The UC Board of Regents has exactly zero power to do anything as sports conference affiliation is a campus decision. Most other UC campuses have D1/D2 teams playing in several different conferences of their own choosing, so this whole flex by the Regents is entirely unnecessary and puzzling. Ironically, I'm an 'SC alum sticking up for my crosstown rival.

Here is an excerpt from Wilner's report: For all the half-answers and complete unknowns presented Wednesday at the University of California Board of Regents meeting about UCLA’s planned departure for the Big Ten, one thing was perfectly clear: This isn’t over. From UC system president Michael Drake describing the impact report as an “interim” document to regent John A. Perez noting that the meeting was “a really good start to the conversation,” the governing body of the UC indicated it plans a deep dive into all aspects of UCLA’s move, including its impact on Cal. It had been widely assumed that UCLA chancellor Gene Block had the authority to act on his own with regard to leaving the Pac-12. But here's this tidbit from Wilner's report: Charlie Robinson, the general counsel for the UC Office of the President, seemed to indicate the regents could withdraw the authority delegated to a chancellor.

UC Board of Regents is the governing body of UC schools, UC San Diego, UC Davis, UCLA, UC ______. They are all under that umbrella. USC is a private school not affiliated with the UC Board of Regents. Helping you out.

Cal Berkeley is only to blame for their sports downfall. They used to be one of the top schools for the PAC but the last 10 years they gave up on their programs and basically doesn't want them. Look at their baseball team. They won the championship and then cut the program all within a few months. You don't see them trying to bring in a coach to bring that prestige that they once had....hell I think the rivalry between standard vs cal is pretty dead. Cal I think is done with sports but still wants money...

This 9.8 million is just a number they are throwing out. We will find out when the new tv deal is worked out. They thought they were worth 50 million a piece and if they only get 25 million that is a heck of a lot more than 9.8.

UCLA fan here. I think Newsom knew that there was nothing he or the UC Board of Regents could do to stop UCLA from going to the Big Ten. The 9 UC schools are in various conferences and I have never heard of them getting involved in conference realignment. It would be shocking if UC Berkeley tried to get money out of this as well.

@@chsmithins In 1991, the University of California Office delegated authority to campus chancellors to execute their own intercollegiate athletic agreements. They have their own authority to do whatever they want in regards to their athletics programs. The state regents have no authority, they gave up their right back in 91. They only have authority in relations to academics, not the athletics department. So they can be upset all they want, but according to the laws in the state of California, there is nothing they can do about it. UCLA can move to whatever conference they choose. Also, UCLA is 100 million in the red for their athletic department. they are barely hanging on. By moving to the B1G, they just saved it. So unless the state of California wants to divvy up more tax dollars for UCLA’s athletic department, then it’s a great financial move.

I’m only pointing out that by law, that can’t do anything to stop UCLA. Now, could they withhold state funds? I’m sure they could, but they would face a legal law suit from the university since there’s no legal justification for them to withhold anything.

It's about the TV markets they pulled in which is what this is all about .... $$$$. Yes, tu and OK have strong followings but on the field tu hasn't been relevant in a long long time. We have 2 years on our GOR before we renegotiate. That is 2 years of winning Football for the broadcasters to look at. I estimate 45M+. If you look at Athletic income, BYU is a giant win, and Cincy, Houston, and CFU also bring things up positively. All start before the GOR is renegotiated. I see no reason why we can recoup our losses.

The Pac 12 is done as a conference. If/when, more likely when Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, and Colorado join the Big XII and if/when Washington and Oregon head to the B1G, the Pac 12 may cease to exist

My reference: California native, SoCal, born and raised in LA County. GN is an empty suit. He should have done more to get Sacramento St. and UC Davis into the Mountain West (they have football). But because of the state's apathy toward intercollegiate; athletics...they lost UCLA to the Big 10. Period. P.S. I played ICA (intercollegiate athletics) at another UC in the system. I don't care about Davis, but they have football. Elevate them instead of holding down UCLA. Typical California though.

Do schools need to be a part of the same athletic conference to have academic relationships with each other? Engineering departments at Purdue are not allowed to communicate with Engineering departments at Stanford because they don't play football against each other every year? Notre Dame is going to join a conference because they think it's what's best for them, not because of what schools are in the conference. If the Big10 cannot entice ND with Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, and USC, adding Stanford is not going to push them over the edge. And ND has a more traditional rival with Navy anyway.

Both schools were independently negotiating with the BIG w/o the the others knowledge. They found out about each other towards the end and decided to work together to get a better deal. This is all about media market/coverage and not about who has the best college football team. The BIG and Fox media wanted all the Southern California market. Both schools have a huge alumni base that follows the athletic teams and Southern California is the largest media market in the USA.

Love you guys but California and the UC System may as well be Mars for you guys down in Texas. Not saying anything will be done.
