I had a conversation with a friend about Devil Fruit origins and we came to the conclusion that maybe it isn’t a specific wish to be a jacket but rather over the millennia as our needs evolved along with us so many different people needed a jacket(using the jacket fruit as an example), that the collective desire physically manifested as a fruit

About the Jacket Fruit. I think the Wish what created it was more indirect. The first Brother wished to be more confident, and the elder Brother wanted a stronger Body, cause he was physical weak. So the Jacket Fruit allowes them to overcome there Weaknesses.

Could be as simple as someone desiring a certain body type... 'What would I look like with that body builder's body?' The key word being 'I', since they want to see what they would look like with that body versus turning into that person. Could also be based off the phrase 'Walk a mile in another person's shoes.' A little more abstract, but I could see it. End of the day, the Jacket fruit eater takes control of the person who wears them... that other person's personality and mentality is not a factor. Kelly Funk also said he can control anything that wears him, including animals. So in effect, this comes across as a body image desire without actually transforming into the other person/animal. For example, if his brother Bobby forced a Ox to wear Kelly, does Kelly have to walk on all fours? Or does he just get the strength and toughness of the animal? Puts a new spin on the phrase 'He is as strong as an Ox'. The weird thing is he can not force anyone or anything to wear him, like he can't fling himself at someone and transform into a jacket that wraps around them. It is one of the few devil fruits that needs someone else to manipulate it to be useful. It also needs trust... the person putting on the jacket is effectively helpless. I could also see situations where it would also be a sneaky way of taking hostages to manipulate someone else.. 'You can attack me, but know that your brother is wearing me. If you kill me, you kill them. Am I telling you the truth? Care to find out?'

I think it's quite possible that all DFs are sentient to some extent, it's just that Zoans are more sentient than other types. Maybe the reason the Yami Yami found its way to Thatch first was because it wanted to "test" Teach, to see if he was evil enough to kill his own crewmate and thus be "worthy" of the power of darkness.

I have a feeling The Yami Yami no Mi was in Thatch's hand on purpose to test if Teach would steal the fruit and kill Thatch or not. If Teach decided to let Thatch have it, maybe the fruit might reject Thatch or something might happen to Thatch like he died of poison from the fruit. Now that would shock the Entire Whitebeard Crew but it be interesting twist where Teach seems to be the bad guy but it was the fruit.

The Yami-Yami no Mi was supposedly the most evil Devil Fruit so I could see that instead of directly reincarnating into a person it would reincarnate near them but would put itself in a fruit near a friend. So to test how evil they are, they have to kill their friend to get the fruit or lose the chance.

Oh, I do like that theory as a whole for Bonney. I do not like it for Blackbeard, though, I want the Yami Yami to play a role there, because he waited until getting the Yami Yami to make his move, and he killed Thatch before he ate the fruit. I don't believe anyone in the world wanted the Yami Yami more than Blackbeard, so it would've been much easier to wait for the next battle, like 1 or 2 days tops, and witness how poor Thatch died in his arms after being run through by an enemy who coincidentally used the same type of claws as Blackbeard. Also, it's likely that there are lots of people in the world that wanted Whitebeard's fruit more than him. EDIT: And coming to think of it, they managed to keep the Clear Clear fruit from going straight to Sanji, so the Yami Yami needs to play a role in acquiring these abilities

My guess is that Boney was eating a normal fruit and right before she took a bite the fruit changed into a devil fruit and she took a bite before she could react. Or since she was so sheltered for most of her life she saw it in the kitchen and just thought it was a new kind of fruit she had never had before. This is the version I buy the most, Oda has a tendency to treat things like foregone conclusions these days, like realizing he never revealed the name of Bonney’s fruit. He’s probably treating the way Bonney ate the fruit as not needing a scene because it’s not a mystery, we know she ate it, he’s just skipping to it. Like, we know how she ate it, the same way Luffy did: they’re a glutton and there was food laying around. It’s not the important part. Besides, this is Kuma’s flashback, not Bonney’s. Kuma never saw how she ate that fruit.

