japanese soldiers were committing genocide in china so let's not throw respect to "both sides". Japan wanted to become a self-sustaining country and in order to do that, it meant colonizing china, other asian countries, and Australia. If you need an example, look up the rape on Nanking.

@@Mmontoya94 I've read it many times. I never designate a primary source for any war or conflict as the "Best" because its very vague. With the Old Breed is the most deeply personal i guess would be the way to describe it of a front line marine in the pacific. Its Brutal, Its graphic, its down right disturbing and difficult to read at times. It took hom 40 years to muster the guts to put pen to paper and he lets out all of the things he had been battling up for so long out. Its purpose was to explain to his family why he was the way he was..his wife urged him to publish it. Make it required reading in public schools....that would ensure alot less wars.
@Mmontoya94
@Mmontoya94 3 жыл бұрын
@@drewdurbin4968 that’s what I appreciated so much from the book, it’s uncensored perspective. Hollywood has glamorized war in so many films, history books skip the details, and teachers gloss over the subject. I first read it after I watched the series when I saw it in the credits and again just a few years ago in a college class when I saw it listed under a recommended reading list. It should definitely be required reading. The series does its best to add as many things from the book, like digging out gold plated teeth from bodies, but a show can only do so much. What war does to your body and mind can only be portrayed in so many different ways on screen-reading about someone’s intimate experience with war is something else entirely.

Gy Sgt Basilone's death in this episode wasn't even close to how he really went down, obviously for theatrical reasons. He was hit by gunshots to his right groin and neck and by artillery shrapnel that nearly took off his left arm. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his actions on Iwo Jima, so he received the two top Marine Corps combat medals for his actions in WWII.

John Basilone was a great embodiment of "selfless service." He did what was best for his country and his fellow Marines.
@DanielRamosMilitaryWiz
@DanielRamosMilitaryWiz 3 жыл бұрын
Filming of this series took place in Australia. Actually Basilone was still a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, but It doesn’t matter what his rank was, military personnel render salute to Medal of Honor recipients. John Basilone’s actions during the first day (D-Day) of the invasion of Iwo Jima were critical in helping the Marines advance inland from the beaches. So Basilone actually was playing it smart, because he realized if they stayed on that beach they were all going to get slaughtered. Literally their only hope was to keep moving forward and start taking out the Japanese defenses in order to reduce the amount fire being directed at them. Yes, many Marines were going to die, but they were definitely going to die if they stayed on that beach. The same was true on Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion. His actions actually helped the Marines penetrate the Japanese defenses on Iwo Jima. He led them towards Airfield Number 1, and he even aided an American tank that was trapped in a minefield by guiding it across hazardous terrain to safety. All of this was done while under heavy enemy fire. Basilone was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism on Iwo Jima. I don’t think it was overconfidence, he was likely running on pure adrenaline, but I think he realized that something needed to be done, and he did what leaders do by taking the initiative.

When you are in basic, there is no person in the world you hate more than your Drill Instructor. They will abuse you every waking hour and then haunt your dreams when you manage to grab some sleep. They will pick on you constantly, they will nit pick every mistake, and you will do nothing but make mistakes. It is very common that recruits wish their DI would have some horrific accident, more than a few try planning the accident. When you get out, especially if you are going into combat you thank those blessed sergeants for everything they did to you (although you might still be okay if they had at least a small accident).

D-Day is basically a planning term for an operation. You figure out what your objectives are, how much you can use towards that objective, and what the environmental factors need to be. While planning an operation, the beginning is scheduled for H-Hour on D-Day. Everything is then calibrated to that schedule, H minus 30 minutes, D plus 1 day, D plus 2 days, etc. As part of the plan you determine what the environment needs to be, such as low tide at dawn with a full moon the night before. Then you look for days that meet that requirement and that day becomes D+Day. When people think of D-Day, they think of Normandy because it was the largest invasion of that sort and it began the liberation of Europe.

The problem with John and Lena's first date was that John was trying to impress her and put on a show by taking her to his suite. Lena would have much preferred a date with the 'real' John, with him just being himself. The fancy suite was certainly impressive, and some girls would like that, but Lena knew it's not who John really is and therefore it was disingenuous.

But even today, there's plenty of non-actors----sports stars, musicians, etc---who do totally robotic commercials on tv & radio. No one really cares, because they don't expect them to be good actors. Just the fact that Basilone is an actual war hero would be enough for most people in the 40's to take the PSA seriously.

The Battle for Iwo Jima was one of the toughest campaigns in the history of the USMC and one of the most difficult of the entire war in the Pacific. In fact, it was the only battle in the Pacific where American casualties exceeded Japanese casualties: 26,000 American casualties (6,800 killed and 19,000 wounded) compared to just over 18,000 Japanese casualties (18,000 killed and 216 taken prisoner). Iwo Jima is perhaps most famous for the picture of a group of six Marines raising an American flag on the top of Mt. Suribachi. While many people associate that picture with victory that was only the fourth day of the battle which went on for another month after it. I would recommend watching a pair of movies that were directed by Clint Eastwood: Flags of Our Fathers which was about the guys that raised the flag and the effect it had on them and then Letters From Iwo Jima which tells the story of the battle from the Japanese point of view.

Unfortunately it was 30,000 casualties, not 30,000 men fighting total. 8 square miles for those awful casualties. But it is worth noting that unlike Peleliu it was worth it. More American service members were saved by using Iwo Jima as an emergency landing field and base for fighter escorts than were lost in the battle. Also D-Day was the general term in WW2 for the day of any amphibious invasion. Only post war has it become synonymous with June 6.

You should watch the Korean War movie called 71 into the fire and it’s based on a true story of South Korean student soldiers that were used as emergency troops at Pusan perimeter while North Korea invaded most of Korea. The most important battle was pohang girls middle school and it’s between 71 students against North Korean army

Navy Cross citation of John Basilone for Iwo Jima. Quote: “On February 19, 1945, shortly after single-handedly destroying a blockhouse on Iwo Jima’s Red Beach and guiding a trapped tank out of a minefield under attack, Basilone was killed by a mortar shell. “Gunnery Sergeant Basilone boldly defied the smashing bombardment of heavy caliber fire to work his way around the flank and up to a position directly on top of the blockhouse and then, attacking with grenades and demolitions, single-handedly destroyed the entire hostile strong point and its defending garrison,” according to his Navy Cross citation. His actions helped Marines break down the Japanese defense during the crucial early parts of the invasion. “In the forefront of the assault at all times, he pushed forward with dauntless courage and iron determination,” the citation said.” How is that “pointless”,or “maybe overconfidence”? navylog.navymemorial.org/basilone-john

D-day was the date that an invasion started, the D stood for day so it’s literally day-day, and the time it starts is referred H-hour, hour-hour

It's a matter of honor, pride, and self worth to go back into hell. When so many marines are out their fighting and dying and you are not with them. My grandfather was army in peleliu 28 years old at the time he was spared combat because he was the only man in the company whom could type. He became a clerk with the rank of Corporal. He would tell my old man I stories about looking up at the hills at night watching the shells explode and the tracer round streak over the head and he would feel guilty of not being up there. He was not the only one. It was a different generation the Greatest generation. Sure they were scared of their minds, but the job came first. Every man knew that and they did their duty accordingly. God bless the Army. God bless the Corps. God Save this vile, cowardly, and depraved generation.
