I can't wait to see what people manage to do with Mickey and Minnie Mouse once 2024 begins.

I like the way you began this video because it's true! Mickey and Minnie Mouse will belong to you, me and everyone else, not just Disney starting in 2024. Even though Disney will still have their trademarks and we can only use the original Mickey and Minnie Mouse, this is still a huge deal and a pretty significant and symbolic milestone for the copyright community.

This only applies to Steamboat Willie. Mickey himself is still under trademark protection.

True, but the Supreme Court has made it clear in the past that trademarks can't be used to stop what copyright does. In other words, as long as people create versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse that are too distinct from Disney, then they can be used.

And then there's Tigger, who will also enter the public domain next year, which will be great as it's one thing for Pooh not to wear a red shirt, but you can't have Winnie The Pooh without Tigger. I'm glad we'll be able to use and include him too in any future Winnie The Pooh works.

It’s only a matter of time before there’s a Steamboat Willie horror parody.

Even though this is will be another year away, I'm also looking forward to when Popeye The Sailorman and Tintin join the public domain in 2025. That just goes to show that as exciting as the public domain will be in 2024, things will only continue to get more exciting as every year going forward, more notable and interesting works and characters will lose their copyrights as well!

We're also getting the first 100% talkie film The Lights Of New York in 2024, which is another one of the gems included in this coming year's treasure trove of new public domain works.

Micky Mouse is still trademarked which essentially means other companies can't use him ever as long as the trademark is in effect.

Don't get me started on all the 1923 sound recordings that are entering the public domain next year too. That's awesome! I just wonder if there are any notable Christmas or Halloween sound recordings from that year I should know about.

Looks like the mouse is about to get the same treatment that Winnie the Pooh and The Grinch received. His own crappy horror movie.

Blumhouse is going to have a field day with this one.

I think it started with the remake of the Lion King but yes.

@@foxesofautumn I meant in terms of symbology, they loosing mickey mouse is the final nail in the coffin... Those other movies was just one of several nails of the coffin... After that it's not really a matter of if they will die, but more like when they will die as the coffin has already been made for them.

Once it hits public domain it can never be private again?

Just about.

There's One Way or a Couple of Ways Companies have done that by dabbling in Trademark Law Warfare in regards to Zorro, John Carter (i Think), and Sherlock Holmes to the bitter end when his last 5 Stories became Public Domain. And the 'It's a Wonderful Life' Re-Copyrighting on the Grounds of It's Musical Score is Still Copyrighted making it Re-Copyrighted on flimsy grounds.