I've had a theory for awhile that after you eat a devil fruit, it either replaces or becomes your heart, which is why when Big Mom eats Mother Caramel she got the Soul-Soul Fruit. I've always thought that Blackbeard actually absorbed Whitebeard's heart with the Dark-Dark Fruit before he truly died or before the fruit reincarnated while he was under that sheet. That way he could absorb and have the Quake-Quake Fruit without actually eating it.

My personal theory is that devil fruits evolved through centuries of being eaten. Some fruits have weirdly specific abilities, like the "turn into toy" fruit which has the ability to erase memories as well, for some reason. Maybe the Nika fruit started as the Gum Gum, but because of Joy Boy, it became a Nika fruit.

Will and desire are practically the same word (and for all I know, they may actually BE the same word in Japanese). And "inherited will" is obviously a huge theme of One Piece. Maybe, just maybe, the devil fruits are the incarceration of the desire/will of someone some time long ago and they get continuously "inherited" general after generation by those who eat them... That’s a decent idea, but there are some differences between the two concepts. For example, I “desire” to eat endless bowls of macaroni and cheese at any time I’m in the mood, but I “will” myself to eat other food because otherwise I’d get fat. So in this sense, my “will” is restraining and overriding my “desire”- which sounds a lot like how the will-powered Haki overrides the effects of Devilfruits born from human desire.

For Blackbeard I think the Yami Yami is required for him to grab fruit powers, which is why he wanted it so bad. My idea is that when the fruit power tries to go out to reincarnate he uses the gravity and power nullification to grab the power and put it in someone directly.

That makes more sense to me, since we already have the info that he can pull and nullify devil fruit powers with his fruit. So him being under that cloak meant he was using his fruit to it's full potential and the light wouldn't counteract his fruit.

I don't think it's because of the dark fruit. From what we've seen on Egghead Island, it's been confirmed that devil fruits alter the user on the genetic level. Which is probably why it's considered impossible to have more than one fruit, because the user's body can't handle the complex genetic modifications being done to them. Blackbeard being the only known exception to the rule at the time of writing this. Blackbeard may have desired the fruit because it effectively grants him a basic level of armament haki, but it's probably not the source of his ability to have multiple fruits.

I think what Luffy desired was freedom, which is what the Gomu Gomu no Mi (Nika fruit) embodies, so I think Luffy’s desire may actually have played a role in him receiving it. On another note, consider that Luffy was able to access fire after Ace’s death (Red Hawk, etc.), and Law was able to utilize Corazon’s power after his death (he used his room to cut off all sound around Big Mom). Perhaps these aren’t simple homages, but instead legitimate hints to the nature of Devil Fruits.

I got a theory that all of someone's wishes get put into a fruit. Sugar got a fruit that keeps her young forever so a child could have made that wish or adult who wished to go back to a child. That would make a single fruit Bonney wasn't the first person to wish to be older so the fruit was already in play and probably just found it's way to her. Example is like griffin in berserk using prayers to summon himself but instead it's everyone wishing for a fruit. I mean nika could definitely be that and we know fruits have wills

Sugar's power is more dangerous than anyone thinks, It might also be the desire of "I want to erase everyone's memory" but the side effect is that you are a kid forever and you only turn people to toys. Does that sound like a wish that is granted by Earth? Not really which is probably why the sea will take off the power of the person as it does not really exist On earth or should not exist on Earth. Maybe someone's desire to be something was already something that existed in another universe but yet it is a manipulation to bring it on Earth to defy the Nature's law.

