The 420hc knife has proved it's self for decades and helped us survive for a long time. My 110 holds an edge better than any D2 and Aus 10s. It's just proof that modern isn't always necessary. You want sharp? Custom factory 110. Time splitter.
@Jarrych837 сағат бұрын
I have a buck woodsman and freaking love it. Mine's just the black with 420hc and I can use it for all of my car and tent camping tasks and non-woodsplitting tasks. It's obviously too small for that. I'll use it for a 2-3 night trip and it's still more than sharp enough to open mail and do regular home tasks for a few weeks before it needs a meaningful touch up. I do think the guard is less of a problem making kindling with smaller knives in the line and it's a shape that works pretty phenomenally for a lot of food prep tasks as well.

I think you summed up buck pretty well. They don’t have great fit and finish and are old designs but they work and come with a proper heat treat. I have a 110 in magnacut and it’s a fun knife to beat up

The true shine of a buck is 1- hunting, and 2- the custom shop. But much to Martin's dismay, I used the custom shop to make a 113 skinning knife recently in.....420hc. Specifically so I could easily restore the edge in the field with simple sharpening tools. But you can add magnacut to most of their custom shop knives now

You forgot the fun-factor! After using it in the kitchen I bring it to the table, using it with the fork. Our children or guests look at me like an old weirdo. Or bring it to a BBQ, hits the eyes! Slack review of a knife fallen out of time!
@hardcorehunter716210 сағат бұрын
buck are more a hunting knife than a bushcraft knife. The 119 and smaller knives have a bit more ease of use than the 120. Can be a pain if you've ever tried doing small game or fish with a 120 or reaching into a deer with a knife about as long as the deer is wide.

I thought for sure S35VN had higher edge retention and lower toughness than 3V, but the chart does show 3V even better at edge retention. Makes me feel like I don't "need" to get any S35VN blade now. Until I rust out a 3V blade.

I had one of those about 40 years ago. Great for big game skinning chores, but little else. I have no idea what steel it was, but it was hard and brittle; the edge and point would chip or snap with moderate stress. Glad to see they have better steel, but the blade geometry still narrows its potential for a variety of uses....

They're not really Bushcraft knives. Buck knives are more for hunting like skinning, deboning and processing meat or in the case of the 119 or 120 finishing off a game kill. Plus when you are in the field you want a knife that is easy to sharpen, not a super steel and lightweight which means no full tang.

I hate buck knives from a design standpoint, but I do have to give them props for their 1095 knives being heat treated perfectly and in general they're really high quality... Ugly af tho...
@adamjames13758 сағат бұрын
What do they have in 1095? I'm pretty familiar with buck and I'm unaware of any models in 1095. They have a "Camp Compadre" fixed blade in 5160... And to my knowledge are currently manufacturing production knives in - 420hc -D2 -s30v & s35vn ... Also, the 119 is widely recognized as one of the most attractive production fixed blades ever, as are the many other 1xx series models, including the 120. I'd argue classic aesthetics is a large factor in their sales.
@xanoks111625 минут бұрын
