The Marines have always had funding challenges, and still do. Partly because some in Congress have always felt they are unnecessary. Also, they have always got hand-me-downs. But the primary problem was that the US decided that Europe had priority, so all branches fighting in the Pacific were underfunded and even abandoned, as were those serving in the Philippines at the start of the war.

I think John's meant to be portrayed as having mixed feelings about receiving his medal. He's proud and thankful, but at the same time he also feels like he just did his job, like any other marine, and that those who died, like Manny, deserve more recognition for making the ultimate sacrifice. As for Leckie staying with Stella and her parents, no, he didn't really have the permission to do that. He was supposed to stay on base, so technically he was AWOL, but the higher ups didn't really enforce the rules much at first, as they figured the soldiers deserved/needed to let loose a little and blow off some steam after the hardships they'd faced on Guadalcanal. After a while though, they had to commit to their training and such again in order to maintain discipline, and the rules started being enforced more firmly.

This episode was a special treat for an Aussie like me because I finally got a piece of entertainment where I recognised the areas they shot at. I recognise Flinders Street station (that big building in the background where Leckie meets Stella for the first time), for example, because I take the train there every morning to go to Uni. It seems trivial, but for someone who so rarely gets to see my country feature in big shows and movies, let alone my home city, it’s great for me.

Remember most of Australia's armed forces were deployed to North Africa to fight Rommel. So the airbase on Guadalcanal would've allowed the Japanese to bomb cities like Sydney and Brisbane, as well as launch an invasion of Eastern Australia. The Australians did have some industrial capacity to make arms and war equipment. The AC1 Sentinel tank and the CAC Boomerang fighter were developed in case of a Japanese attack but when the US had enough equipment to supply them they were relegated to less important roles

John Basilone's Medal of Honor Citation: "For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action against enemy Japanese forces, above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division in the Lunga Area, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 24 and 25 October 1942. While the enemy was hammering at the Marines' defensive positions, Sgt. BASILONE, in charge of 2 sections of heavy machine guns, fought valiantly to check the savage and determined assault. In a fierce frontal attack with the Japanese blasting his guns with grenades and mortar fire, one of Sgt. BASILONE'S sections, with its gun crews, was put out of action, leaving only 2 men able to carry on. Moving an extra gun into position, he placed it in action, then, under continual fire, repaired another and personally manned it, gallantly holding his line until replacements arrived. A little later, with ammunition critically low and the supply lines cut off, Sgt. BASILONE, at great risk of his life and in the face of continued enemy attack, battled his way through hostile lines with urgently needed shells for his gunners, thereby contributing in large measure to the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment. His great personal valor and courageous initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service."

I was reading a book about the complex relationship between Australia and Great Britain and the relationship between Australia and America. The people of Australia had no great commitment towards the allied war effort. They were especially suspicious of the possibility of their troops being used as canon fodder for Great Britain as they had in the first great war. The government under Curtin was somewhat more realistic about their country's commitment towards the British, even as they were condescended to by the British Foreign office and he colonial office. It took awhile for the British government to come around to the reality of the new relationship with the commonwealth nations. Senior British diplomats still had the notion of the EMPIRE firmly planted in their minds when dealing with EX-Colonies. Australia was flirting with America through the late 1930s and into the 1940s. America represented an important potential trade ally. Australia was strategically positioned so that the Americans needed them to wage the Pacific campaign. Their common language and political interests made them a natural partner. Also Curtin's government used this as a pressure point in negotiating with the British government, who had their backs against the wall in Europe. Australian troops serving in the North African desert under British officers were deemed wasted when Australia needed its men close to home to face the threat of Japan. I may be way off, but that's as I understood what I read. My sources are Max Hastings' 'Retribution' and Andrew Stewart's 'Empire Lost, Britain, The Dominions and the Second World War'.

Oh no John Basilone got the Medal of Honor for his accomplishments. What he did on Guadalcanal is legendary, even today Gunnery Sergeant Basilone is revered in the United States Marine Corps. It would have been a disgrace if he didn’t get the Medal of Honor. They don’t just give that medal out to anyone. You have to perform extraordinary acts of courage and heroism above and beyond the call of duty. His actions on Guadalcanal definitely fulfilled that criteria. The political aspect likely occurred naturally afterwards. The United States was still in the middle of World War II, so there were probably officials higher up who saw his story and thought, what better way to inspire the people and raise funds for the war effort than to have a legitimate hero as the face and voice of that effort in a time when the country needed heroes to look up to. It was important because the Marines needed additional funding for better gear and equipment to fight the war, but it’s not the kind of thing Basilone wanted to do. As a Marine, he wanted to be out there with his men. He didn’t feel comfortable going home and having all this attention on him being hailed as a hero, while so many others were out there fighting and dying. Its true that Basilone felt conflicted over being awarded the Medal of Honor. It wasn’t so much that he felt guilt over the number of enemy he killed, because that’s what he had to do in order to survive and save other Marines. He was proud and thankful to receive such an honor, but he felt that others deserved it too. Especially all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, like his best friend Manny who died in Episode 2. So what he’s likely feeling is survivors guilt. This will be a common theme in the next few episodes, and it’s something many who’ve been through war experience. Someone like Basilone might often think, why did I survive? Why do I get to go home and have it so good? Being labeled a hero is a heavy burden to carry, and one that John finds difficult to cope with in the coming episodes.

@@PiggyPigFace Sorry, but that couldn't be further from the truth. That is false information, and where do you trace that, because civilians have always just called military people soldiers? If you want to talk about technical, then soldier literally means an Army serviceman. Take with a grain of salt, but from what I have heard, Australians had been fighting against Japan for longer and getting paid less than these Americans on leave, though I cannot say how their pay compared to Marines. And some of these Americans were starting trouble, so there were tensions. And then, yes, the fraternization with (sometimes harassment of) local women was considered part of that trouble. Not all of the resentment was justified, but some of it was understandable.

True, but she did have feelings for him. She just also didn't want to put her parents through possibly/most likely losing another 'son', whether it be through Leckie dying or him just not coming back, which he probably wasn't going to do. Leckie was being shortsighted and only considered his feelings for her in that moment, while Stella was looking at the bigger picture as a whole. Like she said, she was still crazy about him, but she knew things most likely wouldn't work out between them. There's also the fact that Leckie was still in in love with Vera as well, and in at least some aspects Stella was probably more of a temporary surrogate than anything else.