I think it is also possible that some fruits pull people who would want them. For instance, the Meru-Meru Fruit would definitely be wanted by a lot of people, but it set up a situation where the two people in the world who would want it the most - Sabo and Luffy - would pull up to acquire it. Clearly, Luffy couldn't eat it since he already had the Gomu Gomu no Mi, but it was Ace's so he would have wanted it as a keepsake. Same with Sabo. Part of Ace's desire (his Will of Desire) was to protect his brother (Luffy), right, because he couldn't his other brother (Sabo)? That was imparted upon the fruit and drew the two of them into to get it from Doflamingo. Basically, I am theorizing sometimes fruits will manipulate situations to get themselves to those the fruits themselves perceive to be the right owner (Luffy, Bonney, Ace, Tsuru's granddaughter and her Dommy Mommy fruit).

i always thought of the "desire" for the fruits would typically be someone's dying wish, being more like a deal with a devil by bringing the fruit into the world while bonding the soul onto the fruit. idk if oda would go that mystical with it tho but that feels like the most common way of that much desire being present to straight up change reality

Desire, desire is the key word for these devil fruits, it's very possible that some occurances happen where when a devil fruit user dies, it could reincarnate its power into someone with the strongest desire to have that certain power, what blackbeard could've done is known about the devil inside whitebeard, so using a cloak to shroud it with blackbeard could've been the key to show off blackbeards pure desire to obtain the tremor tremor fruit once whitebeard died

It is possible that if you have a high desire for a fruit but not enough for it to physically mainfest into you. Then the fruit will just so happen to eventually end up near you. For example, if you really want to turn into fire and you are the person in the world who wants to turn into fire the most but still not enouugh for it to manifest into. Then maybey. when the user of the fruit dies, one of your buddies will just so happen to find the mera mera no mi and tell you to check it out. Or maybey some random marine will find it in the grand line and take it back to headquarters but will end up in a "convinent" storm and crash at your island. Another sub theory, maybey some people don't speccifically desire the powers of a specific fruit, but they desire the attributes of that said fruit. SO that fruit will try to find its way to that person after the already existing user dies. For example , Alvita, she obviously had no desire to become a smooth person that will bounce off bullets and stuff. But what she may have desired was to be more lean and good looking. Therefore the fruit tried to find its way to her even though she didn't desire for the powers of said fruit but what she will gain from it. Also adding onto that luffies fruit represents freedom. And although luffy might not have even knew it, he wanted devil fruit that would give him the most freedom. The nika nika no mi is probably the most "random bullshit go" fruit in the entire series. so maybey the fruit saw luffy as a good host mixed with the fact of how he wanted to become the freest of the seas. So, he just so happened to be buddies with the person who had that fruit (shanks) and shanks being the mentally disabled person he is. Left the fruit just so happening to lay on the counter. For luffy to eat freely. Also luffies fruit was origally the gum gum fruit until (Im unsure how it become nika-nika fruit because Im not caught up to one piece) but the fruit was origanlly so much weeker because luffy thought that he was a rubber person. Thus, he imagined he was a rubber person and thought he could do nothing else. This adds onto what tneking said that some or maybey even most fruits become more powerful depending on how the user interprets the abbilities or what is told. You could eat a fruit that litterally allows you to do nothing but turn into coffee. But maybey someone will convince you after you eat it that you ate a fruit that turns you into not coffee but oil. If you belive this then your coffee body may become extremely hot and dangerous. Then another person eats the coffee fruit and someone tells them they have the coffee fruit. Thus the coffee fruit becomes ten times weeker than it could have been if you believed it was mroe powerful than it was (This was a really geeky deep dive and im sorry for the length. Im also not caught up to one piece (In skypia) and most of what i came up with is from the wiki and youtube videos so sorry if you can easily disprove this.)

Listening to what Tekking was saying I got an idea. When a devil fruit user dies, the essence | soul | entity | power seeps out and actually travels through some medium to locate a new fruit to inhabit. Now what Blackbeard does, He traps the dying body of the user in his pocket dimension of his Yami Yami no mi long enough to prevent the essence of the fruit from travelling to the outside world. Blackbeard can then contain the essence in the pocket dimension for later distribution or just has a basket of fruit or something in the there to be inhabited. Maybe for Bonney, She being a glutton ate the Age Age fruit among the many other things she had on her plate. It chose to reincarnate into a fruit Bonney was about to eat.

