6:45 - Fun fact : Greco-Roman was invented by Jean Exbrayat , a former Napoleonic Soldier, with the name *Flat Hand Wrestling* ==> As a matter of fact, it's was called _French Wrestling_ And also, in French Boxing, we also use *Parisian Wrestling* : that is freestyle/Greco throws & takedown to slam the opponent to the ground.

One of the best, most concise, and informative histories of the Gold Dust Trio and the origin of modern pro wrestling. Except for one thing... Stecher (or Stetcher) is pronounced "Stecker".

Just discovered your channel via some wrestling history searches. I listen to all the Cornette podcasts. His Drive-Thru USED to be all about fan questions & we’d learn a lot. But, they’ve fallen off, with that, in place of reviewing modern shows. There’s soooo many between WWE & AEW alone, that’s basically all they DO now. But, that being said…LOVING your channel. I love learning pro wrestling history. There’s just SO many interesting figures in soooo many interesting happening, occurrences, & stories. Thank you, good sir!

Lou Thesz has his book on Amazon/Kindle. Its amazing how a lot of those 100 year old catch wrestling books still have useful information. A lot you can just download. But what kind of MMA do you expect to learn from a 100 year old book? Ed "Strangler" Lewis went blind towards the end of his life. His eyes were infected from a dirty mat. He taught Lou Thesz everything he knew. Lou Thesz came from this era, where shooting was dying and working was becoming a thing. I recommend his book.

What do I think? I think you found your new gimmick! In the words of Biff Tannen: You know your history. Very good. And truth be told, back in the late 20s/early 30s, my great-grandfather was a shooter (up here in the Dakotas). He used to let guys challenge him, going bar to bar, to make money. Few generations later, I trained under Severn, idolized Thesz, and became an indy guy - wanting to pursue submission grappling (til my health tanked). It's funny how the past can have such a profound effect on 1 person, or an entire industry.

Also interesting their effects on the shoot side because a few years later catch wrestling was on the verge of being banned due to a few instances of combatants being killed during a catch wrestling match (or some rumors stay that boxing promoters of the time fabricated or caused the death through paid off refs to give catch wrestling a bad rap so boxing could take over) so they pretty much saved catch wrestling by going into a work.

@@DaveKnowsWrestling too true, too true. I’m always looking for matches from the past, the older the better, and am always amazed at how the craft has evolved. All the innovation and “less is more” in-ring action just really appeals to me. Just wish more survived or was recorded to begin with. What I wouldn’t give to see a prime Hackenschmidt or Gotch match as it happened.

1:50 the crazy part about those 30-some odd losses is that it would have been less if he didn’t intentionally do the job to maintain fan interest. Ed was legitimately one of the three baddest men in wrestling history; Frank Gotch, Ed Lewis, Lou Thesz. Those are the three pure shooter American world heavyweight champions.

Okay, that was impressive research, and impressive showmanship. Good pacing, but... But you can't just tell us that they pushed mid-card guys with personality, and not name names or at least give us a taste of the wild stories long forgotten. This would become an important part of wrestling's mainstream success - every promotion that ever succeeded, had to make you care passionately about fights that'd never get anywhere near the gold. And this is information that's really hard to come by. Most histories I've read start with: "And then one day, Gorgeous George invented the modern heel, out of nowhere." And with some digging, you can find the first foreign monster heel. And that's about it.

Dave, I've been watching some of the early WCW shows that were produced by Crockett Promotions. There was a guy that was tag team partners with Rick Rude called tge Raging Bull Manny Fernandez.
