I died on an operating table for almost five minutes a few years ago. Since I've came back and a few years later healed up I've had to try and rebuild my life. It caused a lot of stress for me, wondering why I was still here, and how I survived just for things to get harder. I even listened to Stanhope in the ICU when I was conscious and waiting to transfer to general recovery. I remember how much it hurt to laugh with all the tubes and staples in my guts. But as down as I feel sometimes I dont think it'll always be that way. A part of me is like, the worst has already happened, you died in a lot of pain, so what else could there be to terrify you? And then you find out things still take so much time. There's no instant revelation and reparation of your mind. It's a process. Forgive my rambling, I just wanted you to know that I have sorta been there, and I wanted you to know that your videos have helped me fill my time trying to put my life back together and figure out who and what I want to be since I got another chance. You are very appreciated, man.

@@TheBreadB You can flatline, which is considered technically dying (because death is the point from when your heart stops, not completely neurological death), and as long as you remain fairly oxygenated, which you will because you are supplemented with high oxygen atmosphere for the entirety of your surgical procedure, you will not experience brain death, or at least significant neurological trauma. Five minutes is a LONG time for lack of cardiovascular activity, but it does actually happen fairly often, sometimes even longer periods have been recorded (which becomes rarer and rarer and significantly increases likelihood of neurological trauma). You have to remember that a surgical procedure has everything going for you, you are monitored, hooked up to various supplementary LS machines to keep your body going (because realistically speaking many more intensive surgeries would outright kill you without various methods of LS), and if you flatline during, you will have people working to both restart your heart, and keep circulation flowing during that time (cardiovascular massage is a very real technique during invasive surgery if the heart stops). It is very well recorded, and certainly not impossible.

Sounded like ventricular tachycardia. Amiodarone works well to suppress it but can have long term negative side effects, particularly on your lungs. I was actually your nurse briefly before your first surgery and we of course discussed video games and it was how I learned about your channel. I now work in the pre and post procedure area for cardiovascular electrophysiology. You probably have lots of resources for info, but if you have any questions let me know and I hope it goes well and there are no more episodes. Definitely enjoy your takes on RPG's.

I had a a heart cath yesterday and yeah, as you predicted, they didn't find anything. Turns out advent does good work. They went in through transverse radial and now my pointer finger is swollen and hurts like a motherfucker. I'm thinking onset of compartment syndrome. Finger and forearm just below the wrist is swollen slightly. Mostly the pain in the finger tip is crazy. As far as the tach and crazy arrhythmia, You are probably right. My doctor said that I might need to see an electrical specialist if the arrhythmia gets worse. Is a pacemaker possible? Really don't want that.

My release from depression was coming to terms with, and accepting wholly, that there is no meaning to be found. It released me from searching for meaning, for trying to find a reason. Now I create my own reason, if I don't like someone or something I tell them and leave them for dead. I quit any job I don't like doing for more than one week. I go hiking by myself, for myself, with no one else, for hours or days. I don't talk to anyone, or I talk to everyone on a whim. I do not think about what other people think ever, they will either accept what I decide to do or they will not be a part of my life but I don't waste any time in worrying. Time is all we have and I have claimed 100% of my remaining time and I will decide how that time is spent, not other people, not my "job", not my "health".

1:25:30 Pharmacy student here with a fun fact: nicotine doesn't actually calm you very much - you were likely just going through withdrawl before you smoked. A lot of people feel like they have to smoke when they wake up, and that's because nicotine withdrawl starts pretty quickly (within a few hours) and they haven't smoked all night
@vincentmarcellino7183

Yeah. Nicotine is a stimulant so unless you're ADHD and get the weird reversal of stimulant effects then it's not gonna really calm you. It's not very powerful on the stimulant side of things either so even with that reversal it's not gonna do much if at all. The withdrawal effects add more energy(being jittery, temperamental, etc) in fact.

The whole problem I had was the same problem Fallout 3 had: The enemies level together with the player. So, if the game is easy for you, the entire combat experience will be somewhat similar through almost the entirety of the game. I did enjoy Outer Worlds but it I'm not sure if I wanted to spend time playing it again. Maybe my bias was formed by expecting it to have a good amount of depth like Fallout New Vegas did.

FO76 and the MS purchase made people think this game was more than it was - good thing it looks like they want the sequel to be what they had wanted to create (the game got funded like a high-budget indie, not the AAA I think people were expecting or what they would have wanted to make given other circumstances).

Yea if there's one thing that really kills it for me in a rpg, it's when your dialog choices simply don't have any real bearing on the game world or playthrough. Like the game doesn't want the player to feel bad or miss out on stuff for picking responses with consequences. Which makes it feel like the plot is on rails, and your choices ultimately don't matter. Really nerfs the role-playing aspect.