I think the simplest explanation is the correct one. Bonney ate it randomly off screen shortly before the scenes in the chapter. Blackbeard just had a fruit, knew the gura gura no mi would reincarnate into the fruit and ate it. The sentience stuff to me seems more like the zoan fruits bring themselves into positions they want to be in, however that might work. "Controlling their own fate" etc

When you mentioned Totoland, it got me thinking…what are the chances that so many of Big Mom’s kids have food related fruits? Even Oven, he can bake everything Cracker and Katakuri make. Is it possible that Big Mom is a little insane (hunger pangs) because her desires are so strong that they drew all these Devil Fruits to her but also that she’s so greedy that she got the power to, essentially, Force People To Share. So my personal theory is that the individual’s heart becomes the devil fruit after they eat it, and there’s a buffer period before the fruit reincarnates. I think there's some confusion between desiring power or control and desire in general. I think the Hito Hito no Mi: Sungod Nika chose Luffy because of Luffy's innate desire to be the most free. The fruit literally allows him to do whatever he wants. Luffy never desired power or control over anything, other then his own fate and adventure. If you think about it, it makes sense that a lot of fruits align with the desires of their holders, like Doflamingo's desire to manipulate everyone and everything around him, like a puppet master. It allows him to quite literally pull the strings from behind the scenes. It makes sense now how so many character seem to fit their devil fruits, or rather how the fruits fit their personalities. I think paramecia are weird because sometimes people's desires are more.. I dunno, esoteric? They're not a clear-cut concept. Perhaps that's why we see some concepts manifest in weaker and stronger versions. The desire behind the fruits could be very similair. Perhaps something like the Jacket Jacket fruit is born from a desire to control others or to use someone's strength. Or.. to be worn like a jacket, I suppose? The Numa-Numa no Mi (swamp fruit) could be a desire to steal and keep anything your heart desires, the Kira-Kira no mi (diamond fruit) could be the desire to become invulnerable. Also, this entire time we're throwing around the word Desire.. so.. is that.. the will of D? The will of Desire? I, mean it's as good of a candidate for any other "D" word, I guess? This still makes me question how on earth you put a Devil fruit into a object because it doesn't make sense for a object having desire.

An Italian youtube I follow, who seems to get a lot of things right (and has been following since the beginning + really knowledgeable about manga in general), says that it's most likely not about "the meaning" of the D., and that's not even important. Dawn? Desire? Both (or maybe none). Or even D as the smiling face, literally, especially since laughters *literally* power stuff in OP. 100% agree with some desires being more metaphorical (and probably more fruits fitting different kinds of desires, I could see Mingo's fruit used to patch up and fix, but he was the one with an extremely strong desire around, it fitted strings and ended up crossing the fruit's path)

You can actually get pretty deep into the generation of devil fruits. If you go by human desire, you don't really need them to be that specific, you can get into more "visceral desires". Instead of "I really want to control fire/lighting/general logias", it could be a somewhat sadder but realistic cry for help during natural disasters, for instance. That also matches with the weird amount of food related devil fruits, as food scarcity would be a big factor into motivating people into wanting change around them.

Here's a video idea to potentially go along with all these flashbacks we're having in the story. Putting the timeline into context of what things were going on at/around the same time. For example: the same year the Rocks Pirates disbanded(38 years ago), Charlotte Mont-d'Or was born as Big Mom's 30th kid, and the Katakuri and Brûlée flashback of her getting the face scar happened (when they were 10 and 5). Was that incident related to the transition. Would be even more fun to just use the Charlotte family as the timeline, since they had been born so regularly. Show which characters are the same age as which Charlotte, which Charlotte was born when Roger was executed, when Luffy got his hat, when Fisher Tiger was doing his thing, when Doffy completed his orphaning personally. How old was Katakuri when _ happened?

your theory would also explain why most devil fruit (user)-locations fit their surroundings. because you can only desire something you know and you generally desire things you have to do with, so if you live in the sky, you have a lot to do with thunder and you may desire the ability to control thunder. or if you live in a region that has everything to do with food, you may want to control that food you are surrounded with.

