Thank you for the video. I learned some things here. I only watched the first movie all the way through and I remember being pretty scared but the climax was worth the torture maybe.

It! The Terror From Beyond Space is pretty much the blueprint for Alien.

I'd like to remind everyone of who it was that introduced the presence of the ordinary person with an ordinary life and ordinary concerns into genre fiction in the early 70's: Stephen King. He was the one who brought genre fiction down from its highflown/unserious position and placed it in the mainstream. He did it with horror, but his influence soon bled into other genres. Alien would not have existed had it not been for his stories, which convinced readers and audiences that "fantasy" could be about people just like themselves, that horror could happen to truck drivers and farmers could battle space aliens. Books don't occupy the same place now that they did in the 70's, when a novelist could literally change the culture by writing horror stories, and change cinema by having those stories adapted into films, but believe me, King was a cultural phenomenon in that decade. His presence changed _everything._ He prepped us for stories like this, which would have seemed ludicrous if we hadn't already spent time on the page with Jack Torrance and Stu Redman and Johnny Smith. Once we'd seen sad little Carrie White destroy her entire town with nothing more than her bitter and vengeful thoughts, we were ready to watch a group of grimy truckers battle a terror from beyond the stars.

The original Alien is the best, with the fourth one coming in a close second because of its mythic themes. (The callback to Somerset Maugham's "The Magician" is especially horrifying.) I've always hated Cameron's sequel, as it completely betrayed everything the orignal was about, turning into a yaya actionfest and making the xenomorph's threat into nothing more than a monster-of-the-week to be blown apart by brainless gun nuts. No mystery, no tension, no suspense, no thank you, no way.

Anyone who thinks the original is not the bes6t is objectively wrong. Sure, Aliens is good (none of the others are, fun or not), but it's a fun action flick, shallow and silly, none of the depth and horror of the original. Very much Jaime Camarão, far more action and visuals than substance, like all his movies, except for Terminator.

@@alexandresobreiramartins9461 I’ve actually run into people who will argue (adamantly) than Alien 3 is the best one and having finally watched the whole thing, I just don’t see it. I can respect Aliens for what it did (and for its phenomenal effects), but I’ll never enjoy it more than the og.
