Maybe because it’s not really a highway, it’s just a bunch of connecting roads whether paved or not, maintained or not. Plus what’s the real point anyway if you have to transport your car through a ferry from Panama to Colombia?

There are a lot of theories as why to this hasn't been done including pressure against it by the US government and Panamanian government.

Cerro de la muerte in Costa Rica has no unpaved parts since decades ago... The name containing the word death is because people died during its construction because temperatures drop below 32° Fahrenheit in the zone

I live less than a half a miles from the highway. The highway of death has been called that since the 1920s or before.

@@hayasher I'm American and I've learned its "2" continents even though it is technically connected by a isthmus so it could be called one land mass just like Europe and Asia sometimes referred to as Eurasia, once was Afro-Eurasia before the Suez canal was dug. Now think about that before you go to sleep.

Iohan Georguiev , the bike wanderer , Canadian cyclist and explorer took 4 to 5 years to travel, explore America or the Americas, specially the national parks, coasts, high range mountains, plains, lakes , coasts from Proudhoe bay to Chile and Argentina Patagonia region , from 2014 until 2020 , he stopped and returned home when the COVID 19 pandemic begun all across world . also in 19 century a guy made this trip or journey from new York by horse , i do not know how many horses he used and what time he took for the trip, in 1940s and in 1969 many sponsored explorations were made by cars along this road or these roads, highways , anyway many drivers , specially tourists and truck drivers currently drove or drive from Canada and USA towards panama, panama city where the highway ends , others , Europeans mostly of them but also Americans and Asians send their motorbikes, bicycles, cars, trucks by ship from panama to Colombia, specially Caribbean sea ports in northern Colombia, cities like Cartagena de indias, Santa Marta or Barranquilla or sometimes to Buenaventura city port in pacific coast of south-western Colombia and from there they begin their journey in south America .....

It's a region of a continent or subcontinent, like Europe or India.

@@Dow_v97geographically Europe is at most a subcontinent of Asia. (Sometimes the whole continent is referred to as Eurasia) The only reason we count it as its own is because of culture. Russia is definitely Asia but is usually counted as Europe
