This is not just an ode to pizza, but an ode to a way of running businesses that's dying out. Seeing all these places run by siblings who have inherited it from older generations is just beautiful. I used to work in a bookshop run by three sisters, the third generation of the family. The family had been selling books in the city for over a century. It closed down back in 2018, and two of the three main bookshops in town are big chains. The old unit is still empty, and anytime I pass by it breaks my heart a little.

These businesses thrived in areas that are middle to high density, with mixed-use zoning. How the grid layout cities were built before WW2 ended. Basically, suburban sprawl and Euclidian zoning killed off mom and pop businesses, because only malls and big box stores can survive in that sort of environment.

I am so glad I grew up in Jersey and NYC, I have so many great memories having a slice of pizza with a grape soda in a hot summer night. Don't forget a lemon or cherry italian ice. The energy of the city is just amazing, something that the rest of the country would never understand unless you grew up here. My spot is Luigi's Pizza in Brooklyn, hands down.

I visited a friend a while back and he took me to Luigi's. Everyone was super friendly and I got a fresh mozzarella slice, best pizza I've ever had. Four years later, I haven't found anything that good. I still dream about that slice, man. Makes me sad to live on the west coast.

This is my favorite episode I've seen so far. Great characters and history. Also as a native Brooklynite who grew up eating pizza I recognized and have eaten at most of these pizzerias or ones like them. I'm lactose intolerant now and watching my weight so I don't eat pizza much but I really enjoy making it and the occasional fresh slice. I like to visit a great pizzeria once a year and stuff myself and feel sick afterward! My favorites are of the old original Lombardi's lineage, in particular Juliana's which is the same pizzeria under the Brooklyn Bridge that opened as Patsy's, when that brand was sold to become a chain they became Grimaldi's, when that brand was sold to become a chain they became Juliana's. Located in the original location halfway down the block from the big corner Grimaldi's seen in the video. They were my favorite growing up and remain so. Their pepperoni is what I strive for. So I loved this episode. I'm not as in touch with the newer pizzerias as I was when I was a kid and made pizza pilgrimages out to the best NYC pizzerias. Now that I've started making great pizza at home I'm going to have to start visiting great pizzerias again.

So loved this. I lived in New York in the late 90s for just over a year. John's and Joe's were musts. As was Lombardi's. Went to Coney Island many times, and I think Tonnino's and Joe's in the West Village had the crunchiest crusts. All of the pizza joints featured here are truly outstanding. If I had to pick one I'd go with Joe's.
