It's an artistic style choice, the game isn't serious and it's far from realistic so the world reflects that. In my experience as a photographer people associate cozyness, happiness, fun and lightheartedness with warm vibrant colours while the opposite with cold blue colours. This colour scheme fits the games world much, much better as it really isn't a dark game and at no point gets dark, it's always joking, always having fun.

It’s global illumination. Screen space, not Ray tracing. It’s not a filter like older games(Dey’s Ex), it’s the light bouncing off the rocks and buildings which changes the overall color. Also, dynamic weather was one of the few bullet points the devs posted as a reason to buy the upgrade before release…Always odd to me when people go through the considerable effort to make an analysis video like this, with comparisons & frame time graphs etc. Then still just be willfully ignorant to anything regarding it. I’m not analyzing this game, not marking a video, hell I’ve never played more than an hour of Outer Worlds..But still, somehow, with a cursory reading of the announcement tweet from the devs, I knew more about this update that the multiple people analyzing it as their profession? Come on people. Do better. Incompetence on this level is frustrating on a level that’s hard to explain.

Exactly, they didn't know what to do, they just knew they had to do something to differentiate it from the last gen so they could sell it. And this is what they cobbled together. Frustrating, it looks like when a teen first gets Instagram and thinks the stronger the saturation gets, the better the editing looks.

4:18 vs 4:25 - I massively prefer the look of the original here. It almost feels like they slapped a monotone orangish/brownish filter over the original which I am not a fan of at all. I'm not opposed to the other improvements, but the thing that strikes me most is the new drab (and in some cases much darker) look. The original may have been overly colorful for some, but I prefer it to the new changes.

Generally I hate those things. See State of Decay YOSE or the Euro Truck Simulator 2 update that made the colors warmer and the roads orange and completely devoid of grey - it's so bad that I use ReShade to fix it. Here, however, the colors look fitting, as the game is set on a different planet, so it makes more sense for it to look foreign, wild and vivid. I'd say everyone should run both versions one after the other and see which they like best. Then refund if you have to.

The Outerworlds had a Gen9aware patch on xbox series x for the backwards compatibile version. Meaning it ran at 4K 60fps and I think it was fairly stable.

It wasnt very stable at all. I would get constant frame drops on series x which were incredibly annoying. Nothing worse than a choppy frame rate , I’d rather it just be locked to 30, 40 or 60.

With VRR for me it's so butter smooth it feels better than 60hz. But if the 4K 60 from the 1X upgrade had a smooth framerate (I didnt try it) and if you don't have VRR then don't buy the upgrade. Until it's patched at least.

They must have made some changes to the game engine since this video. I'm running Windows 11, an i9-12900 CPU, and a RTX-3080 @ 1440, and I am getting 160FPS, with everything on Ultra, and FSR 2 is on "Quality." I almost didn't buy this Spacer's Edition because of videos like this.

Honestly, looks like they slapped the "Vivid" preset on it and called it a day. Would rather play the original, colours look natural, closer to SRGB. The lighting has improved on interiors, but that isn't enough to warrant paying £5 for an upgrade, screw that for a laugh.

Supposedly, there are changes to NPC combat behaviour, but I guess it would take a bit of testing to reveal those. A higher level cap is also kind of nice. I was fairly happy with the graphics and performance on the OG version with my 2080, but I think it will become a slide show with the new version. Shame as I really want an excuse to jump back in.

great vid, the new edition does still need some optimization work and falls short in some places. The game is already quite colorful (especially if you turn up digital vibrance on nvidia) but overall the visuals do seem to look better. They are working on a patch for the performance issues too, still dont understand why people are so entitled they expect devs to work on stuff for free.

On XSX with VRR there is a very, very occasional environmental stutter (I've left Terra2 and only noticed 2 so far) but the framerate is butter smooth and while I'm not on board with a couple of the facial upgrades (evil bowler hat man seems to have gratuitous bulges, creases and wrinkles) I love the rest of the visual upgrade. (I cannot detect gunplay changes) but for $12AUD it's totally worth it for me. A good hamburger costs $12

For anyone on the fence, go with the original. It's not even a question. Decided to pick the game up now and bought both editions out of curiosity. In the remaster they've screwed up all the lighting, bright parts getting overblown while black level is dusty at best. Colour pallete primarily on the red side, robbing the picture of depth. Muddy and unstable TAA. Ridiculously poor performance. The original is damn beautiful with a much wider colour pallette, blue and red sides of spectrum playing of each other. Much better lighting, and a more stable and clean picture. It's just more pleasant to the eye. Superb performance, with the occasional shader compilation stutter.

OG use color pallete that more fit to game art style none of them is realistic and tbh realistic dont mean better looking especially in game with art style like The Outer Worlds. Devs pretty much always design their visuals to fit to game tone and purpose this means lighting, color grading and other effects same in movies having everything realistic in terms of visuals would be boring.

So the Spacers choice is on sale on steam for like... $36 and the base game with dlc's is $26, and if I pay an extra 10 bucks I get a world that sure has, 60 some odd more levels, but also looks harder to see around and more grainy. + I play on pc, so ill just chnge the fps myself... looking back, im thankful I never paid for it, it is 120% a cash grab.

The Outer Worlds last gen version runs best on the XSX, since it has a solid upscaled 4K/60FPS performance troughout. This remaster "spacers choice edition" is just another of many cash crabs in this console Generation. The PS5 and XSX are all about remakes and remasters and while some remakes are outstanding (Dead Space Remake) some remasters are just not worth it (Skyrim, 20th Anniversary Edition) The Outer Worlds spacers choice edition seems to boost overall contrast, so in daylight you have a warmer hue over the screen and landscape simulating the warmth of the sun. However many Animations look oversaturated and cluncky. Performance mode in the next gen version is a disaster and unstable. The original version looks great enough, and the blue like tint over the landscape gives it its very own style. If you have a XSX and Gamepass, play the original version. Its a better experience for sure.

I played this on my PS5 via backwards compatibility with locked 60 FPS & 1440p resolution. & I have to pay now around 40€ or I do need the season pass + 10$ upgrade fee to play nearly the same game with ~50 frames unstable? I've just ordered a Series S and was looking to see if this game was optimized yet. I loved it on my One S despite the bad performance and graphics. I'm quite disappointed. I just wish they would've released a 60fps boost to the original game so we wouldn't have to deal with the bad frame times. To join in with what others have already said: like garbage. Fidelity mode looks like it's hovering between 28-30 FPS, but the frame pacing isn't very good. When you turn your character, it is ROUGH. Performance mode is a joke, it's choppy as hell. Fidelity mode is actually smoother, but neither mode offers an acceptable experience. Sony isn't known for being big on refunds, but I'm going to try to get my money back once I get home from work tonight.

Is it still that way? Or did it get a patch? I’m trying to decide between spacers choice & original. If I play original on next gen console are the loading screens still 30 seconds?

This is one game where I prefer the lower saturation in color, though I do prefer the lighting in the Spacer's Choice. Change in lighting/some geometry does not warrant a "Remaster" price. I feel like they rushed this out to get get a quick buck and Outer Worlds deserved an actual remake treatment (intro is horrifically boring slogfest, some of the main story beats is cringe for modern day).

They're both on sale on steam right now and the level cap and the dlc is making me really consider refunding the original and getting the spacer's choice

Only just bought this game in Dec 23 and instinctively bought the new and improved one. However I think the feel of the older version looks better, can't stand the orange hue of everything outside.

Brighter. Everything bathed in piss-coloured light. I like the increased detail though.
