Considering the extremely disproportionate gender ratio in canon (G1 had something like... 5 or 6 femme robots total? and the femmes showed up so very briefly that only two of them had personalities) it was pretty clear a long time ago that there'd be mostly homosexuality in the fanworks. Elita One and Arcee alone cannot cover the needs. Assuming that homosexuality is the norm on Cybertron is just easier. The IDW comics a few years ago had closer to equal gender ratio (towards the end at least), but they compensated by going hard on canon homosexual relationships and also all the femmes as trans actually, because in Arcee's spotlight comic Simon Furman (very overrated and apparently insecure writer) had decided that all the Cybertronians should be male and Arcee was a freak disfigured and unnaturally gendered by evil science. So later some actually good writers decided "no actually, Cybertron has a lot of colonies and *those* Cybertronians came into contact with aliens that have different genders so a lot of them transitioned to have pronouns and new names and some had top surgery. Homosexuality is still norm among the robots, here's some lesbians. Arcee can have a girlfriend too, and we're giving her personality and history a little more depth."
