Matt's correct. With lateral water hazards (red) all three drop options are available. With yellow stakes only stroke and distance and drop in line are available. Two club lengths no nearer the hole is only available with red stake hazards.

Good discussion about where you can drop, but to be honest it's quite a basic rule that every golfer should know. With yellow stakes you always have to drop behind the water hazard (if you drop in the flag line). I think Coach knew this but he got unsure because Dan and Mark sounded so confident about where you could drop.
@MarkCrossfield

@krusbaer11
@krusbaer11 6 жыл бұрын
Mark Crossfield okey, I got that. As I said good discussion, no hard feelings 😃. You can't drop within 2 club lengths (only red stakes) or in the hazard, so you have only two options and that is to go on the other side or use stroke and distance. To be clear, the only difference it makes when the ball falls in from the other side is that you have to drop in a straight line from where the ball last crossed the hazard (in this case, that point is on the side near green).
@johnacorr9658
@johnacorr9658 6 жыл бұрын
krusbaer11 There is often so much confusion with this rule but the simplest thing is to mark the point where the ball crossed into the hazard and that point must stay between you and the hole.
@krusbaer11
@krusbaer11 6 жыл бұрын
John A Corr yeah, I've understood that it's confusing for alot of players. As coach said, a picture of where you can drop explains it well. Dropping on the other side 2 club lengths with red stakes isn't that easy to explain in words.

You CANNOT drop it ON the hazard line because the point of entry must be kept BETWEEN the hole and where you drop. Plus, the "line" is considered IN THE HAZARD, and you can't drop a ball inside the margins of a hazard!

An additional option available only for a ball in a lateral water hazard is to drop the ball within two club-lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the lateral water hazard or a point equidistant from the hole on the opposite margin of the hazard from where the ball last crossed into the hazard. However, it may not be dropped nearer the hole. If the player can drop the ball meeting the conditions of this last option, it may be dropped on the putting green side of the water hazard.

I think even most pro's are likely to make atleast 1 bogey if they played 36 holes at a local municipal course. Molinari did that on arguably the toughest course in the world, under the most immense pressure in the biggest tourney of the year and playing with Tiger Woods.(so you have to deal with so much more people in the gallery) Just an unreal performance.

Rule 26-1 Ball Rolling Back into Water Hazard Q. My ball landed on the putting green side of a pond in front of the green, but rolled back into the pond. Where do I drop a ball to play my next stroke? A. The answer depends on the type of hazard the ball rolled into. Under penalty of one stroke, if the ball entered into a water hazard, (yellow stakes and/or lines) or a lateral water hazard (red stakes and/or lines), the player may play a ball from as near as possible to where the original was last played (Rule 26-1a), or drop a ball behind the hazard keeping the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard between himself and the hole (Rule 26-1b). Under this option, the player must drop the ball behind the water hazard (see Decision 26-1/1.5). Decision 26-1/15 illustrates the options under this Rule.

In fact Rory was not allowed to drop on the other side, since it was yellow stakes. With yellow stakes you have to drop at the point of entry, never the other side. www.randa.org/RulesEquipment/Rules/QuickGuide/Relief-Situations-and-Procedures/Water-Hazards

Sorry Mark you are wrong on the rules. With stakes and in absence of a line, the stakes define the water hazard. Easy enough to look up on the R&A website. It doesn't matter if they mowed the area down or not. If the mowed are is behind the stakes it's in the hazard.

In regards to the rules question on hole #16 I think that Mark got it wrong. Rule 26-1 states that regular water hazards (aka Yellow Stakes) only offers the players two options: a) stroke & distance, or b) drop behind the hazard inline with the flag as far back as the player likes. Only lateral water hazards (aka Red Stakes) offers two additional options: c) drop within 2 club lengths, no near the hole from the point of entry, and d) drop on the opposite site of the hazard from where the ball entered no near the hole.

i’m shocked that pros don’t know most basic of rules. Coach is right. Only yellow stakes option is line of sight no closer to hole, meaning other side of a yellow hazard line (or line between stakes). Even more shocked that USGA/R&A didn’t simplify 2019 rules to eliminate difference between kind of hazards (and make out of bounds same option as hazard)

Two club length rule applies only to RED stakes. And, of course, this is ONLY an conversation. 🤣 The folks I play with play foot-loose-and-fancy-free with rules like this all the time. Yellow stakes should probably be abolished, and they should ALL be red. #SimplifyTheGoddamRules

Smart solution m8 with only red stakes. Someone please in the RuleElite watching this channel, do something about it. Too many hobbygolfers who even have played for years struggle with all the differant drop (rules) possibilities. red stakes = drop 2 clublenghts on either side of hazard no closer to the flag. Yellow stakes = paint them red;)

Correct. Yellow stakes you must keep the point of entry in line with the hole. Even if the ball landed on the side of the green and rolled in, keeping point of entry in line with the flagstick leaves no place you COULD drop it on the side where the green is.

This can only be done with strokeplay. In matchplay you need to come to a decision as it can influence the outcome of the match.
@petteremberson
@petteremberson 6 жыл бұрын
can be done in both stroke and match play. it can affect the hole in match play and it can affect your score in stroke play. hence why I put 'ask the pro of the course'
@BlueIced256
@BlueIced256 6 жыл бұрын
Well, the reason it cannot be done in matchplay is because you need to know the result at the end of playing the hole. In matchplay you play for the and directly against your opponent. E.g. if you leave a hole undecided, how can you tell if you won 2&1 or that you are just 1 up and need to play the last hole. So the outcome might be A/S. This one undecided hole has a huge influence on which strategy both players will have on the following holes. In strokeplay it is a completely different story. There you play against the course and you count the number of strokes, which has to be correct before you sign the card.
@petteremberson
@petteremberson 6 жыл бұрын
at anytime you can play 2 balls, then ask the pro. don't the tour pro's have a rules person with them when playing matchplay?. if uncertain what the ruling is and getting it wrong then you can be both agreeing to waiver/exclude the rules then your both disqualified.
@BlueIced256
@BlueIced256 6 жыл бұрын
That's actually not completely true... During matchplay, you can ask for an official to look at the situation. But if there's none available, the rules say that you and your opponent should come to a decision based on your best knowledge of the rules. I know it is a bit tricky, because it leaves room for cheating. But golf is a gentleman's game. And in matchplay you are not allowed to play the hole with 2 balls. That would give you an advantage over your opponent. E.g. when it comes to testing the green. I wouldn't advise you to do this, when you are playing against someone who knows the rules well. He will protest and after the match go to the competition committee to get you DQ'ed.
