I think you've neglected a pretty major part of the magic of Spyro, which is its overall presentation. Spyro, especially the first spyro, did everything that it could to mask traditional game elements. Most other games have a health bar on the HUD, which is an ever present reminder of the fact that you're playing a video game whenever you get hurt. Spyro doesn't, he has Sparx, a character in the game who's his best friend and also reminds you of its physical, living presence by doing his little buzz when he collects gems. Not to mention he's a conduit for all of the game mechanics you unlock in 3 like Fast Travel, Extra HP, and Gem Finding. Your menu in the second 2 games wasn't just a generic barebones GUI pause menu, it was a full Guidebook and Atlas, which showed you pictures of the Locales and felt like an actual guide to your journey that would be housed in a book. Even the collectibles were tangible things that tied into the greater narrative and not just McGuffins (well maybe the Orbs a little, but they gave them actual lore). In some other games like Crash, Sonic, or some Mario titles, levels are just places following a theme. But in Spyro, they're named locations with their own denizens, worldbuilding, and relation to the world, and all of the Denizens are fully voiced, which is something that no other platformer of the time had managed to accomplish. Additionally, you don't simply go to a map and hit 1-1, you physically locate and fly through the gateway that takes you there. And there's not a loading screen in sight, it's all masked behind flying from point A to B. The Dragon Statues Cracking open in Spyro 1 were also sneaky loading screens for the cutscenes. And even though there's minigames, you have an NPC explaining the situation and need for the minigame in a way that ties back to the level story or full story in a believable way. The magic of Spyro comes from the level of Immersion and suspension of disbelief that it brings to the table. A lot of its mechanics, GUI and formula were all artfully crafted setpieces for an immersive experience, and I think that the artful OST which you do mention helps to tie all of those elements together.

Honestly, Sypro YOTD is one of my favorite games of all time, nothing can replicate the feeling that you get whilst playing it, not even the other 2 original trilogy games, though that might just be down to nostalgia playing a massive factor with Spyro YOTD for me. You can replay it time after time and never get bored, the soundtrack as well is amazing, and the levels are like nothing else in any other game; not even the Reignited Trilogy could replicate the magic of YOTD (Not saying Reignited was bad, it just isn't as good as the OG 3).

Same! I'm sure it came through in the video, but YOTD is by far our favorite of the three. Spyro the Dragon crawled so Ripto's Rage could walk, and Ripto's Rage walked so YOTD could run lol

Spyro: Year of the Dragon is Spyro at its most properly realised, and is the only one I found fun to play. There's a lot wrong with 1 & 2 when it comes to basic fundamentals and design (redundant collectables for example), and 3 streamlined it all to offer an intuitive, challenging and satisfying collectathon-action-adventure. Definitely up there with some of the best of the time, such as Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, and Toy Story 2.

I legit love a lot of what Toys for Bob did with the Reignited Trilogy (I honestly think they did a much better job with it than Vicarious Visions did with Crash N. Sane lol), but yeah it was never gonna be able to replace the originals. Like, those PS1 classics are finished creative statements with lots of historical value; not only are they nostalgic & just plain fun to play but they give us a window into how 1990s Insomniac wanted to express themselves and how they did so through the limitations of the PS1. Like, we basically get to experience the nearly unfiltered creative vision of that particular group of people at that particular time & that's legitimately a big part of the classics' magicalness. Nice work with this video, I'm glad I stumbled upon it.

I can't thank you enough for emphasizing the music. I know most people play games for the gameplay above everything else, but for me, the music of a game is like, 75% of the reason why I play them. Video game music is all I listen to, and it's been that way ever since I played Spyro 3, my first ever video game. The first game's soundtrack is quite literally, my favorite video game soundtrack of all time (yes, better than 2 and Year of the Dragon). The bass, percussion, guitar riffs, it's all so IMPACTFUL and AWESOME and AMAZING, I can't help but blast it's music every chance I get. It has literally stood the test of time, and the same can be said for the trilogy's music as a whole. I just love it, man.

When Comrade Spyro liberated the Dragon Egg from that bourgeois parasite Moneybags and the Bailey Gang of working class heroes finally got their hands on him in the epilogue (a scene cut from Reignited, by the way), I had to put down my DualShock, wipe a tear from my eye, and sing a verse of L'Internationale. I remember getting Year of the Dragon as a kid for the PS1. Played it, finished it, loved it; then one day, my PS1 stopped working, my mom took it to a place to get it fixed, around a week or so after I got my PS1 back, but it had Spyro 1 inside 🤩 I didn't know about prequels back then, I was so happy to discover other Spyro games existed. I had a whole new game to play and explore and I loved every single minute of it. I never knew if it was a gift, or if I just got someone else's PS1. I now own the Reignited Trilogy on the switch, good times.

