Hi all. A bit of an Indian Mutiny themed shoot... Tried some different audio this time.... hope it's all right. Please don't get to wrapped up in all the commands... they're there mostly for "atmosphere" (although, when they appear, they are correctly given... :-)
Thanks to the "memsahib" for all the help on this one! Great job.

Apologies because I am late to this, customarily excellent, video. The P53 might be a bit slow to use as a muzzle-loader but what an accurate bit of kit it (mostly) is. Thank you for the history lesson.

It certainly was a quantum leap forward for it's time. As with all of these rifles, it's important to take it's accuracy within the context of the era. Cheers.

I gotta say you are really a crack shot! The P53 Enfield is a fantastic rifle - it is a fine and very accurate firearm. I am an American Civil War reenactor of 30 years experience in regiments out of N Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee. I carried and drilled and fought with the same model rifle you use here. Your manual of arms and form are perfect. It is really interesting for me to see the Enfield and British accoutrements in their native British military style employment. Not really much difference from the Confederate!

Given the somewhat informal and hodge-podge outfitting of the British Army in the early part of the Indian Mutiny, it would not surprise me in the slightest that some of the Highlanders in the 79th wore their kilt, and looked very much like your appearance in this video.
@britishmuzzleloaders

There has been some interesting research done on what the 78th, in particular wore. The consensus was that kilts were not worn and hence the caveat in the video... :-) You are certainly right about the hodge lodge nature! The 79th did wear it's kilts.

some of those tactics, I don't know, it seems to me better to advance at the ready than shouldered, and to wait for command to load when a firefight is ahead of you? one thing is for sure, i bet they had a hell of a time getting the order to divert to the ships back then, even with a pre-planned course! i'll tell you your vids are like cap and ball's and c&rsenal's a good piece apart but well worth the wait!!
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 8 жыл бұрын
What is advancing at the ready? (your definition of course) As an aside point, there are many examples of attacking with unloaded weapons. But really, the commands and such are there for a bit of flavour... Now if there were 20 of us....
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 8 жыл бұрын
keith moore I see... I think that you are reading too much into the commands and such... This is not a serious study of tactics and fire orders. There is more close examination in the Musketry and Modes of Fire video in the Enfield playlist. If you can deduce that the British Army took necessary losses because of their tactics and the American Armies didn't, all from this video, you have a talent... :-)... By what you have said, all small arms engagements in your Civil War stared when the sides saw one another? How then can the fact that most engagements were fought at ridiculously close range be true then? Surely they would have been kept apart from the fire of such powerful weapons?
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 8 жыл бұрын
keith moore "more gun than manual"?... If it's "manual" you're after, then there are a few videos on the subject... :-)... The Manual Exercise, the Platoon Exercise, the Bayonet Exercise, and as mentioned, Musketry.... I suppose that I am seeking clarification of where you arrived at your conclusions... you made suppositions that indicated that something I did in this video indicated the use of some sort of less-than-effective tactics... Delivering musketry and advancing... It's all aimed fire... redeploying and delivering more musketry... assaulting a position after your musketry has eroded the defence.. These are all tenants of warfare that are the reality of successful battles fought all over the globe. I would hesitate to generalize too much here. Your Civil War is full of examples of advances and head long rushes against dug-in enemy.. no firing on sight there.... :-).

It is the command "in the book" .. would it have been used in action, probably not, but then again, formality exists in the funniest of places..

I know regulation states that by this point that the British infantrymen only carried a bayonet for close quarters combat, but I was wondering if especially in colonial fighting such as during the Indian mutiny, soldiers would have carried smaller knives and swords as the bayonet cannot really be used without attaching it to the longer musket? Did any regiments carry these additional weapons in conflicts in the Crimea or India? I have seen some artwork of highland units carrying their broadswords into the Crimea.
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there! There is no evidence to suggest that ORs carried anything but their muskets (and I am speaking of the Army proper whether HM or HEIC regiments, not irregular units). I am discounting something like a knife that may have been carried in the haversack for foraging, eating and the like, of course...What artwork were you thinking of?
@superfarhan101
@superfarhan101 5 жыл бұрын
I can’t seem to find the exact piece, but I believe it may have been from the 18th century rather than the Crimean war. I suppose swords would have been completely unnecessary by the napoleonic age. Still with various accounts of close fighting said to have occurred in Indian campaign in the anglo-Sikh wars and the mutiny, I thought that maybe some units would have still carried a small knife or a sword, even if not mentioned in regulations.
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 5 жыл бұрын
Indeed close quarter fighting was a feature of the times. Knives (such as, for instance, a highland dirk) or swords (such as the broadsword of the same) were not carried by ORs. The last ORs to carry swords (notwithstanding Staff Sergeants who were essentially non-combatants, the Amrourer, the Bandmaster, etc,..) were Sgts of the Guards... they took them to the Crimea but were discontinued there and for ever more...

Gurkhas used kukri knives quite a bit, they took part in the Indian Mutiny aswell as several other Victorian wars and other era's.

Excellent video! I have an ArmiSport P53. Could you describe the loading process? Is the ball removed from the paper cartridge or is it upside down and greased and loaded as a paper patched round? Is the remainder of the cartridge discarded or rammed down bore on top of the ball? Thanks in advance!

Fresh of my million questions about Snider loading, I now have a question about Enfield Reproductions. I'm thinking of getting a P53 Enfield. Sadly Parker-Hale is out of the question. So I'm trying to figure out if a new Chiappa would be service able. The one I am looking at is apparently 0.581 caliber. Do you have any thoughts on Chiappa as compared to Pedersoli and/or Parker Hale? The Chiappa is just barely affordable for me at present, but I'm trying to figure out if it's a good target shooting gun. As always, thanks so much for any and all advice!
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 7 жыл бұрын
I have no experience with Chiappa muskets. Sorry. That said, most rifle-muskets can be made to shoot OK. The issue is with the bore size.. .581 is big and you will have a harder time finding a bullet to fit properly... At .581, you'll want a bullet that is .580... most Burton style bullet moulds yield bullets that are in the neighbourhood of .575 - .577... too small to get the best accuracy from in a .581 barrel. That is the issue....

I'm curious, is the war of 1857 called the Indian Mutiny in text books ? We call it "The first war of independence". What are students in the U.K. Taught about its imperialist past? Oppressors - Mutiny Oppressed - War of Independence

Hi Charles. You might be kind of stuck with that large bore of yours. You will probably have to go with a custom mould if you want to get best accuracy out of your rifle... If you PM me with your email, I can send you a great document on the different patterns of cartridges and their make -up...

Why does it seem to take so long? Simply put; because you have the rest of your life to get it loaded, and get an accurate shot downrange. 😄 Honest to God, as much as I loved Soldiering it must have been pure Suck for those Lads given the equipment and conditions; and I do not envy them whatsoever.
