I'm a high school choir teacher and for the past 4 years this video has been hands down my favorite tool to use to teach the order of sharps - thank you SO much.

I’m currently learning key signatures and major scales in my online music 101 class and I completely didn’t understand the way my professor was teaching it but this cleared it all up so thank you!

Great info. What about the system for finding the sharps in major sharp keys, like D#, A#, or G#?

I find the order of flats helpful for memorization... BEAD GCF ... bead God Can Free works for me right now.

The way I remember my order of sharps is BEAD is spelt backwards then just add F C G at the beginning :-)

wraith507 Yeah, "FCGDAEB" just does not sound catchy on its own! Ha ha. :) Thanks for this suggestion!

Key of F Major has 1 sharp, 0 flats. Designating semitones as “sharp” or “flat” assumes its primary note exists in that Key. Ask yourself, what is this tone flat against? If you say B, well... There is no B in Key of F; therefore, to call the black piano key “B flat” is null bc you are stating that it is flat against something that simply does not exist in the Key of F (B). What is correct is to designate it as A sharp bc A does exist in Key of F and A serves as a reference tone for a sharp (or a flat). The tone is pitched one half step higher than A which makes it consistent with the term, “sharp.” You may also designate it as a Cbb or the rare G###; however, since A is next closest piano key and frequency, we name it as A#. You may wish to disagree and that is your right of course, it’s a free country after all. However, the beauty of science and logic is that it’s correct whether people wish to believe it or not. Thank you for a wonderful video that really made me think especially having just started piano just 7 days ago. ✋🤠🤚