I 100% agree with you on the music aspect of Spyro. I've played these games since I was a kid and have always thought the music was top-tier compared to many other games. That being said, I listen to the music (through gameplay) to study, and so far it hasn't failed me yet! The other thing that really makes Spyro feel magical is the fact that for its time it felt huge and that for a ps1 game, there was a lot to explore. You didn't feel constricted while playing it. I think that, and of course, the beautiful scenery also really helped. The fact that the games were made so quickly and that people still love them today says a lot.

"Ice level, desert level" This themeing, or pocket worlds is exactly why I was drawn to Spyro and always love games that have different zones/areas. My fave is usually ice/snow, but I adore Cloud Spires and Aquaria Towers too and design wise, Skelos Badlands is so incredibly well done, from the skybox, music, themeing and stuff you could do there. A big draw of Spyro for me was this type of thing. Didn't have to have cool ones like Robotica Farms or fireworks factory. I just love games with pocket worlds. I want to theme my house in a similar way, like have an ancient Egyptian themed place (tastefully, not gaudy or garish, but like, there is a theme there) and space, comfort room etc. Another game of my childhood was the 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue and that also had many many pocket worlds too. I dunno if others would think it's good, but I have very fond memories of it. I loved the Underground, Royal Museum, Spooky Forest and I will fight anyone who says the Toy Factory song isn't an absolute bop. Just looked it up. That game was also made by Toys for Bob, haha! Oh and "Spyro's Bad Day" animation perfectly encapsulates what you were talking about with how much our short king does and that he totally deserves a vacation. I say "oh-kay" on the regular now.

This was one of the best retrospectives I've seen on the original 3 games from the Spyro trilogy yet (and I've been on a binge lately trust me) The jokes actually got me to chuckle out loud and not just forcfully breathe though my nose, the visuals were spot on and witty much like the dragon of the hour himself, and somehow you managed to put into words the feeling I've had for these games since childhood till now. This 22 minute experience was truly something else. I haven't bonded with a person's opinion like this in a very long time. Something that I think helps the Spyro trilogy is the unique level designs. At the time of its release the big 3D platformers were Mario 64 and Crash. Spyro takes a different approach from either of those series with how it designs its levels. Mario and Banjo both had open worlds that were fun to explore, but not as much fun to just play through. Crash had very linear levels that were fun and challenging but left little to no room for exploration. Spyro hit such a good balance between the two styles that made his levels fun to play through and explore. They were laid out in a linear fashion but had many nooks and side paths that made poking into every corner along the way entertaining. I really hope that Spyro 4 doesn't try to make everything so big and open just because most modern games are. I hope they realize that Spyro's unique level structure is a big part of why it stands out.

Really nice video! The Spyro trilogy on PS1 made me daydream so much when I was a child. I remember when I reached Midnight Mountain on YotD and I wasted hours of my life trying to get on the "impossible tower" (the one with 3 butterflies), only to understand later that I needed to cheat with GameShark codes or something to reach it. Spyro Reignited Trilogy managed to make that small island possible to reach post game. Or in Spyro 1 in haunted towers, where I could hear an elder dragon shaking in its crystal form, but I couldn't find him. It took me years to understand I needed to do a complex supercharge path to get to it!

Great video, I have Spyro OST as part of my every day playlist :) Speaking of Reignited Trilogy, I feel like a little correction is in order - it's not a "Remaster" in a technical sense. Remasters usually grab the same game, same files, same engine, etc and most of the time redraw textures, sometimes they may remake models, sometimes they can rewrite some part of the engine to inject some modern graphics features and effects into it. Most of the time it's done without changing anything about the original core of the game. Remakes are usually made from the ground up, new engine, new models, textures, even adjusted gameplay. Spyro is somewhere in between. From the high-level view - it may seem like a remaster, because they kept everything as close to the original as they physically could. But from a technical standpoint it is a complete remake. They did not use any code from the original game, any assets, etc, everything was recreated from scratch. AFAIK they did not even have access to the original source of the game, I remember some talks about how they had to reverse engineer a lot of the stuff, and extract level geometry from the original game to make sure everything remains where it should be. I just think that calling it a 'remaster' does not really do justice to the humongous amount of work done to make this new vision of Spyro.

