The Origin of Whirling Dervishes | KONYA, TURKEY

Rumi, the famous 13th century Sufi, mystic, poet and philosopher lived in Konya and it's where his tomb rests til this day in the Mevlana Museum. The whirling dervishes also known as Mevlevi originated in Konya because of Rumi so we travelled all the way to Konya to watch their mesmerizing performance at the cultural center.

Another thing that originates from Konya is etli ekmek. A must-try in Konya since it's the local specialty. On our way to the Kyoto Japanese Park we stopped off at Şelale Etli Ekmek. Friendly team and tasty food, located conveniently right next to the tram stop too.

It was a surprise to know there's a Kyoto Japanese Park in Konya but it's a lovely and serene garden to visit. There's also a restaurant there too that provides excellent views of the park.

On the way over to Aziziye Mosque we passed by a Turkish ice cream shop. It seemed like a popular ice cream stand as there were plenty of locals lining up too.

Aziziye Mosque is an Ottoman mosque in Konya. It's well-known for its unique Ottoman and baroque architecture with columned balconies on its minarets - an architectural feature rarely seen in Turkish mosques.

Alaaddin Hill Park is another great spot to enjoy some peace and greenery. It's a large park containing the historic Alaeddin mosque, some remains of a citadel and other historic buildings.

Peter's tone and speech from the first vlog I watched back in May 2020, had something special, "peace"🧘‍♂. Rum's teachings and the likes 🙏🏻. The dance🌀, when Yen explained, it likens how I have told my Boss recently, I have been caught up in a materialistic whirlpool since graduation chasing money and after 2 months in NZ (recently), told myself, time to pull the plug, else I will drown. Both, I have been more peaceful at work and at home and I realise, I do not need to be on holiday or WFNZ to be at peace. But hell, Joyce and I have booked our tickets✈ to go South Island for Feb 2023, like both of you, being at peace does not mean no fun yeah Thank you both for the last 2.5 years. Have a great week !!

Quit with no job to go to after despite the uncertainty but knew that it was just better that way and when I was ready I'd go back again, look for something new and work towards our goal once again 🙏 just gotta have faith in yourself too and be kind to yourself while of course being sensible 🙂 perspective in life makes all the difference and understanding that everything is temporary no matter how permanent it might feel at the time. Hahaha we've actually avoided these ice cream stands in Istanbul and Cappadocia but then this one did look different because of so many locals going to it plus it being right outside that shop (when normally it's just a small stand often on its own) so had to try it and get teased at least once while in Turkey 😂😂😂 normally would want my food straight away too 🤣 it didn't even help that I knew to expect the teasing!! Just couldn't react fast enough to grab that cone 🍦😂😂😂

I can tell it was super tasty… Peter’s reaction seemed like it was absolutely one of the tastiest things he’s eaten in Turkey. Highlight of the vid for me😁😁. I’m sure you guys have heard.. Japan (as well as Taiwan and Hong Kong) is opening up next month… and guess what 😉😉😉? So sad that restaurant in the park didn’t serve ramen… could hear the anticipation turn to noodle deprivation despair as Yen flipped through the menu…🥹🥹. Konya is actually known as one of the more conservative areas in Turkey but it is also a very big city and understandably since it's a pilgrimage site in the center where Rumi's tomb is it's more so there. He really really enjoyed that durum 😆 yes we heard! So you'll be going to Japan huh? Exciting!! Are you gonna attempt walking the country there too? 😳 Hahaha yes at that point the cravings were definitely starting to kick in 😆 Staying in NZ for the next couple months at least! Peter just had his nose surgery on Friday. All went well and he's recovering well. I've been looking after 2 big babies this weekend between him and parent's dog hehe 😆 Hope you're doing well! 🙏🙏 When are you headed off?

