Seriously. There was a video of ISIS murdering an 8 year old boy up for days before they did anything. There was this Indian channel called boyg@y or something like that which had kids as young as 8 being... well you get it. But hey, your idiot second cousin just posted a picture of a puppy tho!!! Storyline! So I was in jr. High (middleschool) when MySpace was just starting to hit its stride. Pretty much everyone and their brother had a page and the interconnected nature of it coupled with news articles like predators stalking the aim chat rooms put basically all the parents and teachers at odds with the website. Eventually students were being told "if it's found you have a MySpace, you'll be suspended from school until you delete it" and that went over as well as you could imagine. About a month after that there was a very public reaction from the teachers when it was found one of the students had a gun style background (think small ak with it copy pasted over and over. And mind you it was 03/04, the time of wannabe gangster style was part of the culture at the time.) And he was publicly shamed and expelled from school. Less than a week later and he's back in class but is holding a nda paper saying he isn't allowed to talk about what happened or what was said. His MySpace page background was changed to blue with a caption at the bottom left "god forbid I have anything in the background.

There was a lot from the Myspace days those of us who were inside the machine look back on and cringe, but there was no template at the time - we were learning as we went and tripped over ourselves repeatedly. You got the inside story MOSTLY right - the decline of Myspace occurred internally LONG before it crumbled publicly, and it was not Facebook alone that caused its death.

I was on MySpace in 2006 while serving in the Navy. I am glad I was over 21 when that site became popular. I realized very EARLY on my mood would change if a post or something I put up didn't get a response. I deleted my profile after a year...never got on any social media again until LinkedIn, and I only joined Reddit last year in 2019.

I used to use MySpace but the day I couldn’t login to my account, I went to FB. There were so many security problems that were never fixed and there were fake sites that were used to get users’ login information so they would get hacked easily.

In short: They were the first ones in the market, but also the first ones to suffer the issues of said market. Tumblr is the closest thing to MySpace. Blogs can be modified with code and even add a music player with html and css. If only the staff wasnt as incompetent we wouldnt be getting passed along corporations wanting to have the next Twitter under their belt.

I wasn't on Tumblr before The Purge to happen (which sucks because I really did want to join Tumblr), but I've have heard that Tumblr did have a whole lot of emo boys and emo band fans, so the comparisons between Tumblr and Myspace are pretty good.

There’s nothing I miss more than coding my MySpace page and it made me get closer to the people in my communities. I don’t use any social media anymore because it’s a bunch of ads and people photoshopping themselves to look like sims characters. Fun fact: back in the day, MySpace was crawling with undercover law enforcement agents who were looking to bust gangbangers and drug-dealers who were using the site to facilitate communications with their fellow gang members and clients. The amount of warrants that were filed by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies is insane. Basically, the site was one big honeypot.

We all laughed at the cheesy html customization back then yet now we're all desperate to have it back. Admit it, the "clean" look of websites now is just boring! The freedom forums and websites gave you back then to customize your profile (html, forum signatures, etc.) is all but non-existant on modern social medias! I hate this forcing everyone to look the same bullshit!

Aka the one ones who had a sense of fashion in the 2000s. Like seriously I was doing a fashion research project for my fashion class and I had the 2000s decade; so when I went to go to research on Google my goodness was almost every other fashion with super trashy, but when I looked at the emos something about the fashion sense just stuck out and it just felt like they had sense of fashion.

I used to LOVE Myspace. You could do ANYTHING you wanted with your profile. You could set up chat areas, all the forums on any topics that you liked. You could have a music list of the day that would have a new list of interesting music for people to sample. It was great. The problem was that a lot of people who got onto the platform didn't understand how to secure their page. Everyone started complaining about trolls and adds spamming their pages. If you knew what you were doing, those problems were pretty much non-existent. There were filters and programs that you could link to your page to contain all the problems. Your average person didn't know about, or bother doing this, leading to their pages just turning into a toxic mess. In all my time that I was on that platform, I never experienced a problem. When everyone jumped ship to Facebook, I was kind of forced to follow, because that's where all the people I needed to stay in contact with, went. I was so damn bored with Facebook and even to this day don't see the appeal. It's like a super stripped down to basics Myspace with zero customization, which was 99% of what I enjoyed. There's no way to use your creativity with social media sites now, unless you want to just post pictures or videos. There's nothing you can do creatively with your page itself. And that's a loss for us. It's so damn boring.