I really like The Outer Worlds and its premise of attacking corporations (just like Cyberpunk 2077), BUT, it's too far-fetched. This exaggerated and fanciful way that corporations and capitalism are bad, evil etc is very childish and forced.

that intro is how I feel. I am now approaching things from a fresh perspective and it feels great because I am more open minded and less prone to echo the same critiques and bad times everyone else has. more often than not I find myself enjoying things more than others did. not because I am blind to flaws, but because in the grand scheme of life those flaws don't mean anything to my experience as a human. If anything now I see imperfection as something that adds character and makes things distinct. If every game was perfect we would all be playing one video game for the rest of our life because there would only be one example of what perfection is and there would never be any risks taken.

I recall watching your first video back when it was released and it hit a nerve. I don't mean that I refused to accept your criticism. Quite the opposite in fact. I subscribed immediately. Seeing this video pop up in my subscription box was a delight and I was really happy to hear your thoughts about the game having gone back to it with a clearer focus. I still think you hit the nail firmly on the head back then, but in this video as well. I can only hope that some of the biggest flaws of the original will be addressed in the recently announced sequel. But the segment regarding your health at the end of this video really caught me off guard. I was expecting you to comment on the DLC as I feel Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos were misguided and fantastic respectively. I was curious to see how you felt about them, but noticed the timeline getting dangerously close to the end. Then you came out with that absolute gut punch. For what it's worth, from a complete stranger on the Internet, I've got my fingers crossed for you. I grew up w the same games & played all the deep CRPGs and tough games but I still found Outer Worlds very fun to play. The combat AI isnt great or particularly tough but its still just fun, the weapons are fun to use, the on-the-nose capitalist dystopia is extremely entertaining, there's plenty to do & explore but its not too big or too long. They could tighten up the combat mechanics for sure and I hope they do with the sequel but I enjoyed it regardless.

This hits hard. The intro alone was deep. Your voice is soothing and your thoughts are fulfilling. I got medicated (I'm a painter) and I worried for years that it would be this drastic change. That I wouldn't be me. Sometimes I miss the chaos, but I honestly feel so much better. Give yourself the chance.

“Without birth and death, and without the perpetual transmutation of all the forms of life, the world would be static, rhythm-less, undancing, mummified.” - Alan Watts "When we exist, death is not; and when death exists, we are not. All sensation and consciousness ends with death and therefore in death there is neither pleasure nor pain. The fear of death arises from the belief that in death, there is awareness.” - Epicurus I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't scared of death somehow, yet the older I get the more I accept it as simply a part of the equation, no more, no less. We create stories. We make narratives for ourselves from life experiences and while sometimes they help they can also get in our way. What happens when we die? Nothing, probably, maybe. I don't know honestly and I don't pretend to know. But I hope you turn your experience around to something that being you more peace. Death is the only thing in the whole universe that is seemingly permanent. Everything else changes constantly, even ourselves at all stages of life. There is some comfort to it

A near death experience has left me dreading death and my mortality which I took for granted before. I sometimes uncounciously put myself in imagined situations of dying and vividly realize what the final moments of getting trapped under a train or bleeding to death would be like, and it fills me with such dread that I feel my heart skipping a beat and my head spinning. The intro of the previous outer worlds review was extremely unpleasant and I had to skip past it. I hope you live a long and healthy life

Super nova difficulty cold be fixed with two changes: 1. You can still only save on your ship, but there are more landing pads to out your ship. 2. You can still fast travel when not in combat. I like everything else about SN and really find it the only difficulty that provides any challenge but on bigger maps it really does get every tiresome. Particularly with the otherwise great DLCs

