You are absolutely my favorite Tolkienologist. While others seem to just read from the old online Arda encyclopedia, you re-illuminate the works of The Professor and shine light on details missed or forgotten. You not only KNOW the material you seem to truly UNDERSTAND it. Thank you for sharing your vision and also, in this video in particular, thank you for your treatment of Celebrimbor and Boromir. You have a rare talent of bringing out so many minute details of Tolkien’s writing - connecting names, interpretations, events , actions beyond any other channel I’ve come across. It’s almost as if you have cognitive access to the Tolkien Spirit. I can’t imagine how you know the author’s work so intimately! It’s as if you’ve written every single detail of ALL of Tolkien’s works multiple times to have such mastery of content. That mastery combined with your skill at storytelling is entertaining and unique. I am inspired to wish some high level of success for you in reward for all the effort and skill you’ve poured out for us. I'm not sure that Celebrimbor (and the Gwaith-i-Mirdain) intended to defend the 16; in fact, Tolkien states in Letter 131 that "the others (the 16 and possibly lesser rings) they tried to destroy". Presumably with little effect, lacking a friendly dragon or two.

Here is a thought: The Ruling Ring on Sauron's hand is also a great disappointment. This Ring is said to betray all who wield it, and this is seen in Isuldur, Deagol, Gollum, Frodo, and lastly, Gollum for the final time. However, the Ring first cheats Sauron. Sauron not only failed in his objective to control any of the Rings controlled by elves, but they put them away. So even lesser rings are useless to him. In the end, the Ring is taken from his hand in battle, not the first time it will so abandon a master, and passes away from him. Then, no matter how he bends his will to it, the Ring always move aside of his purpose, thus cheating him still. In a final irony, the Ring betrays Gollum, Sauron, and even it's own self by dropping into the chasms of Doom to be unmade. Sauron, in his malice, created an instrument to betray, and ever after, all Sauron's designs go amiss. They may not appear to do so for generations, but when the Dark Lord is a primordial being, centuries are meaningless. So the Ring betrays, as is its very nature, until the very end. Even its resting place is removed as it seems that Mt. Doon appears to tear itself apart in cataclysmic pyrotechnics.

28:00 to 28:20: Funnily enough, in an early version of the _Lord of the Rings_ backstory, after Isildur lost the Ring in the river, a fish swallowed it and went crazy before spitting it out elsewhere where Smeagol eventually found it. So maybe there's a precedent for these Ring-swallowing dragons being affected. I guess Carcharoth is also a precedent.

Celebimbor's death is always particularly brutal to imagine. I am aware that there are many other instances that display the dark lords' malice, but this one hits me hard everytime. I was quite horrified the first time I pictured how he met his end.
@stefanol78144 ай бұрын
Ironically, Celebrimbor's main guilt are the Elven Rings themselves, not having learned and used Sauron's powerful "magic" technique. I fully agree with Michael Martinez's take here: the Three are nothing short of an abomination and a blasphemy against the One, insofar they are aimed at negating the natural course of life in Middle-Earth and Time itself. It's not a coincidence that the Three were wrought in absolute secret and kept secret even afterwards, when they were admittedly unusable due to the overarching influence of the One.
@dlevi674 ай бұрын
That's an interesting (and possible) take. However, I disagree with Martinez, considering what we know of Morgoth's ring. How does Martinez know what the One's initial plan for Ea was, and that it included decay, senescence and fading? It included death for Men, but even so, the early Kings of Númenor demonstrate what 'death' was meant to be, not the scary event that it became thanks to Morgoth's influence. The fact that "things" and beings don't fade in Aman makes me think that _that_ was the original plan, not what we have (and that the Three attempt to preserve). Also, the Three need not have been wrought in absolute secret and kept secret even afterwards - they only needed to be kept secret from Sauron, and in fact for much of the Third Age they were used. It's not by chance that Lothlórien and Rivendell looks the way they do.

