As a Diller of Long hole over 800 metres for core sampling I can only image the pressure & torque placed on the Drill String & going so deep as the Chinese they will have to be top notch Drillers to stop the hole bending which would put extra strain on the Drill string through Friction of the string rubbing on the Hole wall

When I read about some deep bore project somewhere, I find myself wondering about what dormant ancient lifeforms it might unearth. Actually.. China is looking into mass producing Small Nuclear Reactors (SMRs). One of the main hurdles of this is how Nuclear waste is disposed of. Theoretically dumping Nuclear waste deep into the Earth is if not, the most viable option.

It used to be that in drilling one had to use a bit of sufficient diameter to accept the well casing. This required the bit to be larger in diameter than the casing. In order to change the bit one had to "trip" the well, which means that you had to pull out all the casing pipe, put on a new bit and put it all back. I assume that we have technology now that allows a bit to be narrow enough to go down the well casing and then expand to the proper size. If anyone actually knows how this is done these days I would be interested in finding out.

russia already did it and decided not to go any further. Scientists found microscopic fossils of single-celled organisms at 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) down. And at nearly the same depth, they discovered water. They also found that the temperature at the bottom of the hole reached a blistering 356°F (180°C). Being too hot to continue, drilling officially halted in 1994.

Wondering how the drill team keeps the drill going straight down and not going sideways? I have seen diagrams that oil exploration will go lateral at a depth on purpose, this explains length vs. depth. How do they steer a spinning drill bit? If you could make a mention if you update this in the future. Thx
@zerolatitude29234 ай бұрын
Behind the bit (up the hole) there is a wrist like joint. We can move that joint to steer the bit. Data can come up through the mud or in a wired BHA (Bottom hole assembly) The directional boys are really good at what they do. Was a tool pusher on a rig in Dubai.

It's solid/molten rock down there.. There are no caves down there. They physically can't exist due to the pressures down there. If things could live in magma/molten rock, then we would've encountered them already since people live in Hawaii just fine. It's not like they can even get up to the top to begin with. At a certain point, the immense pressure just closes up the tiny gap that humans made. That's why it's difficult to dig that deep, you can't just simply break some rocks and forget about it.

I’ve had drill bits break, even when drilling 6”! Then, you’re screwed…How do you get that bit OUT?!? Usually it requires starting again…
@jeffwarren9106Ай бұрын
If you twist off a bit or any of your drill string,,, you pull the remaining drill pipe that’s above it and depending on what is broken off in the hole, then you put on a tool that will set down over the broken piece then lock it in place and slowly start pulling back out of the hole and hope you retrieved the fish. That’s the terminology used for whatever you broke off in the hole. It’s called a “fish”. And in and out with the drill pipe to retrieve your fish is actually called “fishing “ in oilfield terminology. No one in the oilfield wants to have to fish anything out of the hole. From the floor hand to the company man. On a drilling rig if you aren’t turning to the right then you’re not making money. You want the drill bit in the hole and on bottom turning to the right at all times. Time is money! ✌️
