The Osmonds brothers came before the J5 and had a string of hits. Michael and Donny were good friends. Donny was a bit older than Michael. Both boys had similar high voices. They had a friendly music rivalry going on in the early 70s.

@@jarrettcone8949 This song was Number 1 in 1970, this was made in 1971. The Osmonds been around since 1962, they just weren't all born yet (Donny, Marie, Jimmy). Kind of like when the Bee Gee's started, Andy wasn't around yet. It's still only a handful of years. The Jackson 5 sold over 100 million records, The Osmond's over 77 Million. That's not counting obviously Michaels or Jermaine's solo careers, nor Donny or Marie's solo, etc. Back in the 70's they were both very popular, over the years the Jacksons become more popular, mainly because of Michael and Janet. The Osmonds become "uncool" yet in 88' Donny snuck in a hit "Soldie of Love". Anyways, these families were fans of each other.

The Osmond Brothers were performing as early as 1962. They were regulars as part of the Andy Williams show and Donny was like four years old. While the Jackson 5 were discovered four years later, in 1968. The Osmond’s had hit after hit on the radio compared to the Jackson 5. In the late 60’s and 70’s here in Southern California you’d here everyone on the radio. What made the Osmonds last so long is they evolved with what was being played on the radio. Old Andy Williams performances show them singing barber shop quartet style music. Sadly drugs and the music industry effected the Jackson 5, while the Osmond family were devoted LDS.

It was a time in music history, when dancing, entertaining, & singing all at the same time was normal, especially for boy bands, and for an FYI, both brother groups were friends, and their Managers, had certain songs that would divide between, knowing which voices would perform the best. For me it doesn't matter who or if groups seem similar, as mentioned before, the majority of boy bands were very alike in their delivery of the songs & the way they performed....another fun fact, The Osmonds started performing A Little sooner than the Jackson 5.........

Here's an interesting tidbit I didn't see anyone else mention. Joe Jackson used to force his sons to watch the Osmond when they were on the Andy Williams show. He would say they need to practice as much as they do, and perform as well. And there used to be a thing that made the rounds showing the similarities down to the number of family members, there mom's having the same birthdays and just a whole bunch of weird coincidences

Osmonds were singing back in the 60's on the Andy Williams show. Years before Joe Jackson put his kids on a stage. Joe got the idea to put his kids together in a band when watching the Osmonds on Andy Williams show. Joe then solicited Barry Gordy and Diana Ross to help get the Jackson's some booked gigs on shows like Johnny Carson and American Bandstand to promote their first hit, ABC.

The Osmonds used to sing on the Andy Williams show in the 60s, as a barbershop quartet. When they left the show, they entered into pop music. Mike Curb produced their first album and Mike Curb said they copied the sound of the Jackson 5 on the first record, which was One Bad Apple. In fact, the song One Bad Apple was offered to the Jackson 5 first, and they turned it down, so the Osmonds recorded it instead. Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson had the same high voice. Another funny thing about them was both families had 9 children, and Michael and Donny were both the 7th child who were pushed out in front. The song Ben was written for Donny to sing and he couldn't sing it because he was on tour, so Michael Jackson sung it and it was Michael's first solo #1 hit. But Jackson 5 came out first in pop music in 1969. The Osmonds pop career started around 1971. I think Michael & Donny were around the same age too. One day you should watch Yo Yo by the Osmonds when they're wearing the black Elvis suits.

Joe Jackson saw the Osmonds on either The Ed Sullivan or The Andy William's Show and said, "If those white boys can do that, I know my boys can". The Osmonds started as a barber shop quartet when they were very small, which led to them working at Disney Land and then on the Andy Williams' Show. However, the Jacksons did start recording before the Osmonds. Mike Curb at Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals, AL offered the Jacksons either "ABC" or "One Bad Apple", and they took "ABC". The Osmonds came through shortly after and were offered "One Bad Apple", Also, the fact that they are both 'Brother Bands" who fell into roughly the same age ranges made them very similar. The two groups and families were good friends and did not consider themselves rivals.

Both the Osmonds and the Jackson 5ive had their own Saturday morning animated TV shows. Later, when Donny Osmond was in his late teens, he and his younger sister Marie were given their own variety show (probably inspired by the Sonny and Cher variety show). That's another parallel between the two families, both had the youngest daughter hit it big with a solo career (with Marie, she was the only Osmond daughter, Janet was the youngest of 3 daughters and her older sisters both had a couple of minor hits). The entire Jackson Family had their own short lived variety show too, but I think it was just a summer replacement series. Donny Osmond also sang in Disney's first (animated) version of Mulan where he sang "Make a Man Out of You". He also performed on Broadway as Joseph in one of the many productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Hi! I'm just now seeing this, but just wanted to let ya know there's a very good reason why this particular song brought the J5 to mind. This song was written for the J5, but they turned it down. You're exactly right, it sounds like the J5. Little Donny Osmond and MJ had very similar voices back in the day, and both families' bands were very popular! However, the rest of the Osmonds catalog doesn't sound like the Jacksons, their songs sound like pop songs and as you probably already discovered, they did some experimental rock music too. There's a really cute video of Donny and Michael together when they were little presenting an award together at an awards show. It was adorable! I hope you can react to Donny Osmond when he's all grown up in the 80s, singing 2 of his hits "Sacred Emotion" (my favorite) and "Soldier of Love"!

Both groups died out in late 70’s but then Donny and his sister Maria had a very successful tv show and the Osmond brothers recorded without Donny. The only reason ppl talk about the Jackson 5 today is because Michael Jackson became such a huge solo artist that ppl remember his group from before. The song Ben was originally written for Donny he’s the youngest singer on this video. but he had a conflict and couldn’t do it so they gave it to Michael Jackson. And I believe that this song was recorded at muscle Shoals which the Jackson 5 also used so that could account for some of the similarities. Donny and Marie had a music variety show in the 70s talk show in the 90s and they’ve been doing Vegas for a number of years. Both Donny and Marie have been in Vegas shows. This song was offered to the Jackson 5, but but they declined, and recorded ABC, instead. The Osmonds were around before the Jackson 5.

Actually the Osmonds appeared on Andy Williams show in the early 60s before the J5 and were recognised first and singing as a barbers quartet, but J5 hit the big time more mainstream before the Osmonds, this track was undoubtedly there most famous song along with crazy horses in the mid to late 70s but this group was officially recognised first, but they were never as susseful as the J5 group

Donny had super popular solos in the 70's and a variety show with his sister Marie. Donny kept doing music but was more focused on his family when he got married. Michael J. took the opposite way and focused solely on his career instead of a family and became MJ. They were both extremely talented and I have no doubt that Donny could have been right up there with MJ if he'd wanted to be. Donny loves music and performing but I don't believe he ever really wanted to be a superstar like MJ. He had other priorities that were more important to him.

Totally right. Donny had a healthier physical and mental life. He focused on his own family as well. Priorities are priorities. Poor Michael Jackson. I guess he went through a lot of things, How he changed and transforned himself. Both families were friends. To each their own, the Osmonds and the Jacksons.

Frankly comparing the Osmond Brothers to the Jackson Five is not really fair the Osmond Brothers preformed all types of music while the Jackson’s only did Motown music. I suggest to listen to to their albums Crazy Horses and Phase II. You will see and heard the difference.