Hey strat, if you read this. I'd like to share my own experience, with you. So where to even start? I guess I'll say I've had a rough life pretty much since the time I can remember my parents splitting at 7. My father (biological one) had a serious addiction to crack. We'll likely touch on this subject later in this post. My mother would take me and my half-sister, along with a child m*les0r she started to cheat on my father with. We'd be in immense poverty, crack motels, homeless shelters, parks, and bridges being the most common home for us. This would basically continue until I left at 18. I was physical, s*xu*lly and emotionally abused to the extent that I have issues to this day. Like a lisp, I can't shake from how bad I was beaten. This is just to kinda set the scene for things that will happen in the events I went through. So the main thing is, I was two months from 18 at the time I would go through my own near death. See, I was at the time living in Oklahoma. May 6th, 2015 a storm series hit Oklahoma HARD. The thing dropped over 200 tornados in its path across multiple states. I wanted to go to the storm shelter, I felt something was off about this storm. I didn't at the time know why, and to this day I can't explain the instinct to get into cover. But I'd be proven horribly right, as my parents REFUSED to go, and threatened my safety, and even had the trailer we had. And at this time I was more or less under their thumb still. A lot of memories were missing or corrupted as my brain's way of handling it. This is actually a known thing to happen to abuse victims. So as you can probably tell, I got hit by the tornado. The trailer was rolled, picked up, rolled more, thrown down rolled, and I ended up with two trailers and a tree crushing me for HOURS in a deep, dark, wet/flooding hole. I managed to find a glass baking dish I used to prop my head on to keep it above the flooding area. Pain really didn't kick in at this point. I was just sorta...There. I would periodically shout to make sure anyone looking could find me, while also preserving energy as I had no way of knowing if anyone was even looking, let alone how long I'd be down there. I'd be there for at least 3 hours in that hellish pit, alone. After the rescue teams pulled me out using chainsaws, and airbag bubble things. Everything is sorta a blur. I went in for a spinal operation and was generally exposed to painkillers for the first time. I to this day fear and hate them because my mother was drug-addicted, so was her boyfriend, and so was my father. (Her boyfriend the child d*ddl*r was not my father, for clarification.) So to this day, it scares me to death every time I take any sort of medication. But the spinal injury I suffer caused a lot of issues. First, it took me 6 hellish months to be able to sit up, stand, and walk and I more or less had to do it on my own. The period I couldn't walk being the roughest, for some obvious reasons. We ended up in a tent for a while. Once I did manage to get walking again, it'd still be rough to even sit up, but would get slightly better over the next few years. I have a permanent numb spot on my right outer thigh just above the knee area. I deal with nerve issues on the right side, sometimes they just shut off randomly. But the worst part was the pain. Unimaginable pain every minute of every day. For the first year or two, I didn't really take any pain meds once out of the hospital. And my father had to slowly convenience me. And I'd eventually go to pain management, and wind up on morphine for the first few years, then fentanyl patches recently. I'm in agony still every minute of every day. I'm still trying to mentally put myself back together. But I did make some changes. I didn't like the person I was becoming. I was lying and stealing, I also tended to be arrogant and generally not a cool dude. I took after those role models of mine far too much for my liking. I've changed, and the worst thing I ever stole was an old iPod back when I was like 9. But I don't lie, or steal, and generally try to help others where I can. And I often share my story because there are some lessons to be had. About determination being a value, and not giving in despite horrible conditions. And generally struggles to make a person stronger. It's hard a lot of days and I feel like there is an internal clash by part of me wanting to give in at this point some 6-7 years later. But one of the most important is how to not focus on things outside of our control. Everyone has events and things that just are beyond our ability to even influence. And we can't waste time or energy worrying, or getting mad over stuff like that. WE must look to what we can change, improve, and affect. Because those are the only things in life worth investing into. Your videos are always good, and I enjoy them. I enjoy the more positive looks on games like oblivion and the sort of humor in it. And you've always got something interesting to say about games. Keep your head up man. You're making an impact on people. I hope you got something from reading this if you do. And I just genuinely want to thank you. Near-death doesn't unlock some grand understanding. For me, it was just motivation to try to pull myself together as much as I could.

When it comes to games being "too easy," I turn to my personal classification of people and video games... You have the "people who like and play video games," which is the category I belong in. Then there are the "people who excel at video games," then, there are "gamers," and lastly, "game gurus." My class doesn't find "The Outer Worlds" too easy. It's fun and somewhat humorous. I think that my only gripe was not being able to woo Parvati.

The flaw system isn't there's it's from Daggerfall it worked well [high elf with natural immunities to what their flaw said they were weak to resulting in a super min-maxed character notwithstanding] it was according to Ted Peaterson an attempt at improving on the leveling systems of GURPS and AD&D. Good Luck with your medical issues I hope you pull through, I feel you on that I recently had to have some surgeries to fix a potentially fatal issue, my first time being put under, it was terrifying to wake up unable to move, speak or vomit and wanting to do all them at once you have my sympathies on there hope doesn't happen again, but regardless of how it turns I just want you to know I love your videos I'm on a game design course and in the non-practical teachings were encouraged to do the bad 3 ways or joke problem-solving method of game design [while being encouraged to use games to "make statements"] your videos they help me see I'm not alone out there when it comes to design philosophy and that the sensibilities of old design and story are worth fighting for even if your the only one willing to speak of them openingly and passionately, there also bloody hilarious, again good luck and stay strong and I look forward to the next video.

I've found it really really really really really bothers me when enemies don't have ANY kind of reaction to damage... Like, they just stand stock still while shooting them in the legs, arms, head, doesnt matter... But when they die all of a sudden they FULLY ragdoll..? Idk. It drives me crazy, subconsciously!...and I usually lose interest. That's probably why I really liked Rage 1. Lmao. I've wondered about that... but I remember now, when I first played Rage I was so happy enemies actually reacted to being shot, and we'd never have boring static enemies ever again, in ANY game.

43:30 - It was pretty much the opposite for me, never used time dilation on my first playthrough. Seemed more of a chore rather than something that would help. I did play on Normal and found the game way too easy, so that's probably mostly why. Also, the game isn't a cover shooter, not sure what you're on about there. Maybe you meant it would just be a boring old standard FPS.
