I got to see and talk to most all the top bluegrass bands in the 70's - 80's . The Country Gentlemen in my opinion was the very best.

Negative. Bill Emerson & Bill Yates were original banjo & bass players. They founded the group with Duffy & Waller July 4, 1957 in D.C.

@@fergusonto-2032 John Duffy passed on Dec 10, 1996. The bluegrass band The Country Gentleman was a band that originally formed in Washington, DC. I remember when I was a just a kid. My dad took my brother and I to the small town of Fincastle, Va a few miles north of Roanoke, Va to a Bluegrass Festival on a farm called Cantrell’s Farm. It was Labor Day, 1965 and the festival was the first of its kind to be held in the country. I remember going up on their bus for a jam session. My dad was asked to play with them on their bus before going on stage and the music should have been recorded for an album. Dad played a Martin D-28 guitar and his voice was like Lester Flatt. Flatt and Scruggs. Ralph and Carter Stanley. Don Reno and Red Smiley. The Carter Family and many more. Look here on KZbin for a Bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Va. in 1965, 1966, and 1967. It will bring you to the festival that was held there. It was the beginning of many bluegrass bands creating their own festivals. I remember being there so very long ago. The music was better than anything being recorded or played now.

@@fergusonto-2032 No, John Duffy passed away Dec.11, 1996. Nearly 18 years ago. I have a lot of there vinyl LP’s on Rebel records. I was always partial to Eddie Adcock on 5- string. First meet the original group in Fincastle, Va. Labor Day weekend in 1965 at a bluegrass festival at a place called Cantrell’s farm. YT has the event. Look up bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Va in 1965, 66, 67. Every bluegrass musician that was there my dad knew. Some of the best music played was on their buses before going on stage.

@@slowpoke7759 that’s awesome , I had an Uncle , Leroy Canter , who was an awesome fiddle player , he used to go to a lot of fiddlers conventions in his younger days , he rarely came home w/ less than a blue ribbon , he got saved in the early 70’s and I don’t think he played any conventions after that , he just played locally , in church & occasionally at my house but anyway thanks for the info. Mr Duffy was one of my favorites .

No, he's right. Emerson and Lahey were first. Lahey didn't last long. He was soon replaced by Jim Cox. Tom Gray came after Jim Cox. Emerson was replaced by Pete Kuykendall. Adcock came along after him, in '59 I believe. People incorrectly label this lineup the original Country Gents. They are certainly the classic early lineup but not quite orginal. Having said that, they are my favorite BG band of all time.

Also, Emerson came back for a longer stint after Adcock left for good. That was when they had Doyle Lawson and Bill Yates in the band as well, in the early 70s.

I think by "original"people mean this is the first lineup that stayed together for a substantial length of time. The earlier configurations were when the founding of the band was still unsettled. After all thiey group literally came about by accident-the car crash that injured Buzz Busby and other members of his band which included some future CG members.
