As someone who is very familiar with the history of the House of Wettin (I'm from Saxony, so it's part of my local history), I appreciate that you covered a part of it in this video. I think it deserves to be noticed more. Everyone talks about the Habsburgs and the Hohenzollerns, but the House of Wettin was also quite important in european history. Just a small correction: The name is pronounced "WettIHN", with a long i and the emphasis on the second syllable. It's an understandable error, since this is a regional pecularity in eastern and northeastern Germany, where many placenames originate in the old slavic language. Many Germans from other regions also get this wrong. Another example for this is the "-ow" ending which is normally pronounced as "off" in German (like in russian names as an equivalent to the english "ov"), but in this regional placename context only signifies a long O. So "Wittow" is pronounced "Wittoh" and not "Wittoff". (Also, Gotha is pronounced "Gota", the H is silent, since there is no english th in German)

The Swedish (I think?) accent can be annoying since you expect the German names to be pronounced correctly, but no such luck :P

Absolutely, it was very interesting to learn more about them. I was aware of the German pronunciation of "Wettin" (although I didn't know that it was regional), but I thought I'd say it in a way that sounds more natural in English, kind of like Berlinn instead of Berliin. I admit that I'm pretty inconsistent with my pronunciations though, so I'm sorry if that's a bit annoying. 😅

Fascinating to hear about the Wettin side for once, I had assumed you were going to talk about the Guelphs and the House of Hanover. @florian8599 Жыл бұрын
Well, but only because George I was the eldest son of Sophia of Hanover, the eldest daughter of James' VI eldest daughter Elizabeth Stuart and Elector Palatinate (in exile) Frederick V AKA The Winter King of Bohemia. And was not Catholic. Fun fact: Sophia's sister, Louise Hollandine of the Palatinate, was a skilled painter and engraver. And became a nun (later abbess) in France after her conversion to Catholicism. Sophia and Louise were also aunts of Liselotte of the Palatinate, who married Louis XIV brother, Philippe Duke of Orleans. After Liselottes brother, the Elector Palatine Charles II, died without issue and the Electorate fell to the Catholic (since 1615) Neuburg line of the Palatine Wittelsbachs, Louis XIV used that as pretext for the Nine Years War.

That was a very interesting and detailed history of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha family, which married into the existing British royal family, but you omitted to mention that the royal family, the Windsors, are actually descended from the Stuarts, namely via the line of Elisabeth Stuart. She was the daughter of James 1 of England (James V of Scotland), Elisabeth Stuart married Friedrich V of the Palatinate. He was one of the Electors of the Holy Roman Emperor and resided in Heidelberg. After his brief and ill-fated reign as King of Bohemia (where he inadvertently helped start the devastating 30 Years War), the family fled to Holland. The son of Elisabeth's youngest daughter Sophie was the Elector of Hannover and became George I of Great Britain. Elisabeth Stuart is therefore the founder of the lineage of our current British monarchs. You might say that the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha family were just a bunch of fortune-seeking upstarts who were successful in marrying above their station. 🙂

@Ella Lee Well, that touched a nerve lol. Of course Catholics were excluded from the line of succession. That was done by the Act of Settlement, but the very same act settled the succession on the offspring of the Electress Sophia. Be aware of the history: Elizabeth Stewart's (she who married the Palatinate Elector) youngest daughter, Sophia of Hanover, in 1658 married Ernest Augustus, the future Elector of Hanover. The Electress Sophia became the nearest Protestant relative to the English and Irish crowns (later British crown). Under the English Act of Settlement, the succession was settled by Parliament on Sophia and her issue, so that all monarchs of Great Britain from George I are descendants of Elizabeth. There is therefore a direct blood line (and a protestant one at that) from James I (James Stewart) of GB down to the current holder of the GB throne. The only reason that the GB family name was changed from House of Hannover (the one via which the Stewart blood line was passed on) to the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, was because Queen Victoria took the family name of her husband. In 2013 when the 400th anniversary of the wedding of Elizabeth Stuart to the Palatinate Elector was celebrated, Queen Elizabeth II sent a congratulatory letter to the organizers in recognition of the blood line.

Tsar means King in this instance. The monarch was styled as His Majesty, not His Imperial Majesty. So different title, but same rank.

Has Britain ever had an English dynasty? The Normans were descendants of the Vikings. The Plantagenets were French. The Tudors were Welch. The Stuarts were Scottish. The Hanoverians and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha's were German.

When in actuality their real name is Mountbatten - Saxe Coburg Gotha. I was today year's old when I found out about all of this as a late teen in the 90s; and I'm not even British. I just found it so tricky that they got away with changing their name, so as to make the British public forget that they are mostly German. Princess Diana's family, the Spencers, are just one of a couple of examples of British noble families which have way more claim to the British throne than this family will ever have. But people enjoy the fakery and the puppetry show, so let them have their bread and games.

this is interesting but it misses the point. you totally skip over the connection between the british royal house and the german house of Saxe Cobug Gotha - namely the Hannovers who themselves were connected to the English Royal House through James I of scotland and England, by means of which conection was the real and only reason ( excepting that they were protestant) that the hannovers received the crown in 1714 after the stuart line went extinct except for catholics which were ruled out.. The British house may have much german blood but they are all directly descended from William the Conqueror r 1066-1087. indeed they are ALL descended (Edward IV onward) from Katherine Swynford, 3rd wife of john of gaunt missing this you will forget that there is a huge difference between ethnicity and family. I am of anglo scots descent but my brother married a maori woman in thios my country NZ. so though i am anglo scots my neices and nephews are able to be counted as NZ Maori - the same family but a different ethnicity. and that is my point. so the house of wettin, which married into the british royla house is really a side show. to a history buff like me an interesting side show but still only a side show
@pratikmaitra653 Жыл бұрын
The royal houses are all connected to each other. If we go by matrilineal descent nearly all royal houses are interlinked and can be traced back to Charlemagne. Traditionally patrilineal descent determined inheritance and claims to the royal throne. It also determined the naming of the royal houses.

Millions of ordinary people are now researching their Family Trees c My husband's Tree goes back to John Nixon b. 1570 in St. Mary's Parish , Carlisle. JHe was a paid singer ( a Lay Vicar) in Carlisle cathedral THis continued for 4 more generations. His G.G.G. Grandson moved to West Cumberland He was Church Warden at ST.Mungos Church in Dearham until his death in 1780. The family became Mining Engineers and Coal mine managers for the Christians, The Earls of Lonsdale and the Senhouse family who founded the little town of Maryport about 1760. My father-in-law was a n Engineer in the Merchant Navy but his uncle became a teacher and moved to Liverpool . His 2 sons were very well known Robert Nixon b. 1893 became a Doctor in Tanganika , and his younger brother Graeme ,b. 1895 , became a teacher and taught the Beatles The Liverpool Echo recently published an Article about the Maths Master ( Graeme Nixon) , at Quarry Bank School in Liverpool. frequently having to put John Lennon in detention . When Paul Mccartney was 11 he played 5 instruments in the Christmas Concert in the 1950s . Robert Nixon b. 1893 settled in Southern Rhodesia, and his son , also Robert was an MP in Rhodesia , and was in on the negotiations which led to the setting up of Zimbabwe, Two of my husbands G. Grandfathers set up the Cumberland Miners' Federation , and we have found out a lot about their work in the Durham Miners Museum in Spennymoor County Durham. The family are still very musical , and can still sing. My grandson hopes to join the National Youth Orchestra next year At the moment he is in the woodwind section of the training orchestra.