He's doing well thank you! 🙂 Sounded like the surgery went well even though it ran overtime but his recovery seems good 👍 he had septoplasty with turbinoplasty (basically correcting his deviated septum). It'll be great when he can breathe fully normal again and through both nostrils! Excited for you to go to Japan! And rural Japan will be really cool.. do you think you'll be filming and sharing your journey too? ☺️🤞

Ah yeah wow, I love international gardens and heck have to visit Hamilton Gardens here as it's been ages since I have been there! That looks like a wonderful building and the cultural centre is also magnificent! Hmmm yeah international music is also so great, so much variety and great performance! You guys provided lots of cool information on that music! Yeah I feel like a good feed and it's well into the AM hours as I watch this! Haha! Always your good food! Yeah love those international gardens! Oh gosh and ice cream too! Some amazing architecture! Once again a wonderful job on this video!

Oh amazing! Love the Mackenzie region. Lake Tekapo is gorgeous.. especially if you get good sunny, still weather! Lake Pukaki is really pretty too. Hope you'll get to catch the lupins! @@PeterandYen It was perfect weather for our trip to the Mackenzie region, cloudless days and no wind. Went for a quick run up Mt John, amazing 360°views in shorts & tee shirt weather. No Lupins though unfortunately, good excuse to go back! Yes felt the quake, no damage fortunately, we're still getting over the flood from August so definitely don't need anymore drama!

Kyoto was the former capital of Japanese people. Konya was capital of Turks too as Peter says. Maybe thats why they are partner cities.

I was there for the whole year till August 2022. I was born in Konya at the end of 70's. They did a really good job advancing the city last 20 years also the whole country. If WW3 does not break out soon I can picture Turkiye as the new destination for The new era American dream for immigrants. If you end up in Konya I will list the places to see for you. 1-Mevalana Museum ( centrally located) 2- Kadinlar Pazari ( Women's Bazaar) 7 minute walk to the Mevlana Museum 3- Aziziye Cami ( Mosque from 1800's) 1 min walk to Kadinlar Pazari 4- Hungry yet? Sendagli ( they make a turkish style closed pizza I would name) attached to Kadinlar Pazari ask for Yag somonu. they got afew kinds but i recomment Atom ( means Nuke in Turkish LOL) you will thank me! 5- Bedesten ( Old style Bazaar where you will find anything from dresses to hardware) this place is 2 min walk to Mevlana Museum. 6- Alaeddin Tepesi ( A hill you can see right across from Mevlana Museum. Also it is a huge roundabout. 7- Kultur Park ( Culture Park) the other side of the Alaeddin Hill. 8- Haci Veiszade Mosque ( the mosque attached to the far end of Culture Park) 9- Kule Site ( A shopping mall where the round highrise is) you can take the tram at Culture Park and get off after 2 tops called Kule stop. 10- Butterfly Garden- ( mama mia santa maria ) i mean you ll love this place. you will see beautiful butterflies flying around u. inside is really humid and hot so be prepared to take off some layers. 11- 40 gunde devri alem ( around the world in 40 days) miniatures of world'd famous structures, disney characters. even Taj Mahal . 12- Science Center- I dont know why Fauci ouchi guy came up to my mind saying this lol. 13- Nenehatun Park ( 5 min to Kule where my mom lives lol) it is a nice small park where you can sit and enjoy a coffee.

Could you tell me please as a local to the Konya, how do the locals heat their places during the winter, is it a centralized heating system? How is the city supplied by the clean water, is water supply considered sufficient? How do you cook, using a natural gas or electricity?

@@ruabossy4700 heating is usually central powered by natural gas, also cooking stove is natural gas so u dont have to deal with propane tanks. If u wish a electrical stove u can put one yourself. Water everywhere is clean u can drink it safely. There are also water fountains on the streets placed by the city. Public washrooms everywhere and free.

@@ruabossy4700 all homes have furnices that runs with natural gas and u get hot water at all times. Some people use solar power heaters and they are very efficient.

Hahaha we actually lose a lot of weight whenever we travel because we end up walking soo much and especially on the days we're out and about vlogging! 😆 Come back to NZ and we get to drive everywhere and sit at the computer longer as we edit videos 😆 and if we're eating with our parents they'll try fatten us up with food all the time 🤣❤️