@forfun62734 ай бұрын
@@dlevi67Iru tells Melkor that any thought Melkor has comes from within Iru and is his instrument in making something more beautiful than what Melkor tried to destroy. Like Iru knew the whole song. So I believe he knew what Melkor was going to do and wanted him to do it to improve middle earth.
@dlevi674 ай бұрын
@@forfun6273 1) It's Eru Ilúvatar, not Iru Illuvitar. 2) If what you say is true (and Tolkien seems to be relatively undecided, lamenting the widespread corruption across all of Ea due to Morgoth's influence), then more so it is true of anything that one of the Children of Ilúvatar creates... so the Three cannot be considered an abomination or blasphemy. (Incidentally, the dilemma between free will and divine omniscience and omnipotence is a well known theological problem that we are not going to resolve in KZbin comments.)

19:00: It seems that in The History of Galadriel and Celeborn, Sauron was able to find the Nine during the sack of Eregion without Celebrimbor being tortured, and only found the Seven after Celebrimbor revealed their locations under torture. Interesting that there'd be a distinction between Nine and Seven prior to their distribution by Sauron. I'm just referencing Tolkien Gateway for this, though. They do cite The History of Galadriel and Celeborn at least.

From the way the text reads, those initial rings - "essays in the craft" - must still be kicking around somewhere. I wonder if there are any in Michel Delving... or in the Barrow Downs... or troll hoards. I have to wonder if one could be used in the construction of towers like Orthanc, the stone/earthen building that the Ents could hardly damage at all. Perhaps one could be used in sculpting somehow... like the images of Isildur and Anarion near Rarros? Other sculptures? (sorry about my spelling). Maybe on in ship building? I mean... there are just so many crafts that they cannot duplicate. Sure, the magic of middle earth is fading.... and perhaps that contributes to their lack of ability.... but I just wish JRRT wrote more about these things. Like... I'd love to see the epic of the two blue wizards unearthed one day (or written for that universe - they could hold a contest and whoever controls that estate stuff. Maybe one would help you talk to birds or cats or some other animals. I often wondered if Queen Beruthial had one of those lesser rings. It's cool to think about... sad there is no cannonical answer. Thanks for putting this out there.

Great acting. You really knew all these years he was bleeding inside over his friend not being there to be part of the highlights of his life - to share it with a friend so important is more then a friend it is true chosen family. And proof he still talked so warmly and lovingly about him is proved by how overjoyed his wife was to find Elrond walking into their home, while still hurting to bad still because he still loved him as a true brother.

13 comments in the first 17 minutes? You can tell none of us were looking forward to this at all! 😂 I sure do love you for dropping this right at the perfect moment. Although I do have a very minor bone to pick with you. You keep saying "Race" of Elves or "Race" of Men. Given Tolkien's preference for Germanic Anglo-Saxon and his choice of the term "Kin"-Slaying, I suspect the proper term should be "Kindred" rather than "Race." Especially since Race denotes differences within a species. Feel free to ignore this note, though. 😋
@Enerdhil4 ай бұрын
How about the Primates of Elves and Men?😅
@Enerdhil4 ай бұрын
Maybe we should just use the word "species" then. "Kindred" to me feels like there is some relationship between the two species.
@sarahgould54354 ай бұрын
@@Enerdhil That wouldn't work, though, because because two different species can't procreate with each other, yet there are the family lines of the half Elves. Elves *are* related in that they are all of the same kind, so it would be "Elfkind" just as "Mankind" is already another word for humanity as a group. However, "Mankind" is a compound word. If you separate the root words into a phrase, it becomes "Kindred of Man," "Kindred" or "kind" being the type of grouping and "Man" being who or what is included in the group. Those words may have fallen out of this sort of use, but when you grow up with the KJV, "kind" and "Kindred" both get used a lot in reference to genetic groupings, from anything as narrow as a specific clan to as wide as an entire species.
