A holy river. Little explored and shrouded in myth, it crosses the heart of Mongolia. The Orkhon is the lifeline of the region and its valleys have been a nomadic land since ancient times. Huns and Uyghurs settled here, ancient Turkish tribal chiefs were buried on the banks of the Orkhon and to this day people in the Orkhon Valley live almost exclusively from livestock breeding. It is all the more astonishing that nomadic societies were already building the city of Karabalgas, an early center of the Silk Road trade, in the middle of the central Mongolian grassy steppe. In 1235, Genghis Khan had the Mongol capital built in the Orkhon Valley, a magnificent palace complex with cobbled streets and luxurious reception halls, the prerequisite for the first Mongol state. The Orkhon Valley was the administrative center for an empire that stretched from the Pacific to the Mediterranean.
An international team of scientists is searching for the Great Khan's palace. The first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia was probably built on its ruins in 1586.
