What is also good about this scene is that the joke part is not just there for laughs, it is as the captain said used to try to relax them a little as they are going to a dangerous missions and lot of people who are afraid to do something use humour to calm themselves down as well, which just shows that even the jokes have a valid reason to be there.

"In Purgatory's Shadow" from DS9 was just a pathetic copy of "Shadow Dancing" from Babylon 5. DS9 was just a cheap plagiarized copy of Babylon 5, anyway.

Not gonna lie, I am impressed how they managed not only to sell their discount Star Trek as a parody, just by throwing in few jokes here and there, but also how the characters, script and acting is way better than the actual modern Star Trek. I am way more invested in the horny sentient jelly that mostly exists in the script to make pervy jokes than I am in anybody on Discovery.

The comedy on this show actually doesn't do all that much for me. But it does a really good job of capturing the tone of Star Trek. Orville seems to "get" what Star Trek is about in a way that Discovery just doesn't.

Brendissimo my friend there's a reason why I said McFarland at at the comedy and that was to keep from getting sued by CBS that way they can't sit well it kind of looks like he ripped us off and using are copyrighted characters but we really can't be sure so the lawyers and Seth MacFarlane talked about it I'll certain things need to be added like the comedy Now CBS can't come in with a lawsuit or an injunction to stop him from saying hey man you rip it off I copyright characters. So nobody's holding a shotgun to your head to make you watch this show you're free to use your finger on your remote and watch any other show you want I'm going to finish this show McFarland tried to pitch this idea to CVS but they turned him down Sit no and then turn around and use his concept to create a new Star Trek one is more like a military version of it it goes in with gun blazing I watch the pilot episode of STD and I was not impressed that Chinese actress that can't speak English right so feel free to watch something else in the meantime Seth MacFarlane had to alter his concept of Star Trek keep from getting sued and it works his fans are gaining worldwide deal with it.

the don't walk that extra step into super seriousness. TNG had funny moments too, but they always brought it back to the drama usually by Picard keeping his face and imposing the code of conduct. Orville doesn't.... they just roll with it. AND, they did an amazing job at contrasting that in episode 9, when Kelly is losing it, and it's Ed who calls her to order.
