Irish Freedom Song
The Boys of Crossbarry.
V1
As dawn broke early in the morning,
Tom Barry got his men into place,
For an ambush to bring Irish freedom,
12 hundred British soldiers they would face.
And when they came into Crossbarry,
And to sight of the gallant IRA,
With roars of rifles from the hillside,
From the fighting men of the 3rd West Cork brigade.
Chorus.
So remember the boys of Crossbarry,
They put the British forces on the run,
And were led by General Tom Barry,
On the 19th of March 21.
V2
Then more British troops had arrived there,
From every town thats nearby,
But that column of 1 hundred and 4 men,
Again they shot down from on high.
Flor Begley a gallant man from Bandon,
Played his pipes with all of his might,
To rally our brave volunteers,
To guarantee they,d carry the fight.
Chorus
V3
On that faithful day of the ambush,
Before the fight had began,
The British went to a house in Ballymurphy,
And shot down a true Irish man.
He staggered away from the safehouse,
As he tried to escape with his life,
Just 2 miles from Crossbarry,
Commandant Charlie Hurley did die.
Chorus.
V4
That day was a memorable victory,
In the historic year of 1921,
And we remember the brave volunteers,
Their deeds for Ireland were now done,
We remember Jeremiah O Leary,
Wont forget Corneilius Daly,
And likewise the brave Peter Monahan,
They died so Ireland could be free
Chorus (x2)