I'm glad you mentioned the music because it really is the icing on top of the cake. The other thing which when you're kids you don't really appreciate is how well made the games are, at a time when 3d platform games were still quite clunky and camera controls were clunky Spyro was one of the best around. I still maintain to this day that I haven't played a game since that had swimming controls as good as in Spyro 2 and 3

Wonderful video!! Loved every bit of it. Spyro is my absolute favorite game from my childhood. I beat all 3. I do agree that the music is next level and the games just feel truly magical. I am on the same boat as you and feel like the original trilogy goofyness beats the new trilogy, it's just not the same feel. Love this, thanks for sharing.. I agree with everything you said :)

12th subscriber, I think this video was recommended to me since I’ve been re-watching the recent Spyro video from Caddicarus (we’ve been waiting for his Spyro videos for years) P.s plz do the same for the crash trilogy Also the end part where you would pretend you’re dragons at school then go home & draw your own dragons was super wholesome, I did something similar with coming up with new Pokémon/yugioh monsters back in the day

Big fan of you being our 12th subscriber. We didn't play the Crash trilogy as much as the Spyro trilogy, but a video definitely isn't off the table! And I love to hear that! For all the flak video games get for keeping kids indoors, they sure do stoke the imagination as well!

What a great video! You are spot on when it comes to the music. I listen to the OG trilogy when I'm driving and I feel like it heightens the sense of adventure every single time. I feel like I'm on a funky quest just driving to the grocery store. Also, while I appreciate the existence of the Reignited Trilogy, I have only been able to watch videos of the gameplay because I'm just too attached to the original games. From what I've seen, they just lack the attitude and style of the originals, and the sound effects are just not the same. Still, I feel like they've done a good job introducing the franchise to a new gen and hopefully this means more Spyro games in the future. P.S. - I highly recommend anyone reading this to dig deeper into Stewart Copeland's music. You will hear Spyro-esque melodies (and even some that are directly taken from the games) in his solo music (for TV, film, etc.), his pseudonym Klark Kent, Gizmodrome, Oysterhead, Animal Logic, etc. The man is a musical genius.

I loved how you talked about the reignited trilogy at the end of the video. Personally I think the first game is better in reignited than on PS1 because of how they added skill points and also fast travel to any level. Plus I love what they did with all the dragons you rescue in the game. They all just look so incredible I think. There was so much work and effort that went into making them I think. Especially Nestor, the first dragon you ever rescue in the Artisans homeworld. Especially how in the initial reveal trailer, the placeholder design looked questionable at best. 2 and 3 however, definitely best to stick to the PS1 versions if possible, but I love how certain characters react to Spyro’s flame like Elora and Hunter. Especially Moneybags and how different it is to Ripto’s Rage and Year of the Dragon. In particular the latter game when you roast him. He definitely deserved it! The sort of character you love to hate on am I right?

Huge, gigantic fan of the first two games. Exploring the worlds as a kid was so enchanting, and the games still hold up. I still boot up Spyro 2 to herd those little turtle guys lol. Big ups to the devs for letting us flame Moneybags, a true win for the working class.

I've never had somebody think exactly like I do and just listen to them say everything in the exact way I feel about it. I found this video in the first place because I wanted to hear the Spyro 3 main menu theme. Hunter's new voice is not as good and the monks' "wyaiyaiyaohm" is waaAAAY better than the new sound. I like that when you pause the game though, the music gets muffled so it sounds like you're hearing music from far away/through a wall. and of course, being able to use the right stick to look around is great. Thank you.

For me the magic lies in the gameplay alone as games like this and crash bandicoot got me into platform/collect-o-thon titles growing up. However, a BIG part of what I believe makes Spyro magical is the music. Stewart Copeland definitely has a signature sound and by the time Year of the Dragon was complete, he had already accumulated such a spectacular signature sound and track list for the games : )

incredible video... one thing id like to note about the music that set Spryo 2 apart from 1 and 3, was the idea of Soundscapes for the Homeworlds. Summer Forest, Autumn Springs, Winter Tundra. The Soundscapes instead of music created such an ambient experience. The remakes amplify that experience because the soundscapes were catered to the scenery.. and the bright and vibrant upgrades just made it breathtaking. Also: wow. a new channel? really good first video. I gotta subscribe if you're gonna keep making content like this

Great first video, loved the editing, made the jokes punchier. I remember obsessing with with series as a kid and I agree that the lines in the original go-around is much more charming than the Reignited. I'll still play the Reignited version more, but I do miss the intentionally bad/weird voice reads. RIP Juliet's voice

As subscriber 99 I've gotta say this was some good shit for a 1st try. Only issue was I felt like you could've split the video talking about the 3 games separately, as stuff kind of got mish-mashed at weird times flow-wise. Then again, this WAS just a general overview of the trilogy itself so that couldn't really be helped. Still, looking forward to what you'll make in the future!
