Outside my family and close friends , I can’t imagine or think of a better human than Sophie Tucker ! Phenomenal and gifted singer and overall entertainer , there is no telling how many people loved and were effected by her ! Being Jewish , I couldn’t hold the tears back when the Yiddishe Mama story was told ! This song was sang at my mom’s ritual ! God bless you , Sophie , and I hope the world never forgets you ! I won’t ! With love , Stu Kurland , Modesto , Ca

That was a great video and much appreciated. By the time I saw her perform in the early sixties her voice was pretty much gone but still put it over . I loved seeing her in her prime and now understand what all the fuss was about! When she sang, “ Some of these Days” I understood fully why my parents revered her!

I’m 68. I grew up hearing her name but at only 10 years of age in 1963 I never really understood her contribution to American entertainment. A truly remarkable life. Thank you. (My Colombian wife’s aunt met her at her penthouses in New York sometime around 1964).

Sophie Tucker did it all - Vaudeville, radio, films, television, night clubs, etc. A true "legend" in an age when the word is so overused! Steve Allen wrote a wonderful musical called "Sophie," based on he life of Sophie Tucker, which premiered on Broadway in the spring of 1963. Unfortunately, the run was quite short, but you can hear Judy Garland and Steve Allen sing a few of the songs from that musical (broadcast on Judy's television show during the 1963-64 season). This remains as probably the only record of (some) of the songs from the musical - as a "cast album" was never made. The television clip is out here on KZbin called "Sophie 1963." Sophie Tucker didn't star in Mr. Allen's show, but did attend "opening night" and several critics thought she should have been on stage playing herself - in spite of the fact that by then Miss Tucker was well into her seventies and the story involved her early life and career. I have the opening night's "Playbill" (in perfect condition, which I got from a New York collector years back) and treasure it, as it's signed by Sophie Tucker, as well as Mr. Allen - along with most of the main cast. Anyway, thanks for the wonderful upload - Cheers to all!

I;m 69, but I remember seeing her on Ed Sullivan when I was a child. Over the years I listened to her songs, and saw her movies. I've always admired her talent, her bold brassy, gutsy personality. She knew how to market herself and stand up for other entertainers who were discriminated against. She was some lady.

Love this history. She really absorbed the likes of Ma Rainey and Bessye Smith

Maybe you don't know she started her carreer a decade before Bessie Smith and started to record in 1911 while Rainey in 1923...

Ma Rainey began her career in the late 1890s. Of course she absorbed the styles of the blues shouters. She actually paid Ethel Waters to give her lessons in vocal delivery.

I was intruduced to Sophie Tucker by some friends in college back in the late '70s . My husband (fiance back then) and I loved Bette Middlet's immitation of Sophie on Saturday Night Live and other popular variety shows of that period.

At 0:28 she is being kissed by (of all people) Sir C Aubrey Smith in 'Sensations of 1945', a crazy and wonderful pot pourri including Eleanor Powell, Cab Calloway, WC Fields, Woody Herman and circus acts. Sophie walks round the nightclub floor regaling the seated patrons with 'You Can't Sew a Button on a Heart' (glimpse at 4:07). It is a masterclass in working the room, and conveys- unlike many musicals on celluloid- the power a great live entertainer can wield over an audience. She was up with Jolson, Garland, Piaf, Caruso...

I saw her name on displays on the marque of old photos of The Palace Theater and so I looked her up. She seemed to be one of the first feminist of entertainment, before that term was around.
