I've been smoking a pipe for roughly a year now and just discovered your channel. I love your videos! You remind me of my dad a bit. My dad used to smoke a pipe regularly but gave it up when I was a teenager. Last year, he gave me a couple of his old pipes and two cans of Captain Black, the regular and a can of Gold. Both were canned in 1992. The cans were 30 years old, but they aged extremely well. I just finished the regular and opened the Gold yesterday. It smells and tastes like bourbon. I will miss it when it's gone. There's something special about opening a can so old. Thank you for sharing this and all of your videos.

Oh that is so awesome. I like the sharing we do here in the YTPC. Makes this more of a world wide family. Really enjoyed watching you open and smoke this 20 year old tobacco. One day i wanna try a 100 year old tobacco. The oldest tobacco i ever smoked was 45 year old Amphora. Wow i didn't like the taste. It tasted nutty and with a hint of roses. But it is incredibly interesting to taste the past as a matter of speaking. Now i know i'm more aromatic smoker. And i like Velvet. So i wil search for a tin of old tobacco from the 1920's. Kinda hard to find on a budged. Greetings,, Kitty.

Maybe it's me being strange, but when at home, if I have 'flake' that I am preparing to smoke, I take my good old fashioned 'marlin spike' (pocket knife) and slowly cut it like you would plug. I think it's that I have smoked aromatics so long (which most are ribbon), that it's just natural to load my bowl with ribbon...so, my brain stops and says 'nope, all must be ribbon, that goes in the bowl'... And, if it's too dry...I'll throw a new (old) can or pouch into the old jar humidor/humidifier and bring it up to 70-75% (day or two), before I smoke it...brings back a LOT of the original flavors that way.

The ketchup smell of McClelland's is a secret that keeps mold from growing on the tobacco. I smoked a 20 year old tin this year and was not impressed with the flavor improving and if anything, I felt the blend had lost the fullness of flavor I recalled when smoking it first in 1999. What I liked most about this blend was the orange Virginia which is something that one does not often find in blends.

Question Muttnchop - I open a can of tobacco, peel the metal tin seal off, have one smoke from it, place back the plastic lid, place back in sealed tub in cellar and walk away. Same or not the same as unopened metal seal?
@MuttnchopPiper6 жыл бұрын
Matt Seimears - Not the same, the tin is vacuumed sealed allowing only the oxygen left inside. this oxygen reacts with the tobacco to ferment, but it’s not like alcohol fermentation, this kind of fermentation allows the tobacco flavors to mix and deepen the all around flavor. Once you open the tin the oxygen is constantly replaced and fermentation never occurs, unless you put it in an air tight jar preventing the oxygen from constantly replacing itself, then the fermentation can begin again. Putting it in a plastic tub does nothing but dry out the tobacco. 👍👍👍
@mattseimears66306 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much (new at this and love your tips). When you buy a new can, break the seal of the new can, and place the plastic lid back on for later use, what is the timetable here before it changes? How long will it last or should I transfer to a Mason jar or plastic bag? Is there a better advantage here?
@MuttnchopPiper6 жыл бұрын
Matt Seimears - Ok, it all depends on how much of this tobacco you plan on smoking and how fast, if you smoke 3 to 4 bowls a day until the tobacco is gone, then no, the tobacco will not dry out before you smoke it up, but if you only smoke a bowl of this tobacco once or twice a week then yes transfer the tobacco to a mason jar, it will stay fresher longer. 👍👍👍

Thank you very much. Moved to jars. Do you have a video on - Should I have one pipe for all Tobaccos.... or one pipe per Tobacco?

Joe Q Public - Yes it is, and the last there will ever be since McClelland has closed their doors, so this one will be smoked only on Thanksgiving day until it is gone. 👍👍👍

I have seen hand grinders (they look like a large pill box with teeth on the inside)...would you ever use those to prep your tobacco for smoking, or would they grind the tobacco too much?
