With some very small exceptions, but yeah. Like, for example, I don't know if Honedge ever actually came from something that died, but it's still a ghost type. edit: Well shucks, nevermind. Honedge is a spirit inhabiting a sword. edit 2: However, Misdreavus and Mismagius have no reference to being formerly alive in their Pokédex entries. They may still be ghosts, but perhaps that's all they ever were.

Gengar used to be human, however, your theory is half correct. Gengar means "Doppleganger", and Gengar are the Doppelganger of Clefairy, not Clefable. Clefairy's Shadow is its twin, or Doppelganger, or "GENGAR", naming it the Shadow Pokémon. Your words are perfect to attract comments though, kudos! 😅

While that does make sense, in the games, ghastly were juat dead pokemon in general. I infact one specifically turned out to he a dead cubone. So maybe the design was models similarly to clefable but gengars are not necessarily dead cefables, but they also can be as well.
