The narrator refers to Mikhail Gorbachev as President of the Soviet Union. This narrows the date of the making of this documentary to 1990-1991. At the end credits the date shown in roman numerals is MCMXCI. The Soviet Union fell in August 1991

I visited Moscow and St Petersburg years ago when Delta Airlines first started flying into Moscow. The tourist areas were fine but we took the train from Moscow to St Petersburg and poverty was extreme.

If you travelled right after the collapse of Soviet Union in the 90s then yes, it was a Great Depression because fool Gorbachev devalued ruble the Soviet currency by doing stupid perestroika and accepted the U.S. dollar as the instrument of exchange for goods. The problem was with the disintegration of the system and the collapse of the economy there was no production of the goods, it stalled. The only thing they could trade with it’s natural resources oil and gas ⛽️ . Gorbachev obviously wasn’t a smartest person in the room for doing that.

This was made before the fall as Gorbachev I saw talking here-and-there, and apparently still in-charge. Since ALL there has changed from State Atheism to Russian Orthodox Christianity. All the cathedrals are now back in-operation as intended and museums no-longer, with very many churches restored by the Government. This video digs deep into matters honestly, according to it's rather made-clear attitude. I enjoyed it and, learned too.

Unfortunately - it does not matter who votes, but who counts the votes - ( it was apparently NOT Stalin who said that) tht has not changed. Might that with the voting - machines -, might that be -ballot stuffing -.Might that be redrawing some borders or districts to get the - right numbers -. All that has to change. @PopDiv Ha ha. No, that movie is an example of someone faking intelligence. At least Amy Schumer is more honest about her stupidity. Good satire must serve its purpose by exposing human folly and attempting to inspire reform (Jonathan Swift). Bad comedy is when someone like Amy Schumer is only focused on having a mass masturbation session with her feminist friends, turning off anyone who isn't a woman. That movie was more Schumer than Swift. It's basically a masturbation movie where Westerners relive their Cold War victory by f**king the corpse of Soviet Union in its a**. Believe me. I am not a Russophile. I think Putin is the biggest fool of all time for trying to revive the Russian Empire which was exposed by Japan and Germany between 1904 and 1917 as a weak, primitive, incompetent and childish system of government. However, that movie only repeated propaganda, misunderstanding, and other nonsensical things about the Soviet Union, and did not reveal the real psychological inner workings of the Soviet society at that time. That's as much as one would expect from a graduate (Armando Iannucci) of BBC, which has sold its soul and been turned into factory to churn out sycophants and propagandists.

I have had a fascination with Russia and the old Soviet Union since I studied A level history at college. We were supposed to have a week long trip to Moscow, I would have loved to visit the Lenin mausoleum and other historical places. Sadly this was in 1991 around the time of the attempted coup and then dissolution of Communist rule, so the trip was put on hold and then I finished my studies and went off to University and have not had the opportunity to visit again, one day I hope to. We also had a brilliant teacher and she organised for us to have pen pals in Russia who we would write back and fourth to. I had two, one in Russia and one in Poland - we kept in contact for many years. My Russian pen pal used to ask me to send tapes of pop music which I did and he would send me things like CCCP badges and a badge with Lenin on. We found it funny how we were sending each other completely different things, I still have them today. He used to call me the 'English Komsomolet' and i used to call him a 'imperialist reactionary and a careerist cosmopolitan'. He used to ask if I didn't have anything better to do than wonder about who is on Russian stamps he also told me I'd be single forever if I don't find something better to do, Its not going to attract girls! 🤣🤣 This is because i told him I was fascinated by the stamps on the letters he sent me as they were often different with different things and people on them so I would ask them what they were (yes, what a geek). I used to jokingly apologise that all ours had the Queen on them so were boring as they were always the same. He sent me some Soviet postage stamps which featured British people on them, one was Kim Philby the spy who defected to the USSR and one featured Scottish Socialist John Mclean, it was pretty amazing to see British people on these stamps, because of their support of the Soviet Union - . I had to ask my teacher who they were first, no internet in those days! He also used to tell me Russian swear words and slang terms - kind of things teenagers do, which at the time i found hilarious. Then decades later i got a postcard out of the blue from my Polish pen pal, he sent it to my parents house - turns out he moved to the UK and has a wife and family not far from where I live. We met up and are now friends, he is a successful builder and actually built the extension on my house! How mad how life turns out, imagine predicting that would happen in 1990, funny how things turn out.

This was the Soviet Union before the storm. The Soviet Union collapsed after the storm. But the Tsar in the Kremlin has not changed. Whether it is the Russian Empire, the Soviet Empire, or the current Tsar Putin, the essence has never changed.

Gorbachev wasn't the idiot. Perestroika and Glasnost had to be done. The law on cooperatives had to be made as well. Leadership within the economic sphere purposely sabotaged the plans that Gorbachev and his reformist colleagues put into place. My country had nothing to do with what ended up happening. Kryuchkov and his KGB also stole over 50 billion dollars from the USSR and put it into an offshore account. I still think that nobody has any idea about what happened to that money. Yeltsin stole and his family got insanely rich. Mikhail had to spend the rest of his life making commercials and writing almost one book a year in order to both support his family as well as to keep his foundation afloat. Without Ted Turner's help he wouldn't even have been able to have a building to house his foundation. All of that is incredibly sad for a man who had done much good in the world. He was far from from perfect, and some of his decisions caused much tragedy, i.e. Chernobyl, Lithuania, and Nagorno-Karabakh, but history will look upon him very favoribly, especially with respect to the next two leaders of Russia.

This documentary seems old. Like maybe before the fall of the USSR? That might be why. It doesn’t mention, for example, that Nicolas II and his family have been canonized as martyrs. That happened in 2000 iirc. So no mention of the current conflict in Ukraine would be here.
