@@clarencetse uh pretty sure this is a Southeast Asian representation film (confirmed by Disney already, not the representation part, but they've confirmed it is a SOUTH EAST ASIAN film)- Southeast Asia is a region that's been colonised by many countries in the past and have been influence by other countries, Vietnam having been colonised by China for 1000 years, the Philippines by the Spanish for around 400 years, and other countries adopted Indian cultural aspects but made them their own. That's why you see some other influence- but don't let that deceive you! It's distinctively Southeast Asian, from the characters to the landscape, from tools to cities.

I'm Indonesian and I watched this movie without any expectation. As I only watched the trailer once. But I was surprised to see many references to wayang kulit, keris and javanese look especially in the beginning of the movie. I watched the movie with 6 yr old son and he loved it (and also the song).. While watching, I explained to him references of the architecture, food and the floating market. He was so excited to come back to Indonesia once this whole covid thing over (as currently we live abroad). And now he can't stop talking about being asian. All in all, I'm glad this movie came out at the right time. I'm glad I watched it with my son.

ASEAN love to criticized instead of helping.. last time only Malaysia - Indonesia - Philippines - Singapore who raised concern over Myanmar issues & condemn the military.. then what Myanmar neighbours do? Thailand is just border by land with Myanmar, all the do is keep silent because they are kinda 'similar'.. Vietnam is considered as huge power in SEA Mainland, i don't see they do something for Myanmar.. Cambodia seems not interested with any problem that happened in ASEAN, they only care about Thailand claims & cultures.. all i can say, Maritime Southeast Asia were braver than Mainland..

In Bahasa Indonesia "Raya" means The Great or Big. If you add affix on "Raya" it will become "Perayaan" which means Celebration. In Indonesia we call Great Britain with "Britania Raya" & Indonesia National Anthem is "Indonesia Raya" Raya's sword is Keris, traditional dagger from Indonesia. But in Raya it looks much bigger. It more similar to Naga Puspa Sword (literally means dragon flower sword) that appears in indonesia's historycal soap-opera with the same title. I think Kumandra isnt fully fictional world. I think it inspired from term of "Nusantara" where lot of nations in Southeast Asia once lived together as one in harmony & peace. You can read History about Sriwijaya & Majapahit kingdom.

South East Asia today is not the same as it was 1000 years ago. There is a large Chinese expat population in Southeast Asia and China has been expanding south for many years. So the looks aren't as distinct today as they used to be. But also, there have been a lot of similarities across Asian cultures as they are all part of an Asian cultural sphere. The issue is that a lot of those cultural elements, such as martial arts, get identified exclusively as Chinese. There were also Asian dragons in other cultures outside of China as well, but again the ones in China are the most well known and famous.

Personally I think the South East Asian influence in this film is made up largely by Thai culture, with bits of Laotian/Cambodian/ Javanese tucked in some scenes. Only reference to Vietnamese culture is how Raya called her father by the word “Ba”, which is used mainly in Central/Southern Vietnam Anyway you can’t expect to put in every cultural details of like 10 countries into a 100 minute Disney movie

after I watched the movie with my family my mom talked a lot about diversity but we were mainly hooked on brave and strong women in Disney and we noticed that only the non-european princess were strong :/ just something to think about

Iunno, I thought Elsa and Anna were pretty strong. But if you define strength only on "fighting ability" and fighting ability only on physical strength then that's pretty much internalized misogyny, right there. But such rigidity isn't necessarily part of other cultures.

I'm from Vietnam so i'm really proud to be a part of the film ^^. Btw, Raya was made so good. She's so gorgeous. Her skin is so beautiful, which it changes my mind of doing brightening thing. After watching the film, i realized how beautiful my skin is. Besides, her martial art moves are rock!!!!!!

As someone from the Northern Philippines, I think Moana is more related to our culture than Raya although there are lot also in this movie😅 But in Moana it relates me more with the islands' coconuts, farm animals, symbolic tattoos, Igorot clothing, voyagers, like of singing, the mythologies, characters having beautifully brown too, shapely bodies with curly hair and cute little noses, among others. Unlike here in Raya which mostly relates to Indic culture of the mainland southeast asia with a bit of maritime southeast asian culture.

@@omnisciencexx790 You're right but I am also right. Read this: The Austronesian Migration Theory: propounds on the expansion of a group of people called the Austronesians from ASIA into the PACIFIC by means of Taiwan 6,000 years ago.
