I need to give one warning about the show. It's the type of show that starts as kid show and then suddenly turns into an extremely adult show.

Nearly all the main characters are coded neurodivergent, with Luz possibly being ADHD (i think). The line "There is no place in society for you if you can't fit in" was a message a lot of neurodivergents got growing up.

Yes. I always interpreted the arc about Luz's mom being revealed to be a "secret nerd" to be about her being neurodivergent too. Her special interest is that Star Trek type show. She was pressured into sending Luz to the "think in the box" camp by the principal and went along with it because she felt ostracized when she was younger and didn't want Luz to go through the same thing.

Starting off what's probably going to be a regular fixture of the comments on this series: - Pay attention to the titles of each episode. Besides being full of puns and references ('A Lying Witch and a Warden' being a play on _The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe,_ for example), the first letter of each episode contributes to a message spanning the entire season. Season 2 does the same, while the shorter Season 3 uses the first words of each title. - Luz Noceda, Dominican-American teenage screwball with the voice of Sarah-Nicole Robles, is 100% _me_ in high school. Honestly, anyone who felt like a misfit in school or fell in with certain cliques is gonna relate to her and the rest of the cast -- they're all _weirdos,_ and it's _beautiful._ (Series creator Dana Terrace poured a lot of herself into this story, and Luz especially.) - Bonesborough, one of the biggest cities on the Boiling Isles, a nation built atop the corpse of a fallen Titan. 'Weird' is kinda the guiding principle of this series, which helped make a world that's completely unlike anything else out there. - Meet Edalyn 'Eda' Clawthorne, voiced by Wendie Malick -- rogue Witch and part-time merchant of junk. She's gonna be the resident Mentor character, though make no mistake: there's a _lot_ more to her than just a fabulous mane! - Correct reaction to Hooty. He's... _something._ - King is one of the fan-favorite characters, possibly at least partially due to him having the voice of Alex Hirsch, creator of (and actor in) fellow screwball series _Gravity Falls._ Again, there's a lot more to the character that'll get explored as the series goes on. - Katya, the girl in the cell who writes fanfics about food love? Voiced by Grey DeLisle Griffin. (Tinella Nosa, the conspiracy theorist, is voiced by Dana Terrace herself -- she's a minor character, but she keeps popping up throughout the series.) - "Us weirdos have to stick together!" is one of the best taglines Disney's ever attached their name to. - As a general rule, anything you _expect_ this show to do, it probably _won't_ -- Dana's creative mind _frolics_ among the opportunities of the unexpected here. This show is _gloriously_ unique. This series really takes off in the first few episodes of the first season. Episode 3 brings in most of the supporting cast; with Episodes 4 and 5, it should be pretty clear what kind of story you're in for; and with Episode 7, I'm pretty sure you're gonna be _fully_ invested in the dynamics of these characters. You're in for a _ride,_ Omni. Buckle up and enjoy!

To add to this delightful overview, episode 15 is about where Dana was given more creative control of the series while much of the initial 14 episodes contain a mixture of her own and more obligatory episodic elements. If you find yourself enjoying the overall theme of the show, hold tight because Dana's going to start jam-packing every episode full of deep lore and emotionally evocative content toward the end of the first season, and the rest of the show puts the pedal to the metal and never lets up.

The tiny nose character is a caricature of the show's creator, Dana Terrace, that she drew herself and she's the voice of the character. The voices of King, Hooty, and Gildersnake in this episode are by Alex Hirsch, who created Gravity Falls (after you've watched this I recommend that). Hooty is his goofy take on Mickey Mouse that he did as a joke when they were trying to find the right voice for the character & Dana loved it and so he had to do it for the rest of the series. The first part of the season introduces elements that continue throughout the series, which started out as Disney likes with not a lot of full connectivity so they could take a random episode that they could air at any time to fill in between their movies or specials and the rest of the schedule that the viewers didn't need to watch the full show to keep up. But by the end of the season and into season 2 it became much more serialized & Disney underestimated its popularity and cancelled it by about midway into season 2. They found out what a mistake they made at NYCC 2021, when they had a panel with a huge turnout. Anyway, you're in for a fun ride and yeah, there's quite a bit of action in it and a bit more poking fun at Harry Potter.

Some VA facts I love about this show: Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) not only co-created the show with Dana Terrace, but also does multiple voices, including King and Hooty (if you listen closely, King sounds like Bill Cipher without the reverb) The guy who eats his own eyes is Arin Hanson. Yes, THE Egoraptor. This isn’t his only role in the show tho. He has another coming in a few more episodes. Warden Wrath is voiced by, of all people, Roger Craig Smith. Most people, including me, know him best for Sonic. The Tiny Nose creature (Tiny Nose is what she’s known as) is voiced by the series creator Dana Terrace. Dana herself was a writer, director, and animator for other shows. One example is she was the one who did the defeat of Bill Cipher at the end of Gravity Falls.

Fun fact: the Boiling Isles was originally supposed to be set in hell, but Disney opposed any tie to that. So they just leave the explanation of being in different realms pretty basic. Which is why they have that, “Am I in the bad place?” line.
