rap aggressively to emphasize specific bars, use and vividly detail experiences with the hood to maintain artistic credibility (even on poppier songs which often have R&B singers on choruses or in instances where famous gangsta rappers feature on pop songs), etc...

I would say that DMX helped bring back that hard-core gritty street rap because all the money wraps and even some of the shiny suit face started to die out in 98 and DMX came on the scene and really blew it up and if you look at 98 into the 2000 there was a lot of hardcore shock rap and gangsta rap that was out there. However, I will also say you did have a mix of that R&B type rap from Nelly and Ja rule, but even they had a more thuggish looking image. The shiny suits pretty much faded out with DMX. The thing I say with 50 is, he definitely took it to new heights when he put out his first album. I would say overall, even since the days at the NWA, you’ve always had a balance of both gangster rap and I guess you could either say you’re more positive rap or if you wanna just call the non-gangster element of rap both have charted, but I feel they’ve changed forms overtime.