I think it's an important distinction between wanting the power of the fruit and having the same dream/desire that originally spawned the fruit. Luffy wasnt dreaming of being a rubber sun god, he dreamed of being the most free. It doesnt count if you want the power itself, its wanting and embodying the original desire, or *Enheriting* the *Will* of the original desire. After all, you can kill a man but his dreams live on. I have a feeling that's what it means to Awaken too, when you perfectly embody the original dream. And as others have said, i dont think those original dreams were as literal as, "i wish i was a jacket" but more general dreams that the "will" of the fruit interpreted as, for example, a jacket

Theory: Devil Fruits were created by the ancient clan from their desires. They most likely gave a wish to a magic tree (maybe Adam Tree?) and the tree gave them back a fruit for whichever power they desired. That’s why we see random ass df like jacket fruit and butter fruit but also sick ones like darkness and gravity. The ancient people got to select whatever they power they wanted, but when they die their powers are reincarnated back into a fruit. This allows those peoples desires to live forever. Or in Blackbeard’s words “People’s Dreams never end!”

Your theory for desire being the key factor to create a devil fruit actually explains the jacket jacket fruit. In a world where so many people grow up in poverty and war torn countries the desire to have a jacket to keep a child or younger sibling warm is a strong enough desire to create a seemingly useless devil fruit.

Tekking, you've gotten so close to a large branching theory that I've built over years, and you've gotten so close to it many times now. Luffy getting the Nika-Nika fruit could've not been him wanting the 'Power of the Sun' but rather his desire to be the free-est man, and thus the fruit tried steering its fate that way. I think All Devil Fruits have some little ability to do so, which is how so many Devil Fruits end up in seemingly the perfect or best host for them. Vegapunk and his Brain Fruit, Law and his Op Op Fruit, an animal getting the Human Fruit, a Marine getting the Buddah Fruit, ect. And I think Oda showed us this in the very beginning of the series! Luffy found the Gomu-Gomu Fruit in a treasure chest. Aren't treasure chests usually locked when they have treasure in them? I dont remember Shank's crew showing off their treasures to the bar-goers. I think the Nika Fruit used some of its light influence to open the chest so Luffy would see and then eat the fruit! It steered its own fate enough to find a suitable user for its powers

Ace Ch.441), he just concentrates the essence at the point he touches. He even explained (at least in German translation) "it also attracts/sucks in devil fruit powers" just before almost breaking ace's neck.

I feel like Vegapunk is sort of an anti-hero. He has good intentions but he cares about himself and his research. He would not pressure Kuma if his offer was rejected but he basically said "I will cure your daughter if you help me make clones of you". He does not really have any allegiances and will side with anyone as long as it means he is saving people (according to him). He is in a race for more knowledge and power. In the worst case scenario, if Vegapunk was not able to cure Bonney, Bonney would die and Kuma would have already participated in the reasearch. Also, I do not know if Vegapunk knew about the rest but later Kuma not only made clones of himself, he became a cyborg and lost his emotions, memory and personality. However, I like the idea that Pacifistas were originally supposed to promote peace and non-violence.

Bro i had the coolest idea about this. So basically i had this head canon that a skypiean kid had a really strong desire to be a great warrior like kalgara. Then that manifests into the hito hito no mi model kalgara and the abilities were based of kalgaras adaptation to new things. This is based of like him warming up to noland and getting rid of old traditions. The base of the ability is adapting and copying both devil fruit and non devil fruit attacks. The second ability was where the world adapted to let the user survive. For instance a fireball is flying at sumone and randomly the wind of the world blows it off trajectory. I just wanted to share this idea i had and finally got the chance.

What shoots the desire theory down is inanimate objects getting fruit powers. Just like they don't explain how a object 'dies' to lose the devil fruit powers. We still don't know how a object can even get a fruit, why I say Blackbeard put the Guro Guro no mi in a ring on his hand. Also, they have stated that you can't have two devil fruits (besides Blackbeard) and that if you eat a second fruit you die... that had to happen at some point to make that a 'fact'. It does seem the fruits tend to go to the people best suited to the fruits. Just like it seems that Devil Fruit users are attracted to each other... because you eat one, you sure do seem to run into other Devil Fruit users all the time.
