This is not just an ode to pizza, but an ode to a way of running businesses that's dying out. Seeing all these places run by siblings who have inherited it from older generations is just beautiful. I used to work in a bookshop run by three sisters, the third generation of the family. The family had been selling books in the city for over a century. It closed down back in 2018, and two of the three main bookshops in town are big chains. The old unit is still empty, and anytime I pass by it breaks my heart a little.

These businesses thrived in areas that are middle to high density, with mixed-use zoning. How the grid layout cities were built before WW2 ended. Basically, suburban sprawl and Euclidian zoning killed off mom and pop businesses, because only malls and big box stores can survive in that sort of environment.

I love this show. I’ve watched it many times. My 9 year old daughter and I have watched this at midnight when she couldn’t sleep and she came down stairs. We were craving pizza so hard that I made some make shift pizza with bagels, spaghetti sauce and cheese just to satiate that craving. It will forever be a moment in time that we will both cherish. The production is top notch but Frank Pinello is what makes this show such a gem. He is so genuine and knowledgeable that you can’t help but be enthralled by the journey. Thank you for all that had a hand in making this.

Guy made a good point at 19:04 People think we live better now, but actually back in the 1950s, the average blue collar worker could pay out a brand new house with two years of work. Nowadays, even white collar people need to pay off their student loans first before even starting to think about a house.

I live in Finland and I got to experience NYC at the age of 18 last summer, still feeling very blessed about that, and I have to say it was just different man. The hot summer nights, the restaurants and the little shops.. it's not like it was even any hotter over there than it is here when it's summer, or that the food was even that different from what I can get over here, but it was an experience. I still can't get over it, like when I bought a slice of pizza and a dr. pepper it was just DIFFERENT. NYC was another world man. This video almost got me crying all of a sudden. ♥️

I'm half Polish, quarter Italian, quarter German, but I was primarily raised by my mother's side of the family which is pure Italian. Grew up around the cuisine, the language, all of it, and I gotta say, I feel the love in this video. That's what so many people these days don't understand, the value that's placed on family and community with these people, it's irreplaceable. Everyone is genuine and passionate about the food they make and the people they make happy in the process, and you can feel (and taste) it.

@KalOrtPor
@KalOrtPor 4 жыл бұрын
@@vanmoody No joke, the Lombardi's outpost in Philadelphia closed so it could move, but it was blocked by the state and they cited the owner's ties to Brescio who was recognized as a mafia capo. Of course he said he knew nothing about it, but the fact he also claimed to know nothing of Brescio's ties sounds suspect. With the regulators saying there was overwhelming evidence of trafficking and criminal activity at every turn involving them and that the storefront was a means of gaining a foothold in PA, it's really tough to doubt it.

This is my favorite episode I've seen so far. Great characters and history. Also as a native Brooklynite who grew up eating pizza I recognized and have eaten at most of these pizzerias or ones like them. I'm lactose intolerant now and watching my weight so I don't eat pizza much but I really enjoy making it and the occasional fresh slice. I like to visit a great pizzeria once a year and stuff myself and feel sick afterward! My favorites are of the old original Lombardi's lineage, in particular Juliana's which is the same pizzeria under the Brooklyn Bridge that opened as Patsy's, when that brand was sold to become a chain they became Grimaldi's, when that brand was sold to become a chain they became Juliana's. Located in the original location halfway down the block from the big corner Grimaldi's seen in the video. They were my favorite growing up and remain so. Their pepperoni is what I strive for. So I loved this episode. I'm not as in touch with the newer pizzerias as I was when I was a kid and made pizza pilgrimages out to the best NYC pizzerias. Now that I've started making great pizza at home I'm going to have to start visiting great pizzerias again.
