The Palace of the Soviets - A brief History

Here I trace the story behind the 1930's plan to build a Palace of the Soviets in Moscow, to be constructed close to the Kremlin. If completed, the building would have become the world's tallest at that time. However the project never passed the foundation stage..... this is the story behind the scheme.

The best about it not being built is that it was meant to be a symbol of the success of communism, and ironically communism failed just like the project.

Had the Church not been rebuilt I would have loved to see this built, it’s a astounding piece of architecture. I wonder how the Russians after the fall of the USSR would have delt with it? Would they replace the Lenin with a Tsar or Putin or would they leave it there?

I thought so too, but I think the reason must be that the new building is the sole centre of attention, the first one was surrounded by a park and that took much of the visual frame from the church, that's why it looks more imponent now.

Interesting and mighty project - but the place was wrong. It meant barbaric demolition of not only Christ The Saviour Cathedral but of all the old buildings around. Communists destroyed much of the old Moscow with its ancient churches, monasteries and many other beautiful buildings. Thanks God this project was never realised.

It would have been a massive waste of concrete at the time. A significant portion of population was displaced by ww2 and it was simply more practical to focus on rebuilding. By the time USSR could focus on it again, the soviet leadership was no longer interested in megaprojects like this.

"highest point in the development of society...." but man is essentially corrupt and this ideal, as proved in many countries in history, has been its downfall........ alas we do not learn from history or past mistakes & I fear communism is Utopian and is used as a political platform for extremism.......

Stalin rebuilt the cathedrals. Trotsky had them torn down. I'm an Orthodox, Russian Christian.

The church is a historic monument that was taken down, the building of the palace couldn't be made because communism failed, and instead of letting that land be just a cool but meaningless pool, it was an amazing decision to rebuild the magnificent church that was there before.
