@@BFVK "just a few tanks" You mean, the highest concentration of russian troops in the entire war until then? A diversion with your main force and your best troops. Includimg sending VDV on aeromobile missions to secure bridgeheads (you don't intent on securing?) with a one way ticket? A "diversion" that causes you to not have enough troops elsewhere, so that even your most successfull fronts are stalling under heavy losses for weeks in Mykolaiv and Donetsk areas? If you think this was a diversion... You must think of Putin as even more ruthless towards his own troops and more incompetent in terms of strategy than i do. They tried to take Kyiv in a coup de mains, but that didn't work. Then they tried encircling and besieging it. Didn't work. And then they cut their losses and abandoned the attempt. That they decided to cut their losses and refocus on smaller scale goals in Donbas is the smartest decision they have made in all of the war. And you try to not even grant them that to statisfy your petulent desire to be right.

That tanker helmet is known as a “Танковый шлем” or simply “Shlemofon” and it is exactly as you have described it. It is simply a padded fur hat with integrated radios that protects the wearers head from the hard surfaces in the crew compartment when they are bouncing around in the tank. That one is probably a TSh-4. It is a very common piece of equipment used by nations who still use Soviet equipment. Funnily enough the Russians have been parading around a new crew helmet but I’ve yet to see one show up in Ukraine. Western armies on the other hand adopted specially designed helmets in the 60s with integrated communications called “CVCH” which stands for “Combat Vehicle Crewman Helmet.” EDIT: Thanks to the folks who corrected me. CVCHs are in fact not bulletproof.

Apperantly one of the reasons why the Russian military are using so much outdated crap is due to corruption. The entire military structure are essentially a kleptocracy. So they design new impressive stuff but the funding to actually field that gear gets stolen on the way.

@cracklingvoice2 жыл бұрын
Former US Army here. CVCs aren't bulletproof. The shell might glance off a bullet if struck at an odd angle, but it is mostly there to protect one's head while inside the vehicle. The most common thing to happen inside an armored vehicle is hitting your head, from stuff like going over a bump or ditch in the road. Bashing your knee or elbow isn't fun, but the Army really doesn't like people hitting their heads. You don't always need an arm or leg, but every soldier needs their head.
@barrag34632 жыл бұрын
depends on which CVC but in general they are spall proof but not bullet proof. Making them bulletproof would be both expensive and redundant, since the tank crews should be protected from bullets unless something has gone very wrong (like being ambushed while outside of the tank). It is meant to stop shrapnel from post-penetration spalling to some extent, which is more meant to allow the crew a higher chance of evacuating (if a mobility kill was not achieved) or bailing out successfully after being hit. Still better than a TSh which isn't even spall proof.

In the US army tankers wear the ACVC or Advanced Combat Vehicle Crewman Helmet. It is similar to the Russian one in some ways with built in communications but is a hard shell like an infantry helmet and has some fragmentation protection. It is still mostly meant to stop you from hitting your head on a part of the tank and getting hurt though not combat.

The Irish suffered for their right to survive just like Ukraine does now. You don’t need to be a fool to see what is happening in Ukraine is inherently wrong. Our National story is quite similar to Ukraine only one was 100 years ago before the international system and laws, therefore the crimes committed against the Irish went unpunished. Ukraine has the entire world behind them and I’m sure they will be successful.

Any idea what sort of plugs the Russian tank helmets use? I have an old East German NVA/DDR 1960s Tank helmet and it's basically a 5 pin style thing, I guess two pins for the headphones, two for the throat mics and one as a ground or similar. I'm just guessing in about 60 years the Russians didn't change the tech at all.
@flitsertheo2 жыл бұрын
60 years ? I think they were wearing those already in WW2, and probably before too. Though not all tanks had radio's back then.
@barrag34632 жыл бұрын
@@flitsertheo the ones in WWII didn't have the headsets for intercoms yet, and had 3 combs on them. the headsets came with the 4m I believe, which had 4 combs on top and 4 pin plug
@alaingadbois22762 жыл бұрын
I gave a helmet from the eighties and it has the five pin connector.
@MisterW0lfe2 жыл бұрын
almost all military comms gear is the 5-pin type, easier to replace the plugs and wires, 2 wires for input, 2 wires for output, and if the fifth pin IS actually wired (most often times not) it is a ground.
@GypsyPirate2 жыл бұрын
What plugs? The only plugs that work in Russian tanks are the vodka bottle plugs, and even those unreliably. My old man was born in the USSR and served in the "mighty" Soviet army in 1985-86, in Georgia. He says the intercoms never worked well. He was a commander on a T-62, the one with a loader. So, when my dad needed to give orders to the driver, he would slap the gunner's shoulders, who sat literally between his knees. And the gunner would kick on the back of the driver's compartment to signal go/stop/left/right directions. And it wasn't some boondocks tank battalion -- they were defending the border with Turkey.
